A comparison of physical efficiency between Indian physical education and medical students.

The recovery pulse and respiration were analysed to determine the level of physical fitness among the physical education and medical students of Banaras Hindu University. The analysis of the data suggested that physical fitness as measured by recovery rate was better in physical education students than in medical students. Following questionnaire method, it has been noted that the daily activity of physical education students was more than the medical students and probably the reason for higher efficiency in them.

[First results of sportmedical examinations in children norm-values and influence of overweight on physical efficiency (author's transl)].

The individual physical efficiency was ascertained according to a method developed by RUTENFRANZ, where the criterion was taken as being the particular performance which resulted in a pulse rate of 170 beats per minute. This was termed the p.w.c. 170 (physical working capacity), and was measured on a bicycle ergometer, with increasing loading of 1, 2, and 3 watt per kilogram of body weight. During this loading the E.C.G. was watched telemetrically on an oscilloscope, and recorded each minute. The p.w.c. 170 was ascertained both graphically and arithmetically from the respective pulse rate in the 6th minute of each load level. Initially, twenty healthy children were tested, so as to arrive at normal values. The average reading for these children was about 5% below the normal values given by RUTENFRANZ. Subsequently, fifty five obese children were examined, so as to clarify the question as to whether there was a linear correlation between overweight and physical efficiency. Indeed, it was possible to establish a regression equation according to which each 10% of overweight lead to a decrease of physical efficiency of 5.8%. The results of further examinations will be reported in the next paper.

Effects of a physical training program on physical efficiency, work capacity and classroom-attention of handicapped children.

In the present study the effects of a ten-week physical training program on physical efficiency, work capacity and classroom-attention of 11 motorically handicapped children (between 8 and 14 years old) were examined. A physical training program for the children in the experimental group (n = 6) consisted of an intensification of the activities (assessed by means of heart rate recordings) of the scheduled physical education lessons, while the control group (n = 5) followed the same lessons without the intensity of the activities being changed. During all the lessons, the experimental group was required to achieve a minimum heart rate value of 160 beats X min-1. Physical efficiency and physical work capacity scores were calculated from the obtained relationships of respectively oxygen uptake versus workload and of oxygen uptake versus heart rate, determined during a submaximal bicycle ergometer test. Attention in the classroom was measured by means of a previously developed observation instrument. At the end of the ten-week training program a significant increase in physical efficiency and classroom-attention scores was demonstrated for the children in the experimental group. Such effects could not be demonstrated for the children in the control group. The implication that can be drawn from this finding is that the motorically handicapped children in the experimental group after having received special physical training can perform the same amount of external work with less energy expenditure. Further, their attention behaviour in the classroom situation appears to be facilitated. A follow-up study, carried out some months after the end of the training program, showed for both groups a deterioration in physical efficiency scores, while the experimental group also deteriotated in terms of their attention scores. It is suggested that an intensification of activities during the scheduled physical education lesson can have positive effects both physical and psychological on motorically handicapped children.

[Physical efficiency of women employed in the knitting industry].

Physical efficiency in 184 spinners of a modern knitting plant has been examined by determining a maximum absorbtion of oxygen (VO2 max) using an indirect method of Astrand--Ryhming. A significant effect of age and consequently duration of employment on the decrease in physical efficiency level has been found. The distribution of efficiency index according to Astrand's classifications is not equal, which may result from a particular stereotype of motorial activity, especially non-occupational one.

Physical efficiency of 10-16-year-old boys with hearing impairment.

PURPOSE: The aim of our investigation was to estimate on hand of the above the physical efficiency value of hearing impaired children and compare them with healthy counterparts. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The investigation covered a group of 63 boys, 27 with hearing impairment (HI) and 36 healthy (R), 10-16 years old. The investigated subjects were divided into 2 groups according to their age: 10-12 and 14-16-year-old boys. For determination of cardio-respiratory system efficiency PWC170 (Physical Working Capacity) test was performed. PWC170 and VO2max indices were calculated using proper mathematical equations. RESULTS: The comparison of PWC170 and VO2max indices shows no statistically significant differences between investigated groups. Boys from younger HI group obtained higher PWC170 and VO2max values than boys from R group. In older groups, values of investigated indices were inversed in relation to younger groups. Boys from R group obtained higher values of investigated indices. CONCLUSIONS: Results received shows some trend, which is probably connected with isolation and absence of cohesion between auditory organ rehabilitation and physical efficiency development. There is necessity of integration programs construction, which will influence on comprehensive and proper growth of hearing impaired children.

Some physical efficiency tests on Bengalese football goalkeepers.

Simple anthropometric measurements and physical efficiency tests were conducted on 21 Football Goalkeepers from West Bengal, India. The age of the subjects varied between 18--24 years (av. 21.1). The Vital Capacity (total ml/cm of height, L/m2 of surface area) and the Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (total, L/cm of height, L/kg of body weight, L/m2 of surface area, L/age) were noted to be higher in the subjects of the present study than those reported for average healthy Indian population, but lower than values from top Indian athletes. The values of grip strength observed in this study could not be compared because of unavailability of Indian norms. The higher values of physical efficiency tests observed in these subjects in comparison to those of average Indian populations were probably due to training effects.

