Neon flank and illusory contour: interaction between the two processes leads to color filling-in.

Two aspects of neon color spreading, local color spreading (neon flank) and illusory contour, were investigated by dichoptic viewing. Neon flank was not observed under appropriate dichoptic stimulation, suggesting that input to the process for local color spreading is based on monocular configuration. However, illusory contours were formed according to the interocularly combined configuration rather than according to each monocular configuration, suggesting that input to the process responsible for illusory contours should be ocularly-nonselective and binocular, rather than monocular. The possibilities of artifacts such as those arising from interocular rivalry were appropriately eliminated, and thus, it is tentatively concluded that the process underlying local color spreading is monocularly driven, whereas the process underlying illusory contours is binocularly driven. Furthermore, a new demonstration is presented that indicates that interocularly-induced illusory contours 'capture' and extend the monocularly-induced local color spreading, resulting in global color spreading (neon color spreading). These results support our hypotheses that neon color spreading involves two separable processes in the early visual processing, the feature detection process (for local color spreading) and the illusory contour process, and that these two processes interact with each other at later stages of cortical processing. The relation of local color spreading and illusory contours to surface separation is also discussed.

[Rationale for using helium-neon laser in medical rehabilitation of patients with atrophy].

High resolution measurements of helium-neon laser spectra have been conducted about 0.64 mm wavelength. The singlet oxygen photo-generation was demonstrated to be responsible for the bioeffects of this spectral interval. Helium-neon radiation with 0.633 mm wavelength was used for medical rehabilitation of 15 patients with muscular atrophy as a result of wearing immobilizing plaster arm-bends on lower extremity fractures. 50-day hypokinesia of a damaged extremity induced differences in functional indices between damaged and healthy extremities in the same patient. This difference was diminishing more rapidly after laser therapy than in the control group though all patients had adequate rehabilitative treatment. Due to the likelihood of hypokinesia- and weightlessness-induced atrophies, helium-neon laser may be recommended for atrophy prophylaxis and treatment in both cases.

Endoscopic enhancement of the healing of high-risk colon anastomoses by low-power helium-neon laser. An experimental study.

Recent studies suggest that helium-neon (He-Ne) lasers at low energy can enhance wound healing in intestinal anastomoses. In this experimental study, we tested the strength and collagen concentration of high-risk anastomoses of the rat colon after endoscopic irradiation by helium-neon laser. Our results show that repeated helium-neon laser irradiation (1.9 J/cm2) increases the bursting strength of the anastomoses by almost 100% on the fourth postoperative day. This effect is not observed by increasing the radiation dose (6.4 J/cm2). Differences in collagen (hydroxyproline) concentration did not reach statistical significance.

Anastomosis, Surgical

Illusory depth from moving subjective figures and neon colour spreading.

If a pattern of concentric circles, interrupted so as to produce the perception of a subjective bar extending from the centre to the periphery of the pattern, was slowly rotated in a plane perpendicular to the line of sight, observers reported seeing the bar slanted in depth and moving over complete and stationary concentric circles. When the interrupted concentric circles were completed by red segments--thereby giving rise to a neon colour-spreading effect--observers reported seeing a reddish bar, which sometimes appeared to be slanted in depth, moving behind the plane of the concentric circles. A combination of the two patterns was found to originate a compelling percept of a unitary bar slanted in depth: part of the bar (the subjective half) appeared to be located in front of its inducing elements, whereas the other part (the neon-like half) appeared to continue behind them. When translatory instead of rotary motion was used, the bars did not look slanted in depth: however, the neon bar appeared either behind or in front of the inducing lines, depending on the luminance contrast between the segments and the inducing lines themselves.

[The action of helium-neon laser radiation on the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis].

The growth properties of M. tuberculosis subjected to the action of helium-neon laser radiation was studied. Laser radiation was shown to change the quantitative and qualitative composition of mycobacterial population. Disturbances in the viability of mycobacteria appear as a consequence of changes in the morphological structure of mycobacterial cells. The maximum effect of helium-neon laser radiation was achieved after the irradiation of M. tuberculosis culture on days 2-3 after inoculation. These results made it possible to suggest that the effect of helium-neon laser radiation was most pronounced in cells at the stage of mitosis (the logarithmic stage of growth) with the highest degree of metabolism.

