Types of medical writing and teaching of writing in U.S. medical schools.

U.S. medical schools were surveyed to determine which types of medical writing are most important for physicians, house officers, and medical students to learn and whether such types are formally taught. According to the responding schools, the five most important types were: write-up of the patient history and physical examination, progress note and discharge summary (tied), peer-reviewed published paper (of either clinical or laboratory research), and grant proposal. Certain types, however, were considered more important for some categories of physicians and trainees than others. Although these major types of writing represent complex and diverse writing tasks, they are not taught extensively in medical schools or thoroughly explained in the literature on medical writing.

Medical writing and publication.

Medical writing and publication are important in developing the scholarly base of family medicine, as well as being integral to an academic career. The author must choose the best format for the topic-research report, review article, book chapter, or other. The five steps in writing for publication are: 1) conceptualization of the topic and how best to present data; 2) organization of material; 3) composition; 4) revision of drafts; and 5) manuscript preparation and submission. The author must overcome the impediments to scholarly activity, such as lack of time, and resolve to ascribe a high priority to medical writing and publication.

Assessment and significance of Arthur Conan Doyle's medical writings.

Doyle's medical writings represent a valuable contribution to both the scientific and nonscientific aspects of medicine of the late 19th Century. Up to the present, accounts of these writings have been few, and none of them have been evaluative of their scientific merit. Analysis of Doyle's writings on infectious diseases in particular reveals a remarkable insight, for the 1880s, into the bacterial causation of disease and prevention through immunization.
