[Morbidity from various causes in rural children in the Republic of Moldova].

Child morbidity in the rural areas of the Republic of Moldavia was evaluated based on the data of attendances for medical care and complex medical examinations performed in 7,434 children aged between 0 and 14 years from five districts of the Republic. The age-group, sex and disease-groups distribution of morbidity are presented. These data were compared with the results obtained in other areas of the former Soviet Union. Measures for lowering the morbidity in the rural children of the Republic of Moldavia are suggested.

[The evaluation of the nitrate and nitrite content of meals in Moldova].

Between 1986 and 1990 the content in nitrites and nitrates of the daily meals in various collectivities in Moldavia was determined. The nitrite content ranged between 1.3 mg. NO2-/day (Suceava) and 7.38 mg NO2-/day (Botoşani) and the nitrate content between 24.93 mg NO3-/day (Suceava) and 92.30 mg. NO3-/day (Galaţi). The content in these poisons of the daily meals in two crèches from Iaşi and Bacău was also analysed, high values for both of them being found in the Bacău crèche. Some measures are suggested.

[Population migration and tuberculosis].

Characteristic features of a migratory process of tuberculosis patients in the Republic of Moldova were subjected to study. Two tendencies have been revealed: growth of a number of the arriving subjects and deterioration of the structure of pulmonary tuberculosis among them. Patients who arrived from the places of confinement where morbidity persists on a high level constitute a particular hazard concerning tuberculosis dissemination. Certain organization measures have been taken. The epidemiologic situation for tuberculosis in the penitentiary-labour establishments at the republican Ministry of Internal Affairs was subjected to a comprehensive analysis with subsequent discussion of the results at a meeting of the staff of the Ministry of Public Health; instruction and plan of measures to be taken have been compiled by both ministries; a permanent board has been instituted for rendering help to medical workers of the penitentiary establishments; all law-protective organs have been involved in tuberculosis control; a specialized institution has been set up with a hospital for 200 beds intended for skilled examination and treatment of patients. As a result, the index of tuberculosis morbidity in the republican penitentiary-labour establishments reduced by more than half to promote an improvement of the epidemiologic situation in the republic.

Evaluating selection at intermediate scales within genes provides robust identification of genes under positive selection in M. tuberculosis clinical isolates.

Multiple studies have reported genes in the M. tuberculosis (Mtb) genome that are under diversifying selection, based on genetic variants among Mtb clinical isolates. These might reflect adaptions to selection pressures associated with modern clinical treatment of TB. Many, but not all, of these genes under selection are related to drug resistance. Most of these studies have evaluated selection at the gene-level. However, positive selection can be evaluated on different scales, including individual sites (codons) and local regions within an ORF. In this paper, we use GenomegaMap, a Bayesian method for calculating selection, to evaluate selection of genes in the Mtb genome at all three levels. We present evidence that the intermediate analysis (windows of codons) yields the most credible list of candidate genes under selection (excluding PPE and PE_PGRS genes, which are predicted less reliably due to frequent sequencing errors). A further advantage of this approach is that it identifies specific regions within proteins that are under selective pressure, which is useful for structural and functional interpretation. In an analysis of two separate collections of Mtb clinical isolates (from Moldova; and a globally-representative set), we observed 53 and 173 significant genes under selection, with 36% overlap. The lists of genes under selection include many drug-resistance genes, as well as other genes that have previously been reported to be under selection (resR, phoR). The specific regions under selection identified within drug-resistance genes are shown to correspond to protein structural features known to be involved in resistance, supporting accuracy of the method. Positive selection in several ESX-1-related genes was also observed, suggesting adaptation to immune pressure.

Enteric viruses in the Danube river water and sludge.

A study of the viral pollution of the Roumanian course of the Danube river was carried out from 1972 to 1974. The presence of enteric viruses was investigated in 123 water samples, taken by the gauze swab method and in 116 sludge samples from the bottom of the river. The samples were collected from 20 sampling points along the river from Moldova Veche to Brăila, in accordance with the water use and the main pollution sources. Viruses were recovered from 17.5% of the samples. The frequency of virus isolations from water samples was similar to that observed in sludge samples. Therefore, the viral pollution of the Romanian course of the Danube showed a low level in comparison with other rivers, though two concentration techniques into suckling mice and into tissue cultures, were used for each sample.

[Essential arterial hypertension in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus during and after balneotherapy followed-up for 6 years].

The statistical correlations between body weight, glycemia, total lipids, cholesterol in 200 patients with essential hypertension, especially borderline essential hypertension, followed up for 6 years indicate that the complex environmental factors in Slănic-Moldova Health Resort associated with balneotherapy may induce a return to normal values of the above mentioned parameters. Good results were also obtained in the patients with essential hypertension and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, their treatment including reduction diets (1200-1400 calories/day).
