HELD: Prior judicial approval is not required for a surrogate to exercise the state constitutional right of self-determination of a patient who has become incompetent and who, while competent, specifically expressed her wishes regarding medical treatment decisions orally or in writing. The surrogate, in so exercising that right, must satisfy herself that certain requirements are met.

[Intracranial chordoma--report of two cases with cytochemical study].
Intracranial chordoma is very uncommon. We report two cases of intracranial chordoma with cytochemical studies. Case 1: A 66-year-old housewife was admitted on February 10, 1981, complaining of disturbance of visual acuity and bitemporal hemianopsia. A plain skull film showed normal finding with no calcification. CT showed a spherical ring contrast enhancement with intraluminal low density area in the suprasellar cistern. Pneumoencephalogram showed a suprasellar mass with filling defect of the anterior part of the third ventricle. On February 28, 1981, the tumor was intracapsually removed by transfrontal approach. The tumor had re-brown-turbid fluid. On March 16, she was discharged with no disturbance of visual acuity and visual field. But she again complained of visual disturbance and was hospitalized on October 26, 1981. Second operation was performed through trans-frontal route. The tumor with pus-like fluid was resected subtotally and postoperative radiation was given with 4,500 rads. Histologically the tumor had physaliferous cells cytomorphologically. Cytochemical study: cytoplasm and matrix were detected positively with PAS stain, Mucicarmine stain, Alcian blue stain, and Colloid-Iron stain. Mucinous glycogen was positive by PAS stain after diastase digestion test. These mucinous material was not stained with Sudan stain. Case 2: A 36-year-old man was admitted with paresthesia on right lower face on September 27, 1983. In the past history he complained of diplopia for several months in 1978 and 1982. A tomography of the skull showed a spherical soft mass in the sphenoid sinus and a calcified lesion from the posterior clinoid process to the floor of the third ventricle.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Resistance to re-challenge in the Brown Norway rat model of vasculitis is not always complete and may reveal separate effector and regulatory populations.
Administration of mercuric chloride to Brown Norway rats results in T helper type 2 (Th2)- dominated autoimmunity characterized by high immunoglobulin E (IgE) concentrations, the production of multiple IgG autoantibodies, including those to glomerular basement membrane (GBM), arthritis and caecal vasculitis. After 14 days animals immunoregulate and auto-immunity resolves even if mercuric chloride injections are continued. In a third phase, if animals are re-challenged with mercuric chloride 6 weeks later, they show only attenuated autoimmunity with lower anti-GBM antibody concentrations and arthritis scores. Resistance to the induction of anti-GBM antibodies can also be achieved following an initial challenge with low-dose (one-tenth standard dose) mercuric chloride. We have now studied this resistant phase in more detail. We have shown, first, that following an initial full-dose mercuric chloride challenge, resistance also affects susceptibility to caecal vasculitis. Second, following an initial full-dose mercuric chloride challenge, the IgE response upon re-challenge is initially accelerated but subsequently enters a resistant phase and third, following an initial challenge with low-dose mercuric chloride, resistance is also seen to the induction of caecal vasculitis but is not seen in IgE serology (where results suggest competing effector and regulatory cell populations). Studying such regulatory phases in animal models of autoimmunity may be of benefit in the future in designing new therapies for human vasculitis.

Paternal investment and reproductive success in the California mouse, Peromyscus californicus
In species with biparental care, the degree of parental investment of each parent may be related to the size of the litter, the parental effort of the partner and the probability of future reproductive success with the same partner. These factors were examined in single females and mated pairs of Peromyscus californicus who were required to 'forage' for food by running in a wheel. Offspring survival and growth, parental behaviour, amount of food obtained by running in the wheel and inter-birth intervals between litters were recorded. Females alone were able to raise litters of two pups, but not four pups. Mated pairs were able to raise a litter of four pups. Litters of one or two pups reared with the mother alone grew as fast as pups reared with both parents. Single females that kept their pups alive had a mean inter-birth interval of 53 days; paired females had a mean inter-birth interval of 37 days. These results show the effect of male parental investment on reproductive success when parents must forage for food: the presence of the male resulted in four times as many pups reared over a 74-day period as a female could rear on her own.
