Incidence of non-cholera vibrios in Hungary.

In the period 1971 to 1976, 200 non-cholera vibrio (NCV) strains were isolated in Hungary; 18 of the cultures were derived from 34 729 faecal and 182 from 237 surface water samples. Ninety-two strains belonged to the Heiberg-Smith group I and 108 to group II. Two strains failed to give the string test and 3 were pteridine resistant. The strains were classified into 48 serotypes according to Smith's system. Faecal NCV strains belonged to serotypes 46 and 328; these serotypes did not occur in water. Of the 18 faecal strains 13 were isolated from 18 048 persons who had travelled in cholera-infected areas, and 5 strains from persons who had never left Hungary (2 from 4559 patients with diarrhoea and 3 from 6061 healthy individuals). These data indicate that although NCV are present in the environment, they play an insignificant role in enteric infections in Hungary.

Down's syndrome: chromosome analysis of 362 cases in Hungary.

A survey is given of the karyotypes observed in 362 children clinically diagnosed as cases of Down's syndrome from whom material was sent to 8 collaborating cytogenic laboratories in Hungary during the period 1965-1974. The sample studied cytogenetically constitutes about 20% of all children born in Hungary in this decade with Down's syndrome. The ways in which patients were selected for cytogenetic examinations could not be specified. In the sample, standard trisomy 21 was found in 91.7%, translocations in 3.9% and mosaicism in 4.4%. The mean age of the mothers of the children investigated was 29.05 years, a relatively low figure which may be explained by the decrease of the mean maternal age over the last decades.

Haemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies to B.K. virus in Hungary.

Antibody inhibiting the haemagglutination by B.K. virus was found in 64% of the serum samples collected from 949 subjects in Hungary. The frequency of seropositivity was the lowest (17%) among infants 1 and 2 years of age and the highest (93%) in the age group 16 to 20 years. The subsequent age groups showed a slow continuous decline. The age-distribution curve drawn on the basis of the geometric means of titres has two peaks, one between 3 and 5 years of age and another between 21 and 30 years of age, reaching 6.74 and 7.05, respectively, as expressed in terms of log2 units. The prevalence of haemagglutination-inhibiting antibody to B.K. virus in Hungary and its distribution by age are similar to those reported from other European countries.

Coexistence of carbapenemase and hypervirulence-associated genes among Klebsiella pneumoniae high-risk clones in Hungary.

INTRODUCTION: Strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae carrying hypervirulence and carbapenemase genes represent a rapidly emerging global public health threat. Our study aimed to comprehensively characterise the genomics of hypervirulence-associated and carbapenemase genes carrying K. pneumoniae (hv(a)CpKp) isolates in Hungary. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between January 2022 and April 2024, 89 aerobactin (iucA-D/iutA)-positive non-duplicate carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae isolates from 15 Hungarian healthcare institutes underwent short-read (Illumina, MiSeq, NextSeq) whole-genome sequencing, followed by detailed plasmid analysis using long-read sequencing (Nanopore, MinION) in a representative subset of 32 strains. RESULTS: Most isolates (79/89) belonged to the high-risk clone ST147. Hypervirulence-associated (hva) genes-including rmpA/rmpA2, peg344, shiF, iucA-D, and iutA-were universally present, and 59 isolates possessed chromosomally integrated yersiniabactin loci. Most isolates (87/89) carried the bla NDM-1 carbapenemase gene. Hypervirulence-associated genes were most frequently (29/32) associated with IncHI1B/IncFIB(Mar) plasmids. Notably, we identified plasmids carrying both hva and carbapenemase genes-designated as hybrid plasmids-in 13 of 32 strains. The bla NDM-1 was linked to the IS26 transposase and was present in conserved, identical cassettes on all bla NDM-1-carrying plasmids. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Our study identified hv(a)CpKp strains, particularly the ST147 clone, circulating in Hungary. Our findings highlight the need for routine virulence gene monitoring and continuous genomic and plasmid-based surveillance to mitigate the clinical and epidemiological impact of emerging hv(a)CpKp lineages.

