[Attempts at biotechnical induction of puberty in young female pigs. 2. Effects of various time intervals between one puberty induction with PMS and HCG to the following estrus synchronization on estrus and ovulation in animals about 190 days old].

A biological engineering approach to induce puberty in 125 young female fattening pigs aged 190 days was undertaken on the basis of a mixture of 500 IU PMS (Prolosanserum, Dessau) with 250 IU HCG (Gonabion, Dresden). The injections were made subcutaneously. Pronounced oestrus symptoms were recorded from the external genital organs of 80% of the probands up to ten days after injection, associated with toleration in 52.8% of them. Toleration usually started on the fourth to sixth days after injection. Cycles began to develop in 57.1% up to the next oestrus period. Animals with -/x weight increase per die of 400 g exhibited lower responses. Results in terms of heat and ovulation were lower along with shorter intervals, when oestric synchronisation was undertaken 53, 32, and 17 days after the induction of puberty (20 days Suisynchron, Bernburg; 750 IU PMS).

[Estrus synchronization in cattle by means of chlormadinone acetate ("Bovisynchron" Jenapharm) in the tropics. II. First results of the estrus synchronization of cattle with "Bovisynchron" at the Republic of Mali].

The first experiments are reported on oestrus synchronization in cattle in the Republic of Mali. The animals recieved Bovisynchron twice a day orally over a period of 15 days. The synchronization effect was marked; insemination was performed on the 5th and 6th day p.s. The intensity of the oestrus and especially the results of pregnancy are in close relationship to the breeding conditions and the general status of the animals. The oestrus synchronization is considered a favourable biotechnical method for regulating the reproduction provided that the animals are kept stationary or temporarily stationary.

[Methods for synchronizing estrus and selecting recipient heifers in embryo transplantation].

Threefold thorough gynecological investigations were carried out with a total of 108 heifers with normal cycle, which remained uninseminated--in their choice, treatment with hormonal preparations, and transplantation of embryos, reducing their number up to 76. With the first test group of 35 heifers estrus was synchronized with implants, containing 3 mg norgestomet each. On the 9th day these were removed, and the heifers were injected with 500 IU PMSG (Intervet) each. The animals of the second test group (73 in number) were injected with 7.5 mg prostaglandin F2-alfa at 11-day intervals. The conception rate was 31 per cent higher with heifer-recipients treated with norgestomet implants and serum gonadotropins. Death was established with 47 transplanted embryos (61.8 per cent). With 19 embryos (25 per cent) death set in on the 21st day, and with 28 ones (26.8 per cent)--within the period of the 60th days of pregnancy up to calving. In 17.10 per cent of the transplanted embryos migration was seen toward the opposite horn, on the side of which the ovary contained no yellow body.

Efficacy of altrenogest in synchronizing estrus in two swine breeding programs and effects on subsequent reproductive performance of sows.

In two herds that used different breeding and housing schemes, altrenogest (15 mg/d) was fed for 14 d to gilts or 10 d to sows in .45 kg of a diet formulated to meet or exceed their nutrient requirements. In Herd 1 (five breeding seasons per year), 63 of 123 gilts and 40 of 70 sows in seven replications were fed in individual crates to ensure proper intake. In Herd 2 (continuous breeding), 244 of 484 gilts in 20 replications received the treated feed in individual feeding stalls to which animals had free access. Average and median days to estrus were reduced (P less than .01) for treated gilts and sows compared with controls in both herds. Of 29 treated gilts that did not mate or become pregnant, three had cystic follicles, compared to 1 of 14 controls. There were no statistically significant treatment differences in litter size born or number of stillborn pigs in either herd, but farrowing rates of cycling gilts were 8% lower (P less than .05) in Herd 2 for treated gilts than for controls. Overall, altrenogest could be a valuable tool for improving reproductive efficiency by allowing producers to better control the estrous cycle.

Synchronized estrus and fertility of beef cows after weaning calves for short intervals.

In Exp. 1, the objective was to determine if interval of separating calves from cows (24 or 48 h) immediately before insemination affects detection and precision of estrus and pregnancy rates of lactating beef cows implanted with norgestomet. Separation of calves from cows for 24 h (n = 418) lengthened intervals to estrus, did not affect precision of estrus, reduced success of detecting estrus and lowered pregnancy rates relative to positive controls (48 h separation, n = 508). Cows with poor body condition, and not suckled for 24 h, conceived at lower rates than cows with similar condition that were not suckled for 48 h. Adverse effects of separation for only 24 h on fertility are apparently due to inadequate intervals between estrus and insemination at 48 h after removing implants. In Exp. 2, the objective was to determine effects of separating calves from cows for 48 h immediately before insemination on detection and precision of estrus and on pregnancy rate of ovulatory lactating beef cows injected twice with prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha). Weaning increased detection of estrus but overall pregnancy rates did not differ between suckled (n = 256) and nonsuckled (n = 221) cows. But, weaning calves improved pregnancy rates of young (2 to 3 yr) cows and reduced fertility among middle (4 to 6 yr)-aged cows. Increased pregnancy rates after weaning calves for 48 h are due largely to greater detection of estrus and inseminating more cows.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The use of estradiol benzoate to manage lambing period in ewes bred at synchronized estrus.

