Ballistocardiography: past, present and future.

In this paper, an analysis is given of the present state of ballistocardiography. It is concluded that several aspects of the method have to be improved before successful application in medicine can follow. These aspects are, for example, (a) physiological backgrounds of the method, and (b) signal analysis of the ballistocardiogram. Recent developments on these items are discussed and some preliminary results are given. Research on ballistocardiography is worthwhile to be continuing, since the method offers good perspectives for application in preventive medicine (early detection of coronary heart disease) and in clinical medicine.

Non-invasive methods for evaluating the importance of heart rate and atrial activity in cardiac pacing. Results of ballistocardiography and digital plethysmography studies in six patients with heart block.

Ultralow frequency ballistocardiography (UFB) and digital pulse plethysmography (DPP) were performed in six patients with an external artificial pacemaker system. UFB was used mainly to evaluate the force of contraction of the left ventricle (IJ amplitude) and DPP for evaluating relative changes in the peripheral pulse volume. Four patients were studied at 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 beats/min. There was a significant decrease (p less than 0.001) in LJ and pulse amplitudes when the heart rate increased from 40 to 100 beats/min. A positive correlation between relative IJ and pulse amplitude was observed in all cases studied. In beat-to-beat analysis it was found that the importance of the PR interval for the IJ and pulse amplitudes varied between patients. It is concluded that both UFB and DPP may be of value in clinical practice for evaluating hemodynamics in patients with slow spontaneous heart rate. The methods may be of help in selecting the most effective type of pacemaker for the individual patient.

Ballistocardiography in sanatorial and health resort rehabilitation of patients after myocardial infarction.

A sanatorial and health resort rehabilitation was carried out in patients after myocardial infarction. The rehabilitation program included exercise therapy and carbonic acid baths. The ballistocardiographic studies conducted with a diagnostic purpose indicate that carbonic acid balneotherapy may be used in patients after the third month following the onset of myocardial infarction. Clinico-physiological investigations indicate that ballistocardiography may serve to control the effectiveness of sanatorial and health resort rehabilitation and to determine the mechanism of action of the physical factors involved.

[Contractile function of the heart during weightlessness according to the results of 3-dimensional ballistocardiography].

In the joint Soviet-Indian space flight the method of spatial ballistocardiography was used to investigate the cardiac function in flight. The piezoelectric transducer was placed between the scapulae and its orientation was varied relative to the three axes of the body. Measurements were taken twice before, twice during and twice after flight. Ballistocardiograms were analyzed in terms of their amplitude, time and spectral parameters. It was found that in microgravity the energy of cardiac contractions developed spatial redistribution. It was also demonstrated that the cardiovascular function showed individual variability.
