Organochlorine pesticides, due to their persistence, accumulate in food chains and cause elevated contamination in human beings. These residues bioconcentrate in lipid-rich tissues according to the equilibrium pattern of internal transport and lipid tissue content. The analyses of maternal adipose tissue, maternal blood serum, umbilical blood serum, colostrum, and mature milk indicate circulation of these compounds through all compartments of the maternal body, including their crossover of the placental barrier. The greatest residue levels found correspond to DDTs, with highest levels determined in colostrum (5.71 mg/kg of DDT total), followed by adipose tissue with 5.66 mg/kg and in mature milk with 4.70 mg/kg. Among DDTs, pp'DDE is the most predominant compound. The paired analyses of organochlorine pesticide residue levels between mother blood serum and umbilical blood serum demonstrate significant correlation and their transfer from mother to fetus through the placenta. The paired analyses of adipose tissue and colostrum and mature milk contamination levels indicate a high degree of coherence, principally of DDT, in the body and lactation as a decontamination means.
Diamine oxidase (DAO) was purified from blood serum after intravenous heparin injection, from pregnancy blood serum and amniotic fluid. On DEAE-Sephadex, DAO from amniotic fluid as well as from pregnancy blood serum was separated in two active fractions with molecular weights of 245,000 and 485,000, respectively. Post-heparin blood serum contained only one active DAO fraction with a molecular weight of 185,000. The purified enzymes showed similar enzymatic properties.

The present experiments were carried out with the aim to determine G, A and M immunoglobulin concentration levels in the blood serum of parturients, umbilical blood of their neonates, and in the amniotic fluid in 17 women with prolonged pregnancies. The diagnosis of prolonged pregnancy was confirmed by the typical after term traits in infants. IgG and IgA were detected in all three environments and the presence of IgM was confirmed in all cases in the blood serum and in 76% of the tested samples of amniotic fluid. IgG concentration in the blood serum of mothers with prolonged pregnancy was lower than in physiological pregnancies. Despite this IgG level in the serum of umbilical blood of the neonates was normal in all cases. The values of IgA and IgM were noted to be normal both in the parturients' blood serum as well as in the umbilical blood. Examination of the amniotic fluid did not reveal significant differences in immunoglobulin levels related to the duration of full term pregnancy compared to prolonged pregnancy.
The present investigation is aimed at determination of G, A and M immunoglobulins concentration levels in the blood serum of parturients, umbilical blood of their neonates and in the amniotic fluid in 50 women with physiological pregnancy and delivery whose neonates were fully mature. In order to evaluate IgG, IgA and IgM concentration in the biological fluids, the method of inhibition of passive hemagglutination was applied. IgG and IgA were detected in all the three environments, while the presence of IgM was confirmed in all cases in the blood serum but only in 78% of the tested samples of the aminotic fluid. Mean values of IgG and IgM concentration both in the parturients' serum as well as in the umbilical blood of their neonates as compared with the values found in the amniotic fluid, revealed statistically significant differences. The statistically significant correlation noted between the values of IgG concentration in the parturients' serum and the umbilical blood of their neonates was not confirmed in the case of IgA and IgM.
Effect of simultaneous treatment with various doses of 6-methylthiouracil and thyroidectomy on content of carbohydrate-containing glycoproteins was studied in blood serum and plasmatic membranes of rat erythrocytes and leukocytes. Doses and schedule of the thyrostatics administration determined their effect on concentration of the glycoproteins studied. Correlation of various degree and significance was found between the alterations in content of individual carbohydrate-containing components, especially in membranes of erythrocytes and leukocytes. The data obtained enabled to elucidate the mechanisms of alterations in content of the glycoproteins studied in blood serum and plasmatic membranes of blood cells.

Ethanol concentrations in serum (SAC) and whole blood (BAC) were determined for 235 subjects by a headspace gas chromatographic method. The SAC:BAC ratios ranged between 1.04 and 1.26. The mean was 1.14, and the normal distribution had a standard deviation (SD) of 0.041. When a conversion (division) factor for SAC to BAC of 1.18 (mean + 1 SD) was used, 84% of estimated BACs were less than that measured; the remaining estimates differed by less than 7 mg/dL. An SAC greater than 100 mg/dL reliably indicated a BAC of more than 80 mg/dL. Ethanol concentrations in blood cells (CAC) were similarly determined for 167 of these subjects. The CAC:BAC ratios ranged from 0.66 to 1.00 and had a mean of 0.865 and a negatively skewed normal distribution with an SD of 0.065. When a conversion (division) factor for CAC to BAC of 0.93 (mean + 1 SD) was used, 89% of estimated BACs were less than that measured; the remaining estimates differed by less than 8 mg/dL. A CAC greater than 80 mg/dL reliably indicated a BAC of more than 80 mg/dL. The CAC is useful in forensic practice when either blood or serum is not available.
Two methods were optimized for the determination of zinc in samples of blood, serum, and ultrafiltrate fluid from patients with chronic renal impairment undergoing hemofiltration. In the first procedure, after acid digestion of the samples, Zn in blood and serum is determined by a system coupled to flow injection analysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The method is rapid, automated, simple, needs small amounts of sample, and has acceptable analytical characteristics. The analytical characteristics obtained were as follows: determination range of method, 0.05-2.0 ppm of Zn; precision as coefficient of variation (CV), 5.3%; recovery, 95-105%; and detection limit (DL), 0.02 ppm. The second method is optimized for ultrafiltrate fluid because the sensitivity of the first procedure is not suitable for the levels of Zn (ppb or ng/mL) in these samples. The technique chosen was atomic absorption spectroscopy with electrothermal atomization in a graphite furnace. The analytical characteristics obtained were as follows: determination range of method, 0.3-2.0 ppb Zn; CV, 5.7%; recovery, 93-107%; and DL, 0.12 ppb. The methods were used to determine zinc in samples of blood, serum, and ultrafiltrate fluid from 5 patients with chronic renal impairment undergoing hemofiltration to discover whether there were significant differences in the zinc contents of blood, serum, and ultrafiltrate fluid after the hemofiltration process. An analysis of variance of the experimental data obtained from a randomly selected group of 5 patients showed that zinc concentrations in the ultrafiltrate fluid, venous blood, and venous serum do not vary during hemofiltration (p < 0.05), whereas in arterial blood and serum, the time factor has a significant effect.
The 24-h storage of horse serum at 4 degrees C to which bacterial lipopolysaccharide (P) or sodium nucleinate (NN) was added, did not change the pyrogenic effect of these mixtures. Even after 2-h incubation at 37 degrees C changes could not be clearly detected. 24-h incubation at 37 degrees C leads to a clear, but only in case of NN, statistically significant reduction of pyrogenic effect. 24-h incubation of human heparin plasma at 37 degrees C, to which P or NN was added, in both cases resulted in statistically significant reductions of pyrogenic effect. Thus, when incubated with horse serum or human heparin plasma, the pyrogenic effect of NN is reduced in principle as well as that of P treated in the same way.
Aspartate transaminase activity (AST) was measured in the serum of children and adults suffering from generalized meningococcal infection. Activation of AST is only rarely detected in children, which is associated with higher protection from lipid peroxidation. The ratio between antioxidants and prooxidants was higher in children than in adults.
