[Efficacy and tolerance of trichlorophene in hymenolepiasis and taeniarinchiasis].

The paper deals with the clinical trials of the anthelmintic trichlorofen. The clinical and parasitological efficacy and tolerance of the agent for hymenolepiasis and taeniarinchiasis were studied. Twelve patients with hymenolepiasis and 5 with taeniarinchiasis were examined. Trichlorofen was shown to be effective in treating these infections, fairly tolerated and convenient for outpatient treatment. Eleven of the 12 with hymenolepiasis and 5 with taeniarinchiasis were cured.

Comparative clinical studies of nitazoxanide, albendazole and praziquantel in the treatment of ascariasis, trichuriasis and hymenolepiasis in children from Peru.

Three randomized clinical studies were conducted in 2000 to evaluate the efficacy of nitazoxanide paediatric suspension compared to albendazole in the treatment of ascariasis and trichuriasis and praziquantel in the treatment of hymenolepiasis in children from Cajamarca, Peru. Nitazoxanide was administered at a dose of 100 mg (age 1-3 years) or 200 mg (age 4-11 years) twice daily for 3 days, albendazole as a 400-mg single dose and praziquantel as a 25-mg/kg single dose. Post-treatment parasitological examinations were carried out on 3 faecal samples, each collected on a different day between 21 and 30 days following initiation of treatment. Nitazoxanide cured 89% (25/28), 89% (16/18) and 82% (32/39) of the cases of ascariasis, trichuriasis and hymenolepiasis respectively compared with 91% (32/35), 58% (11/19) and 96% (47/49) for the comparator drugs. Each of the drugs produced egg reduction rates in excess of 98%. There were no significant adverse events or abnormalities in haematology or clinical chemistry values or urinalysis.

[Testing CK group preparations in hymenolepiasis in white mice].

The drugs CK-1 and CK-2 are a kerosene milky-stage walnut (Juglans spp.) extract. The drugs CK-3, CK-4, and CK-5 are derived from monkshood (Aconitum) roots, garlic (Allium sativum), and Ferula, respectively. Albino mice were infected with hymenolepiasis by the procedure of B.A. Astafyev et al. (1989). The mice were aged 3 weeks, weighed 7-8 g, and spontaneous invasion-free. The doses of 25 to 100 mg/kg were tested. The antihelminthic effects of the extragent of the drugs--aircraft kerosine purified by the authors' procedure--were additionally examined. The purified aircraft kerosine was found to have moderate antihelminthic effects, but failed to provide 100% antihelminthic activity when given even in very high doses (500 mg/kg or more). The drug CK-1, 100 mg/kg, completely eliminated hymenolepiasis in the experimental animals. Other drugs CK-3, CK-4, and CK-5 used in doses of 100 mg/kg body weight failed to provide 100% antihelminthic efficiency.

[The clinico-immunological characteristics of hymenolepiasis].

Clinical manifestations were observed only 16 out of 61 patients aged 15-32 years who had hymenolepiasis. Despite their degree, there was impaired dexylose absorption, lower serum lysozyme activity and higher serum complement activity, depressed immunological reactivity parameters (the count of T- and B-lymphocytes, their functional activity), decreased IgA titer and increased IgE titer in the sera in all the patients observed. Six months after the effective dehelminthization, varying immunodepression still remained in all the convalescents. There types of restoration of immunological reactivity were identified: torpid, reactive and highly reactive. The torpid type was significantly more frequently observed in patients with subclinical (asymptomatic) hymenolepiasis course than in patients with its clinical manifestation.

Hymenolepiasis: an unusual cause of diarrhoea in Western Europe.

A young Indian man presented in England with a 6-month history of diarrhoea which started just before leaving India. He was found to have tropical enteropathy and H. nana infestation, but while the infestation and symptoms disappeared with antihelminthic treatment, the tropical enteropathy persisted. Hymenolepiasis is not well recognised as a cause of diarrhoea amongst Asians in Western Europe.

[Clinical and epidemiological characteristics of hymenolepiasis in the Ivano-Frankovsk region].

Based on their retrospective epidemiological analysis and examination of 56 outpatient case histories, the authors have studied the clinical and epidemiological regularities of hymenolepiasis in the Ivano-Frankovsk region, which is characterized by: 1) its epidemic and familial pattern, mainly afflicting rural populations, young schoolchildren in particular; 2) high contagiousness and incidence of multiinvasions in the tense foci; 3) a number of the most typical syndromes identified in the clinical picture of helminthic infections, which may serve as criteria for selecting patients for laboratory studies.

[The activity of acetyl COA hydrolase (AACo) and aminotransferases AspAT and AlAt in the course of experimental hymenolepiasis].

Buffalo male rats were infected with Hymenolepis diminuta. On 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th and 52nd day of infection blood and liver were collected to determine AACo, AspAt, AlAt in the blood serum and in liver homogenates. In the course of teniosis in rats the activities of all examined enzymes show changes in the serum and in liver homogenates. The most pronounced ones occur between the 7th and 21st day of infection. In the authors' opinion this is related to the highest pathogenicity of H. diminuta and especially with toxic action at this time. Determination of AACo activity proved to be a useful test to follow up the dynamics of organ changes in the course of hymenolepiasis.

[Effect of experimental hymenolepiasis on various tissue reactions in rats].

In the course of experimental hymenolepiasis in rats, varying mobilization of mastocytes, dependent on the organ of their origin, was observed. The highest was in the small intestine, lower in the mesenterial lymph nodes and the spleen. Various degree of correlation between the mastocyte mobilization and the histopathological changes was stated.

[Clinical aspects of hymenolepiasis in pediatrics].

The present integral clinical and laboratory study was carried out in 325 children infected with Hymenolepis nana. Results showed that H. nana is found among the top five intestinal parasitosis in school children in Mexico City, in the majority of the cases associated with protozoans and other helminths, especially and with Giardia lamblia. Although the amount of parasites found is small, the clinical manifestations vary very little with larger amounts. The most important and more constant clinical manifestations in those solely infected with H. nana and with other combinations are: abdominal pain, hyporexia and irritability. We have seen that in patients infected solely with H. nana, there is weight loss, meteorism and flatulences. In those associated with G. lamblia, diarrhea is one of the most frequent manifestations. Hymenolepiasis is an important disease in our environment due to its high frequency among pre-school and school children and its constant identifiable clinical manifestations.

[An analysis of the results of clinical trials of praziquantel analogs in intestinal cestode and trematode infections. 1. The treatment of intestinal cestode infections (diphyllobothriasis, taeniasis, hymenolepiasis)].

The studies have demonstrated a high efficacy of prasiquantel in therapy of enteric cestodiases. No differences in the efficacy and tolerance of prasiquantel analogs manufactured by various pharmaceutic firms (azinox, CIS; pikiton, China; biltricide, Bayer, India; cesol, Merk, India; cisticide, Merk India) were detected. Prasiquantel single dose (15 mg/kg) efficacies in diphyllobothriasis, taeniarhynchiasis, and taeniasis made up 91.4, 98.5, and 100%, respectively. In hymenolepiasis the efficacy of a total dose (40 and 50 mg/kg given twice with a 10-day interval) was 88.9%.

[Reactive changes in hemopoiesis in hymenolepiasis].

Signs of hypoplastic anemia in experimental hymenolepiasis become manifest when immature cestodes develop and gain severity at the stage of mature cestodes. Phagocytic activity of neutrophils acquires an undulating pattern. Dehelminthization of mice with fenasal (1000 mg/kg/day) or asinox (75 mg/kg, daily) made hypoplastic processes in the bone marrow reversible and precluded routine undulation of phagocytosis.
