Dentists and dental technicians as competing suppliers of complete dentures in Southwest Finland.

In Finland, not only dentists but also dental technicians with special training have the right to supply clients with complete dentures. The present study investigated how the demand for their services is distributed between these two professional groups, and what are the factors affecting the distribution. The material consisted of 220 randomly selected subjects who had lost all their teeth in one or both jaws. Of the full dentures worn, 50% had been made by a dentist and 41% by a dental technician, while in 10% one denture, either maxillary or mandibular, was made by a dentist and the other by a dental technician. 56% of the subjects said they would choose a dental technician the next time health center services become more general and patients are more able to get treatment by dentists at a reduced cost, it seems probable that the majority of the edentulous will again resort to the dentists. However, judging by the current attitudes, a considerable number of the edentulous will continue to resort directly to the dental technician for the supply of dentures.

The dental technician in Australia.

The training, employment and distribution of dental technicians in Australia is described. Since 1945 illegal practice by dental technicians has been widespread particularly among a group of technicians who operate one-man surgeries and operate illegally full time. Legislation has now been introduced in Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales to permit registered technicians to make dentures direct to the patient and similar legislation is imminent in South Australia. The hope is expressed that the trend away from a technician being employed on the premises by the dental practitioner may be reversed, and that with the increasing sophistication of dental treatment and the technician being treated much more as a full member of the dental team, his interest and job satisfaction can be significantly improved.

Role of the dental technician in professional education.

This survey has documented the current role of dental technicians in dental schools in the United States. This role is still rather minor, but it is significant. Some suggestions for improving the situation have been made. A further survey of this kind should be made again in 3-5 years, at which time a comparison with this survey may reveal a developing pattern and some better clues to the future.

The dental technician and the attitude of dentists towards his role in Japan.

Historically the development of the Japanese dental care delivery system necessitated the enaction of the Dental Laboratory Technique Law. The Health Insurance Scheme, at present, is not able to operate without the collaboration of dental laboratory technicians. This means that the dental technician may introduce a possible competitive inter-relationship with the dentist who relies on prosthetic dentistry as the major source of his income. It does not mean illegal practice by dental technicians which has so far been negligible. The occupation of the dental technician, therefore, would seem to be very stable. Results obtained during the International Collaborative Study of the Dental Manpower Systems, however, showed some psychological conflict amongst the responding dental technicians.
