This study investigates the value of remote broadcasting equipment in instruction in pedodontics. Twenty students, between their junior and senior years, were randomly chosen and videotaped during an operative dentistry appointment with a child. Ten students reviewed and critiqued their own tapes immediately after the clinic session. Ten students received instruction using remote broadcasting equipment in an attempt to provide cues and immediate feedback. Results indicate the usefulness of remote broadcasting equipment as a new pedagogic technique in pedodontics.
In order to get success in pedodontic activity fundamental qualifications are knowledge of young patient and comprehension of his eventual problems. In fact personal character, age and then mature level and ambient influences due to education affect children's manners. The A.A., on the basis of personal experiences, value salient characteristics of pedodontic patient's manners and they point out different aspects of children under observation.
Three psychological phenomena are detected during dental attention. Their characteristics are studied and a strategy is performed to adapt three pedodontic patients to dental attention. The three patients presented great resistance to pedodontics dental attention. The method to overcome the resistance to dental attention due to anguish is to establish a good relation-ship between the dentist and the patient, a good management of the ambivalent feeling of the child and the elimination of the phenomenon of transference.
The University of Florida uses a comprehensive care program to teach clinical pedodontics. Several special block clinics permit students further experience with children. Details of the comprehensive care program are described, with basic elements for a successful program emphasized. Quantitative results of patient treatment are presented and compared to those of other clinical pedodontic programs.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the type and prevalence of dental injuries referred to Ankara University, School of Dentistry, Department of Pedodontics, Turkey. One hundred and forty-seven patients with 234 traumatized teeth presented during 18-month interval. Of the 147 patients, 85 were boys and 62 were girls. The most frequent trauma occurred in the age of 11 years. The maxillary central incisors were found to be the most affected tooth in both primary and permanent dentition injuries. The maxillary arch is involved in a higher percentage of trauma cases (95.72%). The most common cause of injuries are falls (67.34%). In the primary dentition, the most common type of injury is extrusive luxation (38.23%) and in the permanent dentition, it is fracture of enamel-dentin without pulpal involvement (50.5%). From 147 patients, only 82 presented to our clinic within 1 h and 10 days after the injury time. It reveals that there is a need to inform the public of what they should do in cases of dental trauma, and how important it is to contact a dentist immediately.
Dentinogenesis imperfecta type II, also known as hereditary opalescent dentin, is an isolated inherited condition transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait affecting the primary and permanent dentition. The combined pedodontic-orthodontic management of a 4-year-old child is described. Following orthodontic analysis to encourage a favourable growth outcome, treatment comprised restoration of the primary teeth with stainless steel crowns and composite crowns. Differential diagnosis and alternative therapies, including orthodontic considerations, are discussed.
Autonomic and behavioral responses to seven dental procedures were studied in 21 pedodontic patients aged six to 12. When mean pulse rate, pulse amplitude, absolute skin conductance, and skin-conductance responses were compared over all subjects, the injection of the local anesthetic consistently elicited the greatest response. In five patients where anesthesia was inadequate, painful high-speed drilling also elicited large responses. When autonomic responses were compared between high-anxious and low-anxious children, both groups showed similar transient responsiveness. High-anxious children showed a significantly higher basal level of sympathetic activity.
The traumatic dental injuries in children represent the second, after dental caries, most common reason of attending the dental surgeries. The paper presents the statistical analysis of the patients attending the Department of Pedodontics, Medical Academy in Lublin due to the traumatic dental injuries.
Tooth transposition is a rare but severe disturbance of tooth eruption. The maxillary canine and the premolar are the most commonly transposed teeth. The occurrence of transposition in the mandible is very rare. The transposition may occur in combination with other anomalies, like aplasia (40%), peg-shaped lateral incisor (25%), deciduous tooth retention (50%). The adjacent teeth exchange positions in the dental arch for genetic or traumatic reasons. In the last five years orthopantomograms of 2736 patients were analysed at the Department of Pedodontics and Orthodontics of Semmelweis University. Twelve transposition cases (0.43%) were found: 10 in the upper and 2 in the lower dental arch. Only one case was bilateral transposition. Nine patients were treated with fixed appliance. In one of these cases the transposed tooth was extracted and two patients are being observed. The methods of treatment are in accordance with the international guide-lines.
The aim of the present study was to clinically evaluate Ultra Seal XT third generation light cured fissure sealant on the occlusal pits and fissures of permanent first and second molars for a period of two years. The examined population consisted of 112 Hungarian school-children, aged 8 to 14 years who presented for treatment at the Department of Dentistry for Children and Orthodontics in Budapest. The 1120 participants had a total of 247 permanent molars sealed. All teeth were monitorized and controlled after 6 months, 1 year and 2 years. Retentivity of fissure sealants were after 6 months 92.7%, one year 87.8%, two years 79.9%. These results are in accordance with data of literature. This longitudinal study showed that modern pit and fissure sealants can be applied during childhood in systematic pedodontic care. It has high retentivity and a directly proportional optimal caries-preventive effect.
Since 1969, pedodontia has become an official part of dental education in this country. In the study and examination plan, the requirements are accurately defined. The build up and scope of the pedodontic plan of instruction at the dental school of the University of Zurich during the last 3 years is described.
