The comparative properties of plaster of Paris and plaster of Paris substitutes.

Modern casting materials are becoming available in an increasing and bewildering variety. A series of tests has been devised to investigate the properties of these materials. They have been tested for strength, flexibility, lamination, fatigue life and radiolucency. Their properties have been compared with those of plaster of Paris in order that the role of the newer materials can be defined. It is suggested that the tests described might form the basis of a standard from which user trials could be designed to appraise the value of these materials in clinical practice.

Allergic contact dermatitis due to benzalkonium chloride in plaster of Paris.

Plaster of Paris (POP) bandages are extensively used for splinting and casting injured or surgically repaired body parts. Allergic contact dermatitis caused by POP has been reported only rarely in the medical literature. An 81-year-old woman developed multiple large, tense, haemorrhagic bullae on the palm, and an acute vesicular eczematous eruption on the forearm, after the application of a POP splint. Subsequent patch testing revealed positive reactions to both the POP bandage used and to benzalkonium chloride, a component of the POP formulation. Patch tests to two other POP products without benzalkonium chloride were negative. These results confirm those of previous studies which have implicated the quaternary ammonium compound benzalkonium chloride as the allergen responsible for POP-induced allergic contact dermatitis.

A new thermoplastic casting material. A comparison between plaster of Paris and Hexelite.

Plaster of Paris and Hexelite, a new thermoplastic bandage, were compared in the treatment of 183 patients with malleolar fractures, Colles' fractures or distortions of the finger joints. There were no statistically significant differences between the two types of bandages taking into account the strength of the bandage, the amount of skin damage and the patient's opinion of the bandage. Hexelite is seven times more expensive than plaster of Paris, and, in addition, is more difficult to handle. Hence its use has been discontinued.

[Plaster of Paris pellets containing antibiotics in the treatment of bone infection. New combinations of plaster with antibiotics].

The author has tested the action of antibiotic-loaded plaster of Paris loaded pellets in 15 patients with success in 13. Previous studies using plaster of Paris for filling bone defects are noted, plaster being well tolerated and absorbable. Gentamycin, Fucidin and Cefazolin were tested first. In a second series, Netilmicin, Amikacin, Rifamycin and Rifampicin were also used. The preparation of the pellets is fully described. In most instances they can be sterilized by gamma rays except for Fucidin and Cefazolin. Several hundred pellets can be used simultaneously. A study of the elimination of antibiotic in the urine was made. It was concluded that the concentrations obtained by this method in the tissues were highly satisfactory.
