Establishing the ELIXIR Microbiome Community.

Microbiome research has grown substantially over the past decade in terms of the range of biomes sampled, identified taxa, and the volume of data derived from the samples. In particular, experimental approaches such as metagenomics, metabarcoding, metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics have provided profound insights into the vast, hitherto unknown, microbial biodiversity. The ELIXIR Marine Metagenomics Community, initiated amongst researchers focusing on marine microbiomes, has concentrated on promoting standards around microbiome-derived sequence analysis, as well as understanding the gaps in methods and reference databases, and identifying solutions to the computational overheads of performing such analyses. Nevertheless, the methods used and the challenges faced are not confined to marine microbiome studies, but are broadly applicable to other biomes. Thus, expanding this Marine Metagenomics Community to a more inclusive ELIXIR Microbiome Community will enable it to encompass a broader range of biomes and link expertise across 'omics technologies. Furthermore, engaging with a large number of researchers will improve the efficiency and sustainability of bioinformatics infrastructure and resources for microbiome research (standards, data, tools, workflows, training), which will enable a deeper understanding of the function and taxonomic composition of the different microbial communities.

The ELIXIR study: evaluation of sexual dysfunction in 4557 depressed patients in France.

OBJECTIVES: This survey was conducted in order to determine the extent and nature of disorders of sexual function in depressed patients treated in the community in France. METHODS: Patients with DSM-IV major depressive episodes were included. The inclusion criteria stipulated that only patients with no antecedents of sexual dysfunction could be included. Information on sexual function was collected with a questionnaire which included physician observations as well as the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale. RESULTS: Overall, 4557 patients were included in the study. The prevalence of disorders of sexual function observed was 35% for spontaneously reported problems and 69% for problems identified by physician questioning. Impaired sexual function in depressed patients is also revealed by a high score on the Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (mean overall score of 21.4). Frequency of sexual dysfunction was somewhat higher in patients treated with antidepressants than in untreated patients (71% and 65% respectively). Treatment with tianeptine was associated with a lower incidence of sexual dysfunction than was treatment with tricyclic antidepressants or with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Although in 39% of cases, physicians managed the sexual problems encountered by changing the antidepressant treatment, the most frequently adopted approach (42% of cases) was to await spontaneous remission. Drug holidays or adjunctive therapy were very rarely proposed. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of sexual dysfunction in patients with major depression is high. Antidepressant drugs appear to aggravate such problems, with certain classes of drug better tolerated than others. Sexual dysfunction in depressed patients is often not optimally treated.

From the establishment of a national bioinformatics society to the development of a national bioinformatics infrastructure.

We describe the evolution of a bioinformatics national capacity from scattered professionals into a collaborative organisation, and advancements in the adoption of the bioinformatics infrastructure philosophy by the national community. The Romanian Society of Bioinformatics (RSBI), a national professional society, was founded in 2019 to accelerate the development of Romanian bioinformatics. Incrementally, RSBI expanded its role to include: i) developing a community and engaging the public and stakeholders, ii) a national training approach, including through increased interactions with European training resources, and iii) advocating national participation in European bioinformatics infrastructures. In a next step RSBI led the development of the national bioinformatics infrastructure, the Romanian Bioinformatics Cluster (CRB) with the mission to act as an ELIXIR National Node. In this paper we report both the successful projects in training, public engagement, and policy projects, as well as initiatives related to data federation that, while not successful, can serve as valuable learning experiences for future implementations. We explain CRB's structure and the role such an entity can play in the national bioinformatics infrastructure for data, tools, and training. Finally, we offer insights into the evolving role of the bioinformatics professional society and the synergies and interactions with the forthcoming National ELIXIR Node.

The solution was the problem.

There are increasing numbers of adults living in the community who require enteral tube feeding. While there is significant evidence of the importance of this treatment, there are side effects which can cause difficulties for patients, their carer tabers and health professionals. Gastrointestinal complications are the most common side effects with feed formula being cited as the main culprit, often without investigating other potential causes. Many patients requiring aggressive nutrition support also require concurrent drug therapy to manage underlying disease. Drugs are often given via tubes in liquid form. These elixirs often contain large quantities of sorbitol, which will increase the osmolar concentration. There is a lack of awareness from primary health-care professionals about the difficulties that can arise when giving medications to patients receiving enteral feeding which may affect patient care and the nutritional outcomes.

Elixir: a prevention program for women.

Since November 1984, the Elixir project has devoted its efforts exclusively to the problem of alcohol and drug (minor tranquillizer) consumption by women. From January 1985 to June 1987, this prevention project reached 2,693 women and 911 health intervenors. The following is a description of the implementation of the project, its key characteristics and the effects it seems to have had on the people involved.