[The evaluation of the state of saturation of the organism with antioxidant vitamins C and E and their influence on the physical efficiency of young sportsmen].

The presented research project involved investigations aiming at assessing, on the basis of the consumption anamnesis from the last 24 hours, the method of nutrition concerning the supply with vitamin C and E, the state of saturation of the organisms with these vitamins by determining their concentrations in the blood serum employing the high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method and, on the basis of the step test (according to Mazur and co-workers), the physical efficiency of young persons practicing various sports of the endurance--high-speed nature such as swimming, canoeing and rowing. Investigations were carried out in two 30-person groups of which one ate food supplemented with C and E vitamins, whereas the other one obtained plain, unsupplemented food. In the course of the performed experiments, it was found that young sportsmen were nourished properly and adequately to the sports disciplines they practiced. It also referred to the supply in vitamins C and E. The state of the saturation of their organisms with these vitamins was optimal as evidenced by their concentrations in the blood serum and their physical efficiency was quite satisfactory. The performed statistical analysis showed a significant correlation between the nutrition of sportsmen supplemented with vitamin C in the form of kiwi fruits and vitamin E in capsules and their physical efficiency.

Physical efficiency tests in Indian urban adolescent boys and girls.

Simple anthropometric measurements and physical efficiency tests were performed on adolescent Indian urban boys between 10-14 years and girls between 11-14 years of age. The similar height and weight of the subjects of both sexes were observed and was suggestive of higher growth rate in girls than the boys during only the initial phase of adolescent growth spurt. The vital capacity (total, ml/cm of height, l/m2 of surface area), Peak Expiratory Flow Rate (total, l/cm of height, l/kg of weight, l/m2 of surface area, l/year of age) and grip strength were observed to be insignificantly different between the sexes.

Quantitative analysis of gated SPECT images using an efficient physical deformation model.

In this paper, we present quantitative analysis of cardiac images using an efficient physical deformation model to evaluate ventricular function. By using this model we can accurately and efficiently compute ventricular volume, myocardial mass, endo- and epi-cardial wall motions and wall thickness over a full cardiac cycle. Patients with cardiac diseases were studied in our modeling and measurement framework using gated single-photon emission computed tomographic images. The results show that quantitative analysis using the model is very useful for the assessment of the extent and severity of myocardial ischemia or infarction. And it could be helpful to improve the decision-making process in the treatment of patients with cardiac diseases.

Changes of glucose utilization by erythrocytes, lactic acid concentration in the serum and blood cells, and haematocrit value during one hour rest after maximal effort in individuals differing in physical efficiency.

Glucose utilization by the erythrocytes, lactic acid concentration in the blood and erythrocytes, and haematocrit value were determined before exercise and during one hour rest following maximal exercise in 97 individuals of either sex differing in physical efficiency. In the investigations reported by the author individuals with strikingly high physical fitness performed maximal work one-third greater than that performed by individuals with medium fitness. The serum concentration of lactic acid was in all individuals above the resting value still after 60 minutes of rest. On the other hand, this concentration returned to the normal level in the erythrocytes but only in individuals with strikingly high efficiency. Glucose utilization by the erythrocytes during the restitution period was highest immediately after the exercise in all studied individuals and showed a tendency for more rapid return to resting values again in individuals with highest efficiency. The investigation of very efficient individuals repeated twice demonstrated greater utilization of glucose by the erythrocytes at the time of greater maximal exercise. This was associated with greater lactic acid concentration in the serum and erythrocytes throughout the whole one-hour rest period. The observed facts suggest an active participation of erythrocytes in the process of adaptation of the organism to exercise.

Physical efficiency of Bengali farmers in response to change in environmental factors.

The present study was conducted on young farmers, selected randomly from a village of West Bengal. Their pre-exercise heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and other physical parameters were recorded. They were asked to perform standard step test at four different times of a day when environmental factors were recorded. Recorded environmental factors were maximum ambient temperature (Tmax), and minimum ambient temperature (Tmin) for the whole day, ambient temperature (Ta), relative humidity (RH), air velocity (AV), and globe temperature (Tg). The barometric pressure (P) was noted to be constant throughout the experiment. Post-exercise HR and MAP were also recorded. Our observations showed that environmental factors changed as the day progressed from the morning to noon and from noon to night; the physiological parameters of the farmers also changed. HR was lowest in the morning and night but highest in the evening while MAP was highest at midday and gradually returned to the pre-exercise level by the evening. The determined Physical Fitness Index (PFI) of the farmers was noted to be lowest at midday but highest at night. Our studies indicate that environmental factors have a role on the physical efficiency of farmers. Ta, RH and Tg appear to be primarily responsible for the alterations in the physiological functions and PFI.
