The changing 'shape' of the nursing station.

The Nursing Station is a puzzling structure fulfilling a variety of roles throughout the day. At times, it resembles a communal market place with staff standing around chatting. Yet, once a shift commences, regulatory characteristics emerge to control a person's entry and exit from the ward, by ensuring that they have an authentic reason for being there. This paper juxtaposes the role of the Nursing Station with Strauss et al.'s (1964) notion of shape. In this way, is intended to examine in detail how the Nursing Station can influence the normal and natural flow of work within a ward.

Distractions at nurses' stations during intershift report.

Observations of distractions during intershift report at nurses' stations on ten medical-surgical units in an acute-care general hospital are summarized. Almost five times more auditory and visual distractions occurred at nurses' stations at which report took place at an open charting desk than at nurses' stations with a separate reporting area.

[Examination of an after-hour emergency telephone consultation by Kizuna visiting nurse station].

From inception, Kizuna visiting nurse station has been giving a 24-hour service because it is highly regarded as being most dependable in providing medical care service to a patient and family members since we started doing this service. Since an introduction of home care insurance system started, we provided telephone consultation as well as dispatching emergency visiting nursing service under an agreement with a fee that was named as "added emergency visiting nursing service fee". We examined and analyzed the emergency visiting nursing service contents based on the after hour telephone consultation given to patients and family members.

[The record book of a general nursing station--a reflection of daily interventions?].

There were analyzed report books of three nursing stations to win starting points for a milieu therapeutical reform. The methodical inventory included the analysis of the contents as well as rules of functional-communicating linguistic description. The qualitative analysis showed that most texts should be classified as texts of the class 'inform'. The members of the staff fall back upon the emotional report in problematical daily situations. The quantitative analysis of the dates showed the tendency for describing live at the nursing stations in the report books with routine notes. In cases the text included a statement there was dominating the medical-careful contents. Social stiking behavior of the inhabitants is more documented as an observation of there global rights and duties or individual and/or social useful activities. An improvement of this situation is possible if the state of affairs is not only told but based too and if the consequences are fixed. The script-approach by SCHANK and ABELSON should be tested for it's usefulness to improve the reports. Isolate requirements must be embed in a general conscions processing of social informations.

[Role of the home health care/visiting nurse in industry: possibilities for visiting nurse station and industry cooperation].

As societal awareness of home health care increases, patient demands for home health care are becoming more diversified. In the future, the construction of a system able to address this diversification will be essential for further establishing the role of home health care in society. A demand exists for hospital primary care physicians, medical practitioners, visiting nurse stations, helper services, and firms to provide their services in flexible combination with those of organizations and occupations having various functions, in forms that suit the needs of the relevant patient group. Particularly in the case of visiting nursing, the cultivation of internal flexibility and cooperative relationships with outside organizations able to serve a variety of needs may prove to be the essential lesson remaining after the discontinuation of care insurance, two years after its introduction. Through cases involving physicians, visiting nurse stations, and firms we consider favorable ways for organizations to cooperate.

[Evaluation of the quality of care at a nursing station in a health center].

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the procedures in the care of patients who attend the nursing station (NS), identify possible faults and evaluate the effect of these procedures on the patients. DESIGN: Descriptive and retrospective study concerning the quality of the NS. SITE. Primary Care. At the Molino de la Vega Health Centre, Huelva. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: The 602 people who attended the NS: patients with Hypertension, Diabetic, Obesity and osteoarticular problems. MAIN MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: 54.4% of the procedures show a high level of control: in the case of Hypertension, the percentage reaches 62.7% (C.I. 95%: 57.8-68%). 87.3% of diabetics treated with insulin managed to give themselves their injections. 45.4% of patients suffered more than one chronic illness. The analytical tests envisaged were carried out on 62% of those with light Hypertension and on 41.4% of those with severe Hypertension. 71.3% of patients with light Hypertension had a high rate of attendance at the station, which was correct in 93.8% of the severe cases. All categories of patients with diabetes attended with excessive frequency. CONCLUSIONS: The high level of control attained clearly shows the NS's usefulness. The high percentage of self-injection achieved means that the majority of our diabetics who are treated with insulin are responsible for their own health. A fair number of patients present varied pathologies. Over-use of the NS by the large proportion of those patients with light Hypertension and diabetes implies inadequate care for other groups of patients, for example those suffering severe Hypertension.

Nursing station order entry for hospital computers.

Tired of illegible labels, unlabeled specimens, and frantic phone calls asking what happened to specimens? This lab was and devised a system to allow test ordering and label printing from nurse stations.
