An automated assay of anti-P1 allohemagglutinins has been carried out on 133 P2 subjects: 13 with acute hepatic distomiasis (Fascioliasis), 20 with hydatidosis and 100 healthy blood donors. Anti-P1 were detected in 100% of the distomatid sera, in 50% of the hydatid and in 29% of the healthy individuals. When compared to a reference serum test (anti-P1 standard), their concentration was found to be weak in healthy subjects, moderate in hydatidosis and exceptionally increased in acute distomiasis (up to 5-6 times the standard anti-P1 level). The 2-mercaptoethanol treatment showed that even the increased distomatid anti-P1 sera were of an IgM nature. The respective origin, synthesis and strength of these allohemagglutinins are discussed and the advantages of using distomatid IgM anti-P1 as human sera test are emphasized.
The hepatic distomiasis is a parasitic and cosmopolite affection caused by a trematode Fasciola hepatica. The clinical manifestation usually includes an invasion phase with toxi-infectious hepatitis and intermittent angiocholitis episodes during the chronic phase of the disease. Many authors insist for few years, on some revealing manifestations of the disease that are unusual in the classical forms, especially the neurological manifestations that are rare and of extreme polymorphism. Based on a 12 years old tunisian child case of distomiasis caused by F. hepatica associated with neurological manifestations and through the analysis of 25 literature cases, the symptomatological and physiopathological aspects of this clinical form that generally makes the physician perplex, are reviewed.
Pulmonary distomiasis due to Paragonimus westermani was discovered in a young 21-year-old patient from Thailand following several bouts of hemoptysis. The authors review the published literature and outline the principal characteristics of this affection, emphasizing the radiological appearances and the possible value of bronchial arteriography.
Concerning two cases of ascariasis and one case of distomiasis in the biliary ducts the authors describe the sonographic patterns leading to the ultrasonic diagnosis of those biliary parasites.--The "strip sign" characterizing ascaridiasis.--The "olympic ring gallbladder".
