AI-generated familiarity estimates are a useful new source of information about word knowledge in Simplified Chinese.

This study evaluated the usefulness of AI-generated estimates of word familiarity for predicting word difficulty in Simplified Chinese, building on previous research in alphabetic languages. We found that familiarity estimates produced using large language models (LLMs) showed moderate-to-strong correlations with human familiarity ratings. These LLM estimates were the most effective predictors of both word naming and lexical decision times, surpassing traditional metrics such as word frequency and human familiarity ratings, while the latter still provided modest, non-overlapping variance. GPT-4o with English instructions produced superior results compared to the Chinese-centered models currently available. The results imply that LLM familiarity estimates are a valuable resource for Chinese psycholinguistics, supporting work across experimental design, modeling, and norming. We release familiarity estimates for 27,624 words for unrestricted research and educational use.

Speed of retrieval from long-term memory in relation to age, familiarity, and datedness of information.

The time required to name four groups of pictures was measured in 83 community dwelling males (18-70 years of age). One group consisted of objects used 50 to 70 years ago (unique dated exemplars), and another consisted of objects unique to contemporary times (unique contemporary exemplars). For comparison, other pictures of contemporary and dated objects commonly used in both periods were employed. There were three major findings. One, the familiarity of the pictured object is the major determinant of the time required to retrieve its name. Older subjects named the dated unique objects that were relatively more familiar to them more rapidly than did younger adults, while the reverse was true for contemporary unique objects. No age difference in the speed of naming common contemporary objects was found. Two, the overall age-related difference in naming latency was attributed to perceptual-motor aspects of the task. Three, the physical features as well as the familiarity of the object contributed to the speed of retrieval of the object's name.

Enhanced choice of familiar food in a food preference test after chlordiazepoxide administration.

Chlordiazepoxide (5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg) increased the time spent eating familiar laboratory chow, in a food-choice test in which both familiar and novel food objects were available. Chlordiazepoxide did not affect the feeding response to the novel food. Prior handling of the rats and repeat testing affected feeding responses in the test, although in ways which were different from and independent of the effect of chlordiazepoxide. Chlordiazepoxide may facilitate feeding responses by a direct enhancement of feeding motivation, and not necessarily secondarily by either a release of suppression of feeding or as attenuation of anxiety evoked by unfamiliarity.

Gut bacteria and their metabolic activities in familiar polyposis.

Earlier work had suggested that patients with large-bowel cancer can be characterized by carriage of clostridia capable of dehydrogenating the nucleus of steroids and by high faecal bile-acid concentrations. Familial polyposis is an inherited disease which untreated, will progress to cancer of the large bowel, and those affected might be expected to have these metabolic characteristics. However, enviromental factors seem to play no part in polyposis. Investigation of as yet unaffected children of known polyposis patients revealed that the gut flora of half of them did not degrade cholesterol in vivo andnor did flora from patients in whom polyposis had already been diagnosed. The reason for this is unknown, but if the same patients develop polyposis (i.e., they carry the abnormal gene) we would have a simple diagnostic test which could replace the continuing follow-up now required for the siblings and children of patients with polyposis.

Durability and Safety of Imeglimin as an Add-On to DPP-4 Inhibitors in Japanese Type 2 Diabetes: The 104-Week FAMILIAR Trial.

AIMS: To evaluate the long-term efficacy and safety of imeglimin added to dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes, focusing on glycemic durability and safety in elderly patients over 104 weeks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trial comprised a 24-week double-blind phase (imeglimin 1000 mg or placebo twice daily) followed by an 80-week open-label extension in which all patients received imeglimin. Eligible patients had inadequate glycemic control despite DPP-4 inhibitor monotherapy. The main assessment measured HbA1c changes from baseline to week 104. Secondary assessments included meal tolerance tests (MTT) for evaluating physiological changes in β-cell function and insulin resistance and safety monitoring. RESULTS: Of 117 randomized patients, 81 completed 104 weeks. In the early-start group that received imeglimin from week 0, the significant HbA1c reduction observed at week 24 (-0.65%) was maintained through week 104 (-0.55%; p < 0.001 vs. baseline). The delayed-start group that switched to imeglimin at week 24 achieved similar glycemic control thereafter. Elderly patients (≥ 65 years) in the early-start group maintained stable HbA1c reduction (-0.58%) without hypoglycemic events over 2 years. MTT analysis in the early-start group showed sustained improvements in glucose AUC and insulin sensitivity without unnecessary insulin secretion over time. CONCLUSIONS: Imeglimin added to DPP-4 inhibitors appeared to improve glycemic control for 104 weeks, without clear attenuation. The combination was well-tolerated with a low risk of hypoglycemia even in elderly patients. The long-term effect may be associated with improvements in insulin sensitivity.
