Gestalt theory and morbid anatomy.

Contact with medical students as a university teacher has shown that there are different types of aptitude: 5/9 of German medical students possess a visual faculty, 3/9 are kinaesthetic and only about 1/9 have the gift of the auditive faculty. Apart from this, there is a general quality which may be termed gestalt perception or gestalt blindness. The fact that for decades the attempt was made to relate qualitative differences in the characteristics of medical observations and pathological and anatomical findings to quantitative changes was the reason for the development of the concept of Relationspathologie . Intellectual pre-occupation with the perception of "gestalt qualities" has resulted in pathology in general being seen as the expression of the biophysics of open systems and making an organismic evaluation of its phenomena. The aim of all natural science is the recognition of order. Theoretical biology seeks an order free from hypotheses. Theoretical pathology involves the application of gestalt philosophy to the detection and evaluation of all potentially dangerous disturbances. Theoretical pathology has nothing to do with "natural philosophy", the "natural history viewpoint", the " vitalism " of the turn of the century or the "holism" of the 1930s . Gestalt qualities can be characterized by means of the " Ehrenfels criteria". In most cases this means distinguishing between "space gestalt", "time gestalt", "tone gestalt", and "sentence gestalt". As defined by gestalt theory, mental and physical processes correspond. Gestalt can always be defined and understood in concrete terms. In the gestalt the conceptual contradiction between "external" and "internal" is overcome. External phenomena are the manifestations of internal nature. In the fields of pathological anatomy, gestalt theory has direct methodological relevance with regard to the following: a) the concept of homology b) the conceptual idea of what is known as "specific inflammation" c) the theory of stages in minor organ diseases d) the characterization of the various forms of pathomorphosis e) patho-anatomical diagnostics according to the laws of mathematical logic. The relationship between individual sciences and philosophy has always been critical. The individual science and philosophy are mutually obscured from one another. Research into facts and research into essence come together, as in a "gestalt circle", to form a single process of understanding. All lawfulness and order originates from a principle of the mind. The visible manifestation of this principle is the innermost nature of the gestalten .

Gestalt theory reconfigured: Max Wertheimer's anticipation of recent developments in visual neuroscience.

In the 1920s Max Wertheimer enunciated a credo of Gestalt theory: the properties of any of the parts are governed by the structural laws of the whole. Intense efforts at the time to discover these laws had only very limited success. Psychology was in the grips of the Fechnerian tradition to seek exact relationships between the material and the mental and, because the Gestalt movement could not deliver these, it never attained a major standing among students of perception. However, as neurophysiological research into cortical processing of visual stimuli progresses the need for organizing principles is increasingly making itself felt. Concepts like contour salience and figure segregation, once the province of Gestalt psychology, are now taking on renewed significance as investigators combine neural modeling and psychophysical approaches with electrophysiological ones to characterize neural mechanisms of cognition. But it would be perilous not to take heed of some of the lessons that the history of the Gestalt movement teaches.

Wolfgang Köhler and Gestalt theory: an English translation of Köhler's Introduction to die physischen Gestalten for Philosophers and Biologists.

This article presents an English translation (from the German) of one of gestalt psychology's most significant documents, first published in 1920 in Wolfgang Kohler's Die physischen Gestalten in Ruhe und im stationdren Zustand (The Physical Gestalten at Rest and in a Stationary State). The book it introduces both embodies Kohler's extension of gestalt theory into new domains and did much to ensure the broad impact of these ideas and approaches. This introduction itself well illustrates Kohler's own thought processes both as his ideas emerged and as he sought to convince his readers of their value. Despite the fact that they are more than 70 years old, Kohler's words have many implications for late 20th century discussions of the relationships among psychology, physiology, and physics.

[Gestalt theory of V. v. Weizsäcker from the viewpoint of the psychology emotions].

The "Gestaltkreis" represents an important part in the psychosomatic theory-discussion, which can be understood as an incomplete contribution towards a general theory of emotions. Especially the relationship between perception and motion requires further consideration. Instead of a causal attribution, cyclic complementaries are important. Furthermore different degrees of organisation within the body-scheme and the affect-apparatus are mentioned.

Gestalt therapy: theory and practice.

Gestalt therapy, a particular type of psychotherapy, draws on existential and various Eastern philosophies, and aims to enable the individual to seek his or her own solutions to personal problems. Literally translated as 'whole', Gestalt focuses the individual to appreciate and experience the present. This article examines the Gestalt theory and considers its application to a terminally ill client and his wife.

Learning theory and gestalt therapy.

This article discusses the theory and operations of Gestalt Therapy from the viewpoint of learning theory. General comparative issues are elaborated as well as the concepts of introjection, retroflextion, confluence, and projection. Principles and techniques of Gestalt Therapy are discussed in terms of learning theory paradigm. Practical implications of the various Gestalt techniques are presented.

[Preliminary aspects relating to the problem-solving process].

Certain theoretical and methodological aspects related to cognition and problem solving processes are reviewed in order to emphasize the inferencial procedures by which individuals overcome difficulties and limitations present in a problem situation and realize and overcome their own inferential limitations. The rôle that certain primary elements, like axioms, have in the process of making explicit and complete formal structures is also emphasized. Ability to demonstrate correctly and some limitations concerning the methalogic properties of axiomatic systems are also seen in relation to the inferential processes of cognition. Eliminatory inferential processes for adopting decisions are discussed and focused from opposite standpoints as those of associative learning theory and Gestalt theory. The inferential process is evaluated from the internal difficulty of a problem state of nature to the intellective resources available to the subject in order to validate the adopted decisions in problem solving. This comprises methods going from trial-and-error exploration to insight phenomena, through the formulation of all logical possibilities and the process of discarding them by means of experience or inference. According to the symbolic level that represents the problem state of nature formal structures are built up to the point by which they need to be gestallically closed by the inclusion of new primary terms or concepts that could be identified as axioms. This king of closure is postulated as a requirement of the aptitude for mathematics.