The induction and management of lambing was studied in a commercial flock of ewes. These ewes were bred at synchronized estrus and managed to lamb three times in 2 yr, with lambings occurring in the sequence of February, September and June. Ewes treated with 2 mg of estradiol benzoate in oil (i.m.) at approximately 17 d prior to term did not lamb in response to treatment. When 2 mg estradiol benzoate was given at 0800 on d 142 of gestation, lambing occurred an average of 37 +/- 5 h later in ewes treated in June or September and at 70 +/- 10 h later in ewes treated in February. The comparable figures for oil-treated ewes (control) were 70 +/- 5 h and 116 +/- 9 h, respectively. Altering the time of day of injection or using two injections 24 h apart did not alter the time for injection to lambing. Increasing the dose of estradiol benzoate to 15 mg decreased the time from injection to lambing (43 +/- 7 h, ewes treated in February) but also increased the incidence of dystocia (50% incidence). The incidence of dystocia averaged 8% for all other treatments and controls. Death loss of lambs to 1 wk of age was 12% and was not affected by treatment. The length of the lambing period was reduced from 9.0 +/- 3.3 d in control ewes to 3.6 +/- 1.1 d in induced ewes. A single injection of 2 mg estradiol benzoate given at 0800 on d 142 of gestation or a double treatment, with injections at 2000 on d 142 and 143, resulted in 53% of ewes lambing between 0800 and 1600 on each day of the lambing period, compared with 33% in control ewes.

[Effect of a gestagen used for the induction of synchronous estrus and fertilization of cattle].

The preparations Synchrosyn, Gestafortin, and Bovisynchron, having chlormadinonacetate as a common active ingredient, were used to induce synchronous estrus and fertilization in heifers. A total of 254 animals were involved belonging to the following breeds: Bulgarian Simmental, Bulgarian Red, Bulgarian Brown, and Black Pied. All three preparations were administered orally: Synchrosyn and Gestafortin were given with the forage at the rate of 10 mg chlormadinonacetate, and Bovisynchron was offered twice daily at an interval of 12 hours, rated 1 cu. cm each time, by means of a syringe (a daily dose of 20 mg clormadinonacetate).

Reproductive response of yearling beef heifers to a melengestrol acetate-prostaglandin F2 alpha estrus synchronization system.

A study was designed to evaluate estrus response and fertility after treatment with melengestrol acetate (MGA) and prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) in yearling beef heifers. Three hundred four heifers at three locations were allotted to one of two treatments: Treatment 1 served as a nonsynchronized control (CON); and heifers in Treatment 2 received .5 mg of MGA.animal-1.d-1 for 14 d and 25 mg of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) 17 d after MGA (MGA-PGF). Heifers in CON and MGA-PGF groups were artificially inseminated 12 h after observed estrus for 21 and 6 d after PGF2 alpha, respectively. Blood samples were collected from each heifer 10 d before and on the day MGA feeding began and 10 d before and on the day PGF2 alpha was administered. Heifers with concentrations of serum progesterone greater than 1 ng/mL on either date before administration of MGA or PGF2 alpha were considered pubertal. More (P = .02) prepubertal heifers that received MGA attained puberty by initiation of breeding than did CON heifers (72 vs 45%, respectively). The proportion of heifers that displayed estrus within 6 d after PGF2 alpha was greater (P less than .001) for MGA-PGF than for CON heifers (77 vs 25%, respectively) but was also influenced by location (P = .03). Conception rate at first service for MGA-PGF heifers that attained puberty during MGA feeding and before PGF2 alpha was not different (P = .50) from that of CON that attained puberty during the same period.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Use of Chronogest implants and Folltropin for estrus synchronization and superovulation in goats.

Six Barbari goats each were assigned randomly to treatments 1,2 or 3, comprising im injections of FSH (folltropin) at 12, 14 or 16 mg dose level respectively. Estrus was synchronized with intravaginal sponge impregnated with flugestone acetate (30 mg; chronogest) inserted for 12 days and cloprostenol (125 micrograms) im at the insertion as well as at removal of sponge. FSH treatment started 48 hr before the sponge removal as 4-day declining dose scheme. Estrus could be effectively synchronized in all goats under the study, with significant difference (P less than 0.05) in the onset of estrus between the treatment groups. All goats were administered with 750 IU hCG i.v. at estrus. Recording of ovarian response and embryo recovery was done 45 hr after the onset of estrus. The prime aim of superovulation was effectively achieved in Barbari goats with the use of chronogest implants and folltropin. There was no difference (P greater than 0.05) between the treatment groups in recovery of transferable embryos, however, 14 mg folltropin appeared to be near optimal dose. There was no adverse effect on the quality of recovered embryos with high doses of folltropin.

The influence of season on sow weaning to estrus interval and subsequent reproductive performance following estrus synchronization by batch weaning.

In 45 indigenous Nigerian sows, which had been synchronized in their estrous cycle by batch weaning, the interval was investigated from weaning to estrus in the rainy and dry seasons. It was found to be 3 1/2 days in each season. The heat was short, especially the standing estrus, which will have to be investigated further. There was no seasonal difference in the number of piglets weaned per sow. In the dry season, sows farrowing lost more weight from birth to weaning than in the rainy season. Sows farrowing into the rainy season delivered more piglets.
