The effect of air ionization on the air-borne transmission of experimental Newcastle disease virus infections in chickens.

The effect of artificial air-ionization on air-borne transmission of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) infection in chickens was studied in an isolated system consisting of two side-by-side cages with solid walls and a wire-gauze roof. During a 3-week observation period more than 90% of the uninoculated indicator chickens, housed in one of the cages, contracted the virus shed to the air by the NDV-inoculated, diseased birds in the neighbouring cage. This air-borne transmission of NDV was completely prevented by increasing the ion concentration in the test room by a constant negative corona discharge above the wire-gauze roof. On the other hand, spreading of the infection within a group of chickens housed in a single cage was not affected by air ionization. These and other results suggest that artificial air-ionization may protect animals from certain air-borne infections by interfering with microbial aerosol formation and/or by facilitating their decay.

Air Ionization

[Effect of air ionization with a constant flow of air ions on broilers].

Studies were carried out to establish the effect of a regime of invariable air ionization on chicken broilers at a constant rate of air ions (10000-15000 per cm3). It was found that birds raised under such conditions showed lower mortality and used lower amount of feed per kilogram of body weight. With regard to weight gain, however, the results were contradictory, which spoke of the fact that the tested regime of air ionization was imperfect.

Air Ionization

Effect of air ionization on heart rate and perceived exertion during a bicycle exercise test. A double-blind cross-over study.

The influence of ionization of air on heart rate (HR) and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) during bicycle exercise was studied in nine healthy medical students selected according to a randomized schedule from the class of 90 students. The exercise tests were performed both under negative and positive ionization. The study was made with a double-blind, cross-over design. The body surface exposed to ionic current was made large by reducing the clothing of the subject. A significant overall tendency to lower HR and RPE values under negative ionization was observed (p less than 0.01, sign tests). The RPE values were significantly lower (p less than 0.01, paired t-test and the Wilcoxon test) under negative than under positive ionization at the maximal work load level but not at other relative load levels. However, when separately tested at each relative load level HR values did not differ significantly in negative and positive ionization. The results of this pilot study indicate that ionic composition of the air can modify the RPE and possibly also HR during exercise; negative air ionization seems to be beneficial compared with positive ionization. The mechanisms involved are obscure, but we suggest that negative ionization of air may increase oxidative metabolism through generation of a superoxide radical (O2-) that is reduced to H2O2 by superoxide dismutases.

[Biochemical indices of the healthy human being in a hermetic chamber with periodically ionized air].

The content of 11-hydroxycorticosteroids, triglycerides and enzyme activity in blood as well as the content of 17-ketosteroids in urine of normal men kept for 16 days in an enclosure ventilated for 24--60 hours with bipolar ionized air (averaged unipolarity factor 1.58, concentration of positive ions 26--35 thous. cm-(3)) were measured. On DD 7--9 concentrations of 11-HOCS, triglycerides and 17-KS increased. This can be attributed to an activation of the hypophyseal-adrenal system in response to the enclosure effect. Further rapid return of the parameters to the normal may be associated with the cumulative effect of air ionization. This ionization at the doses used did not influence activities of creatine phosphokinase, aspartate aminotransferase and alphahydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase.

[Microclimatic and air ionization problems in electronic telecommunication centers].

The electronic automatic telegraph stations are up-to-date telecommunicative equipment. There is no information in literature for hygiene characteristic of the working conditions in this type of modern industrial activity. The study shows, that the basic hygiene problems are related to the microclimate and ionization of the air of the working premises. The climatic installation creates extremely static microclimate during all the periods of the year and systematic aero-ionic insufficiency of the air. Possibilities for regulating the climatic installation regime are discussed in view of establishing physiologically sound and well-grounded microclimate and aero-ionic conditions.

Air Ionization

[Microorganisms distribution in the aerosol of a manned sealed cabin and the effect of artificial air ionization on this process].

In a manned enclosure the distribution of bacterial aerosol with respect to the size of particles is bimodal. Artificial bipolar ionization of the air may decrease the content of relatively large particles of bacterial aerosol, leaving particles with 2.0-0.6/micrometer in diameter in predominance. These properties of the bacterial aerosol structure may be of importance in the prophylaxis of aerogenic infections of cosmonauts.

Aerosols

[Effect of artificial air ionization on broilers].