The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) and oxygen enhancement ratio (OER) of neon ions for the EMT6 tumor system.

EMT6 tumors were exposed to neon ions in vivo and in vitro in the plateau and spread-out Bragg peak regions of the beam. The RBE in vivo was 1.7-2.1 in the plateau region and 2.6-2.9 in the Bragg peak; the OER was 2.0 and 1.4, respectively. Neon ions have great potential in the radiotherapy of tumors because of their decreased OER and excellent depth-dose distribution in tissue.

[Helium-neon laser in the complex treatment of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis].

The paper gives the results of helium-neon laser irradiation of the endobronchus used in the combined treatment of 30 patients with newly-diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis complicated by nonspecific endobronchitis. Inclusion of endobronchial phototherapy and helium-neon laser radiation in the complex treatment of patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis complicated by nonspecific endobronchitis makes it possible to achieve clinical cure of an inflammatory bronchial process by 35% more frequently and over 2-3 times more rapidly than in its absence and to increase treatment efficiency of the main process; the terms of bacillary excretion decrease by 1 month, on the average, closure of destruction cavities (with an increase in the parameter by 17%) by 1.2 months and hospital treatment by 1.2 months, as compared with the respective parameters obtained by the traditional treatment of the similar patients.

Effect of helium-neon laser irradiation on serum lipid peroxide concentrations in burnt mice.

The effect of helium-neon irradiation on serum lipid peroxide concentrations in mice following 6-7% body surface area burns was investigated in a controlled study. Immediately following injury by an 8-sec 100 degrees C scalding, 25 mice were irradiated by a helium-neon laser at 0.05 J/cm2. A control group of the same size underwent identical treatment but received only sham irradiation. Serum lipid peroxide concentrations increased markedly in the control group at 0.5-4 h (P less than 0.0001, two sample t-test). In the laser treated group, the lipid peroxide concentrations remained relatively constant and were significantly depressed relative to the control group 4 h following burning (P less than 0.0001, two-sample t-test).

[Comparative histological and light-microscopic cytomorphometric studies of the tissue repair processes in postoperative wound complications treated locally with helium-neon laser radiation or a proteolytic enzyme].

Morphological studies were carried out on tissue material, removed from wound peripheral parts during application of secondary sutures on 69 complete perineal wound dehiscences of parturients prepared by helium-neon laser irradiation according to a method described by us, as of wound peripheral parts of 15 perineal wound dehiscences, prepared by alphahymotripsin dissolved in a solution with vitamin C. Histological preparations were stained by hematoxilin-eosin by van Gieson (for collagenous fibres), by Weigert (for elastic fibres) and by Gomori (for reticular fibres). Light microscopic cytomorphometric studies were made by a graduated ocular micrometer on stained with hematoxilin-eosin tissue sections with the help of standard optical system. The results of the performed histological examinations give foundation to accept the occurred more active stimulation of inflammatory and proliferative phase of wound reparative process after laser therapy with helium-neon laser irradiation. Light microscopic cytomorphometric studies indicate the presence of more advanced in its development granulation tissue after laser therapy by means of activation of local immunocompetent cells.

[Enzyme status of blood cells in premature children during the treatment of omphalitis by helium-neon laser radiation].

Helium-neon laser radiation was employed in the treatment of 27 premature children suffering from omphalitis. It has been established that helium-neon laser radiation produces a favourable effect on the healing and epithelization of the umbilical wound, activates lymphocyte succinate dehydrogenase in premature children. The rate of wound healing correlates with the initial enzymic status, with the number of sessions of laser therapy and the general estimation of the previous development of the child in accordance with the prognostic coefficient of sepsis development.

The effects of the helium-neon laser on postsurgical discomfort: a pilot study.

It has been postulated that low-energy lasers (soft lasers) have analgesic capabilities. European investigators who have worked with these lasers have tried to explain this phenomenon as an interference with the mediation of the pain message and/or the stimulation of endorphin production. There does not appear, however, to be much well-controlled research to support these claims. This study has examined the effect of the helium-neon laser on post-surgical discomfort. Fifteen patients who had surgical removal of bilaterally symmetrical mandibular third molars were evaluated. Laser therapy was applied to one side of each patient's mouth with the other side serving as the control. A similar technique of application, without activation of the laser beam, was utilized on the control side. This study has demonstrated that the helium-neon laser (632.8 nanometre (nm) at 10 milliwatt (mW), when applied to the surgical site for three minutes immediately following third molar surgery, reduced postoperative pain on the day of surgery and on the first postoperative day. This finding was statistically significant.

