The dental services sector of the economy is a growth industry; however, many changes have occurred since the 1979-1980 recession. The population under the age of eighteen has continued to decrease, and the number of pedodontists has increased. Major changes are occurring in the incidence and prevalence of dental diseases.

The editor of a non-subscription publication for dentists explains the advantages of having a journal whose contents are driven by advertising revenue unrelated to products or services mentioned in the journal and free from political influence as well. The drive on the publication is reader interest rather than author or publisher philosophy, and surveys and other methods are used to stay close to the issues practicing dentists are interested in.
In the 1990s, the general economy, as well as the economics of dental practice, were favorable. Should there be an extended period of economic downturn, three factors could be cause for economic concern; the wide ranges in spending for dental services in different parts of the country, the reliance on out-of-pocket spending for dental care, and the minimal level of government spending for these services.
A review is provided of dental economics based on national dental expenditure data, ADA economic reports and IRS business receipt information. The favorable series of economic reports, together with continuing projected decreases in the dentist-to-population ratios points to a continuing favorable economic picture for pediatric dental practitioners.

A slowdown in per capita dental expenditures is projected through the year 2000. However, reduction in the "production" of new dentists will offset these economic developments and result in a continued favorable economic environment.