Novel avian calicivirus genome with type IV internal ribosomal entry site (IRES) in black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in Hungary.

In this study, a taxonomically novel avian calicivirus detected and characterized by next generation sequencing, RT-PCR and Sanger sequencing methods in faecal specimen collected from black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in Hungary. The complete genome length of the calicivirus strain gull/HA15097/HUN/2018 (PZ810127) is remarkably long, 8,845 nucleotides, which had type IV internal ribosomal entry site (IRES) at the 5', and a stem-loop-II-like (s2m) sequence motif at the 3' untranslated regions. The VP1 capsid protein had less than 26% aa identity to the members of the known calicivirus genera. Caliciviruses appear to be widespread not only in mammals including humans but also in various bird species.

Caries prevalence of preschoolchildren in Baja, Hungary in 1955 and 1975.

In 1975 caries epidemiologic investigations were performed in 1,017 preschoolchildren of Baja, aged 3--6 years. The data were analyzed and compared with those of 620 preschoolchildren of the same city in 1955. A mean increase of 10.9% of the caries frequency (percentage of examinees with caries), and a mean increase of 43.5% of the caries intensity(dmft count per examinee) could be observed in spite of a better vitamin D prophylaxis. The possible cariogenic role of the increased surgar consumption (37.5 kg from 24.4 kg per individual during 20 years) is discussed.

Aetiological studies of hypospadias in Hungary.

A complex aetiological (epidemiological, teratological and genetic) study was made in 294 index patients with simple isolated hypospadias. The epidemiological study conducted by the help of personal interviews of the mothers revealed a higher frequency of index patients among children born between August and December, among twins, mainly monozygotic, and finally in the lower birth weight groups and among first-borns. The teratological study showed a higher frequency in mothers of index patients who had had sex hormone treatment, mainly progestogen, before the 16th gestational week. This seems to indicate the aetiological role of fetal androgen deficit caused by the regulation disturbances of human choriogonadotropin. The genetic family study completed by personal examination of first-degree male relatives showed a familial clustering (4.0% versus a point prevalence of 0.44% in live-births). Both the pattern of affected relatives (h2 values 0.62 +/- 0.21 and 0.72 +/- 0.33 in fathers and brothers, respectively, not differing significantly from each other) and further characteristics (other malformations were not frequent in relatives) correspond to the multifactorial-threshold model.

[History of traumatology in Hungary].

The history of the Hungarian Traumatology since the 16th century up to the present days is outlined by the author. The most important works--dealing with the treatment of the fractures and with the activity of other areas of the traumatology--are enumerated. Moreover, the factors promoting the development of the Hungarian traumatology are specified and the important surgeons active in the field of traumatology and the war operative surgery are named, who too have contributed to the development of the Hungarian traumatology. The importance of the Hungarian Institute of Traumatology--founded in 1956--is emphasized,--thus, the traumatology became an independent section of the Hungarian public health; and centrally directed and organized function of the traumatology was assured.

[Consumption of drinking water by workers in a steel foundry during working hours in Hungary].

In a former paper the authors had investigated the fluorine intake per kilogram body weight and its extreme possibilities. This study includes 97 workers of a steel foundry. The amount of liquid ingested during working hours was measured, for 30 persons in summer during 90 days and 67 persons in winter during 201 days. Inside and outside temperatures were recorded. The mean age was 40,02 years. The mean intake of drinking water was, in summer 3732 ml (+/- s 1176 and +/- sx 123 ml) and in winter 1835 ml (+/- s 684 and +/- sx 48 ml). The mean value was 2422 ml and the extreme values were 500 and 8500 ml. The calculation of the individual mean values showed however, that the water intake follows an irregular pattern of distribution. About 11% consumed more than 41, and about 2% more than 51 per day continuously. In this study, there are those who consume habitually little, more and a lot of drinking water. With the results, the authors are examining the possibilities of the maximum fluorine intake.