Tested was the artificial ionization of the air in climatic chambers in attempts to maintain the abiotic ecologic factors within the parameters required by the industrial technology of raising. The feeding and raising of birds were carried in accordance with the provisions of the Bulgarian State Standard requirements. The experiments were carried out with day-old chick broilers divided into two equated groups. All parameters of the production milieu in which the groups were kept were unified with the exception of the ionization of air. The latter was effected following the pattern of a special programme worked out by the authors' team, providing for various exposures and concentrations of the ions in dependence on the age of birds. The investigation of the abiotic and biotic factors acting in the two chambers has revealed a reliable drop of the microbial contamination of the air under the effect of artificial ionization. It has been found that air ionization applied according to the tested programme stimulates the life processes in the body of broilers as evidenced by the anabolic processes with proteins, the higher vitamin A and E level in the liver, and the activation of haemopoiesis. As the result of the reduced microbial contamination of the air and the biologic action of the air ions on the body of the birds in the test group higher weight was obtained (by 19 g) as against the controls at a lower feed intake per unit of gain, with higher indices of the poultry meat. The chemical investigation of such meat of the test group birds has revealed higher protein and essential amino acid content.

Geophysical variables and behavior: XXXVIII. Effects of ionized air on the performance of a vigilance task.

The effects of positively or negatively ionized air on the performance of a visual vigilance task were investigated. The ion level was 100,000 ions/cm3, +/- 10,000. Also investigated were the effects of task-induced stress and nonstress. 40 male college students were required to press a hand-held switch as soon as they detected a signal on a simulated cathode-ray display. Each subject monitored the display continuously for 3 hr. in a room specially equipped for ion exposure and for control of light and noise. All subjects received continuous identical false feedback about their performance. Half of the subjects (the stress group) were told that they would receive an electric shock when their performance fell below an acceptable level. The false feedback was programmed so subjects in this group believed that they were in danger of receiving a shock, but none were actually administered. Analysis indicated that the percentage of signals detected was higher in the presence of negatively ionized air than in the presence of positively ionized air. Also performance-contingent stress resulted in better performance than nonstress.

Air Ionization

[Ionized air respiratory rehabilitation technics].

The use of negative charge ionized air as a technique of respiratory rehabilitation has been examined. After some introductory remarks on the biological action of this climatic factor, literature references are reviewed and personal experience reported. The importance of negative ionization of air is stressed, especially in acute and chronic inflammatory forms of the airways.

Attempts at aerosol control in a turkey rearing confinement with negative air ionization.

Aerosol control is a significant problem in agriculture and industry. Two separate studies were conducted to determine the effectiveness of a "negative air ionization" system in aerosol control. The first study was conducted with a turkey "brooder" barn and a control for a six-week period. The second study was conducted with a turkey "grow-out" barn and a control for a twelve-week period. Sampling parameters for both studies included environmental aerosol sampling, ion imbalance measurements, relative humidity, temperature and barometric pressure measurements and daily turkey mortality. Study two also included post study bird weights. Results of sampling parameters were consistent between study one and study two. No significant difference was found between test and control total average aerosol concentration for both studies. Ion imbalance measurements served to indicate that test environments were negatively ionized while control environments experienced normal environmental conditions. Meteorological parameters did not significantly affect aerosol concentrations. Normal variations in bird mortality were observed in the first study, but death rates increased with ionization in the latter. Overall, it was determined that the "negative air ionization" could not be considered as an effective means of aerosol control in turkey rearing confinements.

[Physiotherapeutic apparatus as a source of air ionization in the rooms].

The extent of the air ionization in rooms accomodating physiotherapeutic apparatus is assessed. Subject to determination are main characteristics of ionization, such as: the unipolarity coefficient, the ionic air pollution factor, the life time of ions. Formulas for calculating mean concentration of ions and of the ionization energy liberation are cited. Recommendations for reducing the ions concentration are given.

Geophysical variables and behavior: V. Human performance in ionized air.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the claim that human performance may be enhanced by exposure to artificially high concentrations of negative air ions. 16 subjects, only half of whom were informed of the ion level in each session, performed reasoning, psychomotor, and memory-search tasks. Despite adequate control of confounding variables, no clear evidence was obtained in support of the view that negative ions in the air influence performance.
