[Activated coagulation time and the concentration of heparin in assessing the level of blood heparinization during operations using artificial blood circulation].

Blood heparinization was assessed, using two techniques (activated coagulation time--ACT and heparin concentration) in 31 patients during cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. It has been shown that ACT-technique, not always revealing heparin concentration, may serve as a criterion for blood heparinization adequacy during cardiopulmonary bypass, as in every case it reflects individual changes in anticoagulant blood activity.

An experimental study on drugs for improving blood circulation and removing blood stasis in treating mild chronic hepatic damage.

Large and small doses of drugs for improving blood circulation and removing blood stasis were used in model rats to treat mild chronic hepatic damage induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The results show that large dose of Dang Gui ([symbol: see text] Radix Angelicae Sinensis) and Dan Shen ([symbol: see text] Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae) (drugs for regulating blood flow) and small dose of Yu Jin ([symbol: see text] Radix Curcumae) and Niu Xi ([symbol: see text] Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae) (drugs for activating blood flow) can significantly elevate the activity of SOD (P < 0.05) and/or lower the T/K ratio, markedly reduce the MDA content (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01) and significantly decrease the activities of ALT and AST (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), demonstrating that these drugs are effective in combating oxygen free radicals (OFR) in chronic liver damage. On the contrary, large dose of Tu Bie Chong ([symbol: see text] Eupolyphaga seu Steleophaga) and E Zhu ([symbol: see text] Rhizoma Curcumae) (drugs for removing blood stasis) tend to increase the ALT and AST (P < 0.05) activities. The results suggest that the synergism of elevation of the SOD activity and reduction of T/K ratio contributes to the action of drugs for improving blood circulation and removing blood stasis in combating the liver damage induced by CCl4.

[Role of "qi" in reaching affected area using acupuncture in "promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis"].

In the present work, an experimental observation was carried out with the determination method of bioelectric impedance in 78 cases of chronic hepatitis, 58 cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, 45 of obstructive thromboendarteritis and 65 of coronary heart disease, who were diagnosed definitely and possessed the symptoms and signs of blood stasis and produced change in hemodynamics. Yanglingquan (G. B. 34) and Zhangmen (Liv.13) acupoints on right side were needled and four indices of liver blood circulation were determined for chronic hepatitis. Bilateral Kongzui (Lu.6) acupoints were needled and seven indices of lung blood circulation were detected for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Acupoint along the pathway of channel were needled and six indices of blood circulation in the extremities were examined for obstructive thromboendarteritis. Bilateral Neiguan (P.6) acupoints were needled and four indices of the cardiovascular function were detected for coronary heart disease. Results showed 95 cases of the above four diseases having Qi reaching to affected area. 84 cases had propagated sensation along the channel. 67 cases had local sensation. Experimental results indicated that Qi reaching affected area produced obvious effects of dredging the meridian passage, and promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis.

[Effects of L yaojiu of invigorating blood circulation and eliminating blood stasis in old rats].

L Yaojiu was investigated for its effects of invigorating blood circulation and eliminating blood stasis using old rats (aged over ten months) as the model of blood stasis. Three different dosages of L Yao Jiu (14.3, 28.5, 57.0 mg crude drugs/kg) had been administrated orally per day to rats for 12 consecutive days. The changes of the mesenteric microcirculation and the hemorrheology were observed. The content of serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and the activities of serum monoamine oxidase (MAO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined. The results showed L Yao Jiu could accelerate the blood streams, dilate the capillaries and inhibit erythrocyte aggregations. It also reduced blood viscosity, inhibited platelet aggregations and improved the function of erythrocytes. On the other hand, the activities of total-SOD and Cu-SOD were increased and the content of MDA was decreased. These results suggests that L Yao Jiu could invigorate blood circulation and eliminate blood stasis in old rats.

Utilizing granulocyte colony-stimulating factor to enhance vascular graft endothelialization from circulating blood cells.

Cells in the blood circulating through a vascular graft can contribute to endothelialization of its flow surface. We hypothesized that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) could enhance this process by increasing circulating bone marrow progenitor cells. Ten dogs received composite grafts that were shielded from any source of endothelialization other than the circulating blood. On the seventh postoperative day and for 7 days thereafter, five dogs were injected subcutaneously with 10 mg/kg/day of human G-CSF. The additional five dogs, used as controls, received no G-CSF. Grafts were retrieved at 4 weeks. All dogs recovered promptly postoperatively. White cell counts in G-CSF dogs increased by an average of 9.5-fold at the end of treatment, and had returned to normal before retrieval. All grafts remained patent. G-CSF grafts had significantly higher endothelialization than the controls (82.2 +/- 9.2% vs. 23.7 +/- 4.4%, p = 0.0004), with extensive flow surface neointima, covered with a single layer of endothelium verified by FVIII/vWF and CD34 staining. Control grafts had virtually no neointima and were covered with a thin layer of fibrin coagulum. Significantly more endothelial-lined microvessels were also found in the G-CSF grafts than in the controls. Dogs treated with G-CSF have increased endothelialization of synthetic vascular grafts due to increased circulating bone marrow progenitor cells.