Cytokine production after helium-neon laser irradiation in cultures of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

The effects of laser light on the immune system have not been extensively characterized. Low-power laser sources, such as the helium-neon (He-Ne) laser with a wavelength of 632.8 nm, have been found to produce photobiological effects with evidence of interference with immunological functions. We have investigated the effects of He-Ne laser irradiation on Ficoll-Hypaque-isolated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Cultured cells were irradiated for various times at two selected intensities and then stimulated with different mitogens. The rate of incorporation of 3H-thymidine into the DNA of stimulated cells decreased with increasing energy density. The levels of interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha), interleukin-2 (IL-2), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in supernatants of the cultures were determined (irradiated either before or after stimulation). When stimulating cells after irradiation, significantly increased levels of all cytokines were detected after 30 min of irradiation (18.9 J cm-2), whereas after 60 min of irradiation (37.8 J cm-2) cytokine levels were found to be significantly decreased.

Comparison of infrared and helium-neon lasers in the measurement of blood flow in human skin by the laser-Doppler technique.

Histamine-induced changes in blood flow in normal human skin were assessed by laser-Doppler velocimetry using 2 lasers of different wavelengths: 780 nm infrared and 633 nm helium-neon. The visible flare response in skin was also measured by planimetry. Laser-Doppler velocimetry was shown to detect both the magnitude of the change in blood flow caused by histamine and also the extent of the changes in the skin. Both parameters were related to the dose of histamine, which ranged between 25 and 750 pmol/site. There was good correlation between the magnitude of the histamine-induced blood flow change and the extent of the response. The flare induced by histamine and measured by planimetry was similar in extent to the blood flow change recorded by laser-Doppler velocimetry. No difference in either the magnitude or the extent of blood flow changes in response to histamine, as measured by laser-Doppler velocimetry, were found when lasers of different wavelengths were used.

[Functional state of various physiological systems of the human body during respiration of neon-oxygen mixture at depth up to 400 meters].

Hyperbaric neon-oxygen mixture has been studied for the effect of its high density under pressure of 41 ata on basic physiological functions of human organism. Typical changes of the cardiorespiratory system and tissue respiration parameters are revealed. Changes in physical working capacity are shown. Exposure to gaseous medium of high pressure and density is accompanied by the development of some compensatory-adaptive reactions. The possibility to perform mid-hard physical work is attained with overstrain of respiration and circulation function.

[Results of helium-neon laser radiation action on the hematopoietic system experimentally and in the laser therapy of surgical diseases].

The investigation of effects of the red light of the helium-neon laser on hemopoiesis of experimental animals has provided data on the activation of erythropoiesis and the presence of the leucocyte redistribution reaction in the peripheral blood. No pathological changes in the morphological composition of the peripheral blood were detected in patients with a deforming arthrosis and patients with gastric ulcer in the process of laser therapy. Favourable changes were noted.

Sensory conditions for the occurrence of the neon spreading illusion.

The neon effect, i.e. an illusion of light projected onto a homogeneous lattice, may occur in line patterns made up of elements of different color or brightness. Particular luminance relations between the different line elements in the patterns and between these line elements and their background appear to be critical for the occurrence of the effect.

[Use of helium-neon laser device LTM-01 in the treatment of patients with chronic suppurative otitis media].

The all-purpose small-sized portable helium-neon laser unit LTM-I has been tested in a clinic. The unit is constructed on the basis of a quantum generator of 0.5-1.0 mW with a wave length of 632.8 nm. The unit is provided with special appliances allowing emission to be brought to the external auditory passage and the tympanic cavity. The unit was used to treat 110 patients with chronic purulent middle otitis. Exposure lasted 10-12 min. The treatment course consisted of 7-12 sessions. The favourable effect was noted by the 6-7th day of treatment in 52 patients with chronic purulent mesotympanitis with a protracted torpid course. Improvement of the cytological picture, disappearance of the microbial flora, normalization of immunological indices made it possible to arrive at a conclusion on the existence of a certain adaptogenic mechanism of action of laser emission.
