The ophthalmologist's office: planning and practice. Life insurance.

Life insurance is a necessary part of life. There are many types of insurance, with varying costs, so each individual situation calls for a carefully tailored policy, modified periodically according to one's changing needs. To do this requires some basic knowledge on the part of the purchaser, plus the coordinated help of a competent insurance advisor, lawyer, and accountant. The medical prescription a physician writes first requires an adequate examination and workup of the patient, following which it is written for a specific purpose. In the same way, the life insurance plan selected by an individual should be decided upon only after a complete history and examination of that person and his or her needs.

A survey of state insurance commissioners concerning genetic testing and life insurance.

Rapid advances in genetic testing have stimulated growing concern about the potential for misuse of genetic data by insurance companies, employers, and other third parties. Thus far, reports of genetically based discrimination in life insurance have been anecdotal. Reasoning that state insurance commissioners were likely to be aware of (1) the extent of current use of and interest in genetic tests by life insurers and (2) consumer complaints about insurance being denied because of genetic condition or because of genetic test results, we conducted a survey of that group. We received responses from 42 of the 51 jurisdictions. Our results suggest (1) that those who regulate the life insurance industry do not yet perceive genetic testing to pose a significant problem in how insurers rate applicants, (2) that life insurers have much legal latitude to require genetic tests, and (3) that so far few consumers have formally complained to commissioners about the use of genetic data by life insurers.

Development of an effective utilization management program at Celtic Life Insurance Company.

Celtic Life Insurance Company's (Celtic) utilization management program demonstrates that insurance companies, like hospitals, can develop a high level of quality assurance in utilization management by maintaining a professional clinical staff, developing special programs to target specific medical concerns, and conducting ongoing audits. Celtic's High Risk Maternity Program, developed in 1988 as an adjunct to the utilization management program, provides education about pregnancy and childbirth, screens pregnant insureds, and offers case management for high-risk pregnancies. Pregnant insureds who volunteer to case management are referred to the Rose Bud Program, a premature labor prevention program that was developed by Northwestern National Life Insurance Company with Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
