Since Zollinger and Ellison described two cases of this disease in 1955 which would later recieve their names (ZED), more than 1,000 cases have been published in the world literature up to date. In our area around 28 cases have been reported in a period of 14 years (1964--1976). The author reviews this disease, evaluating and comparing results obtained in this small series, with regard to prevalence, clinical manifestations and histopathologic lesions, against those obtained in series of large scope. Mean age was 46 years, ranging from 18 to 63 years, and the male-female ratio was 7:5. Ulcers and diarrhea were present in 100 percent and in 35 percent of the cases, respectively. The incidence of AEM-1 was 25 percent. In 85 percent of the cases the existence of a gastrinoma was demostrated, being pancreatic in 78 percent and extrapancreatic in 7 percent. In 10 percent of the cases there was a diffuse hyperplasia of the islet cells, and in one case, there was hyperplasia of the G-cells of the antrum. These results are very similar to those obtained by different authors.

Bibliographia medica cechoslovaca, a comprehensive national medical bibliography, has played an outstanding role in providing information on Czech and Slovak literature since 1947. The automated system implemented in 1978 provides now access to this information in several ways including CD-ROM technology.

The planning, design and implementation stages of a computer-based approach to the indexing of the biomedical bibliography in Mexico are described; a proposal for an index to be set up at Mexico's National Health Information and Documentation Centre (CENIDS). Factors such as Mexico's biomedical information production; local information needs; and establishment of objectives/goals of the indexing system are described as relevant indicators to be considered at the planning stage. General computer and non-computer functions, as well as two possible alternatives to the design stage are proposed. A 'phase approach' implementation is also advised. Finally, several information management and organization factors are described as the benefits derived from this proposal; transference of national knowledge; current awareness services and international collaboration, among others.

OBJECTIVES: To establish reliable estimates of the proportion of books available in formats accessible to visually impaired people; to recommend a practical method of updating the estimates. METHODS: The project had two stages. Stage one estimated the overall availability of all categories of books. The British National Bibliography (BNB) for 1999-2003 was chosen as the sampling frame. A sample of 2069 titles over the 5 years was selected using a systematic sample design. These titles were then checked for availability against the catalogues of four major producer/suppliers of materials in accessible formats. The second stage involved checking the availability of books in six genres; about 400 titles for each genre were examined. RESULTS: Of the titles selected for the overall estimate, 92 (4.4%) were found to be available in one or more accessible formats. Availability of titles in accessible formats varied greatly between categories. Adult fiction had the highest number of available publications (26.3%), least represented were cookery (1.9%) and gardening (1.8%). CONCLUSIONS: This study provided baseline figures and a methodology for the Right to Read Alliance to monitor their progress in campaigning for more books to be accessible to visually impaired people.
OBJECTIVES: To report one case of collecting duct (Bellini) carcinoma and to review the national bibliography. To analyze the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic features of this malignant renal tumor. METHODS/RESULTS: A 36-year-old male presenting with monosymptomatic hematuria and clot retention was diagnosed of left renal mass suggestive of renal carcinoma. Radical nephrectomy with interaortocaval lymphadenectomy through an "L" abdominal incision (inverted Makuuchi) and postoperative radiotherapy were carried out. The pathologic report showed a collecting duct (Bellini) carcinoma. The patient died 34 months after surgery, having been treated with two courses of chemotherapy and palliative vertebral radiotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: The collecting duct (Bellini) carcinoma is an infrequent malignant renal tumor. It does not differ from the clear cell adenocarcinoma either clinically or epidemiologically. However, it presents its own embryological, pathologic, immunohistochemical, and cytogenetic characteristics. Radical nephrectomy is the treatment of choice. Prognosis is ominous because of the aggressive behaviour and diagnosis in advanced stages.
