Dental fracture risk of metal vs plastic laryngoscope blades in dental models.

BACKGROUND: Dental fracture is a complication of laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubation. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare the potential fracture rates in dental models using metal laryngoscope blades with those using plastic laryngoscope blades. METHODS: Size 3 Macintosh plastic and metal laryngoscope blades were applied against 4 different dental model materials at varying torques to determine when the dental model material would fracture. RESULTS: The plastic blade did not fracture any of the dental model materials. The metal blade fractured the glass dental model material even at the lowest torque setting. At a moderate torque setting, the plastic blade showed evidence of structural failure, whereas the metal blade did not fail at any torque setting. Fracture of wooden dowel and ceramic teeth model materials occurred with the metal blade but only at torque settings higher than what the plastic blade could achieve. CONCLUSION: Based on the dental fracture models studied, plastic laryngoscope blades have a lower potential for dental fracture compared with metal blades. Plastic laryngoscope blades would be best suited for trainees performing routine intubations under direct supervision. Metal blades would be more advantageous in difficult intubations preferably done by experienced intubators.

[The study on three-dimensional laser scanning of dental model and computer aided set-up].

A new laser scanning and measurement method was introduced for dental model three-dimensional form. A laser diode was used as scanning light source, two CCDs (they were fixed specially) received the diffused light reflected from the dental model. The dental model rotating-moved back and forth, and horizontal moved from one side to another along horizontal axis simultaneously. Whole dental model can be scanned in 3 minutes, general precision was up to 0.03 mm. The computer can display distinctly three-dimensional images of dental model in different directions and give three-dimensional coordinate data, distance, angle, and remove teeth and make set-up after scanning. With advantages of high precision, fast speed and excellent object, the new method can be of an important applied value in orthodontic clinic.

[Study on CAM system for dental model].

The purpose of this study was to introduce our newly-developed CAM system for dental model and to examine the shape reproducibility and measurement reliability of the CAM modelling. The system is composed of a measuring unit, which obtains three-dimensional shape information from the dental model using laser scanning, and an engineering workstation, which creates a three-dimensional graph of the dental model. Output module program which can directly process and output the three-dimensional shape data to the wide use modeling systems was developed as the software of this CAM system. Four different CAM models, that, WAX model, STL model, FDM model, and SL model, were made based on the graph of the dental model taken from a mandibular prognathic patient. The measurement reliability of each CAM model were evaluated using a contact three-dimensional measurement unit. All CAM models except a WAX model demonstrated good shape reproducibility without a blind area, suggesting no problem of the three-dimensional shape data and the output module program. Measurement reliability of each CAM model was 0.12 +/- 0.08 mm in graph, 0.25 +/- 0.05 mm in WAX, 0.28 +/- 0.16 mm in SL, 0.31 +/- 0.15 mm in FDM, and 0.39 +/- 0.18 mm in STL. These results suggested clinical feasibility of this system in accordance with electronic storage of medical information.

[Study of dental model testing tool based on robot theory].

A new three dimensional testing and analysing system of dental model is discussed It is designed based on the motion theory of robots. The system is capable of not only measuring the three dimensional sizes of dental models, but also saving and outputing the tested data. The construction of the system is briefly introduced here.
