A structured approach to expert financial management: a financial development plan for nurse managers.

Faced with tighter budgets and diminishing resources, the success of nurse managers will be measured by their ability to identify and balance cost/quality issues effectively while managing staffing under variable patient census and demanding patient acuity. A structured approach to expert financial management can insure that nursing departments meet financial targets while maintaining integrity of clinical care.

The year 2000: requirements for the financial manager. A Delphi study of the healthcare financial manager in the year 2000.

The future of the healthcare financial management field looks bright. Those engaged in this field are expected to enjoy higher status, an enlarged role, higher salary, increased authority, and greater prestige. These gains will require increased knowledge and competence, as well as higher formal education, not only in the areas of accounting and finance, but also in management. These are some of the conclusions of a nationwide Delphi study organized by HFMA and its North Carolina chapter, the University of North Carolina's Department of Health Policy and Administration, and Arthur Young. More than 1100 experts divided into 10 panels were asked about a large number of topics and issues ranging from the future course of the healthcare field to the need for specialty certification in healthcare financial management. Following the report of the study, a panel of experts--financial managers, consultants, and academicians--discuss the implications of these findings and explore their effect on healthcare financial management in the year 2000.

Nursing as a business. Financial management.

Nursing financial management is the natural outgrowth of the increased responsibility being assumed by nursing administrators. Fiscal knowledge, while often complex, is an essential aspect of the administrator's repertoire of skills and must be mastered to ensure a position of power within the total organization. At the same time, nursing administrators must understand the broad scope of financial management and be willing to teach and to delegate financial control to other members of the nursing management team. Financial management is a triad of complex, ongoing processes essential to institutional management. Nursing must address this new challenge and accept the responsibility for the business aspects of nursing.

Staff nurse financial management committees--the nurse manager's guide to effective financial performance.

As Cohen states (1991, p. 25), "The future role that nursing will play in the health care delivery system is one of many major issues faced by contemporary nursing... Nursing must be able to determine realistically the cost of and evaluate the effectiveness of nursing care provided to its patients." A unit-based financial management committee is one very effective way of teaching the skills needed for the professional nurse to advance the practice in financial management. This will help nursing gain the professional status that they have always worked for. But beyond these very lofty ideals, a staff nurse managed financial management committee can make the nurse manager's life much easier. Staff nurses need to understand and accept the importance of managing the financial as well as the quality side of patient care. When this happens, the budget becomes theirs. Nurses develop a sense of ownership of the budget and learn how to effectively manage the unit's finances. Much staff nurse brain power is not used. Systems must be developed to access nurses' effective ideas for financial management--first in a financial management committee and then on the unit. Not only will this develop the professional status that nurses need and deserve, but it will also impact the cost of health care. In a society where the cost of an appendectomy requires Dayton Hudson to sell 39,000 Ninja Turtle action figures, Atlantic Richfield to sell 192,000 gallons of gas a day, Anheuser-Busch to sell 11,627 6-packs of 12 oz.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

An information system to improve financial management, resource allocation and activity planning: evaluation results.

UNLABELLED: An important strategy for improving resource management and cost containment in health care is to develop information systems that assist hospital managers in financial management, resource allocation, and activity planning. A crucial part of such development is a rigorous evaluation to assess whether the system accomplishes it's intended goals. PURPOSE: To evaluate CLASSICA, a Decision Support System (DSS), that assists nurse managers in financial management, resource allocation, staffing, and activity planning. METHODS: Using a pre-post test design with control units, CLASSICA was evaluated in four test units. Baseline data and simultaneous parallel measures were collected prior to system implementation at test sites and control units. Using expense reports, staffing and financial statistics, surveys, interviews with nurse managers, and logs as data sources, CLASSICA was evaluated on: cost reduction, quality of management information; usefulness as decision support for improved financial management and decision-making; user satisfaction; and ease of use. RESULTS: Evaluation results showed a 41% reduction in expenditures for overtime and extra hours as compared to a 1.8% reduction in control units during the same time period. Users reported a significant improvement in management information; nurse managers stated that they had gained control over costs. The system helped them analyze the relationships between patient activity staffing, and cost of care. Users reported high satisfaction with the system, the information and decision support it provided, and its ease of use. These results suggest that CLASSICA is a DSS that successfully assists nurse managers in cost effective management of their units.

Educating perioperative managers about materials and financial management.

One of the most resource intensive areas in many hospitals is the OR, which often accounts for more than 50% of a hospital's materials management budget. Surgical services managers often have no formal training in materials and financial management, but they are held accountable for one of the most costly clinical areas in the hospital. A program proposed for Navy perioperative nurse managers is a five-day course that covers the basics of Navy medical materials and financial management as they apply to the OR. Application strategies for the civilian sector also are discussed.

Leadership skills help financial managers achieve career success.

Financial managers who want to distinguish themselves in their organizations need to demonstrate their leadership ability. Because financial managers sometimes overlook the need for leadership skills, cultivating mentors who can teach them specific leadership skills, such as improved communications and entrepreneurship, may be necessary. Healthcare financial managers can sharpen their leadership skills by distinguishing between leadership and management, adopting a new mentoring model, evaluating the usefulness of new management techniques, understanding the connection between technology and leadership, looking for the solution beyond the problem, and being seen and heard within the organization.
