Family demography in a remote rural community in Zambia.

A community survey was conducted in a remote rural area of Zambia by The Kasanka Trust whose aims in running a National Park are to include aid to the community living around its borders. Selected results have been extracted from a general report by the Kasanka Trust, including awareness of HIV infection and tuberculosis. The remarkable population dynamics found in this apparently impoverished, poorly served community is highlighted.

Thai family demography: a review and research prospects.

"This paper attempts to give an overview of demographic knowledge on the Thai family and to suggest directions for future research." Aspects considered include marriage, marital disruption, household size and structure, headship, flexibility of Thai family structure, the family life cycle and inheritance patterns, and the impact of social change. Interpolating demography with families and households.

This paper argues that the field of household and family demography serves a critical role in the development of our understanding of the determinants and consequences of population trends. Like the community, families and households are situated between the two levels at which demographic research is ordinarily conducted--the individual and the nation-state. The results of the papers in this issue are used to illustrate the critical ways that intergenerational and gender relationships shape demographic processes.

The formal demography of families and households: an overview.

"The objective of the present paper is to give a brief overview of the subject matter of the formal demography of the family. Selected references are included, but no attempt is made to be exhaustive. No discussion of socio-economic determinants or consequences is included, because this overview is limited to the formal aspects of the field. "The...paper is divided into five parts. The first deals with the descriptive analysis of family and household size and composition, from both a cross-sectional and a longitudinal perspective. The next two sections discuss, in order, demographic determinants and consequences. This is followed by a brief section on projection methods and the conclusion."

Demography of family households.

A profile of the demography of individuals with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities (MR/DD) was developed from the Survey of Income and Program Participation, a national household survey. We estimated a total 1991 population of 2.97 million Americans with MR/DD, with 2.63 million living outside the formal long-term care system. Observations suggest that (a) families are the dominant form of support and, thus, a key constituency in disability policy; (b) a large cohort currently live in households headed by aging family members; and (c) there are significant economic disparities between subgroups of families, defined primarily along gender and racial lines.
