Regulatory effect of cytokine production in asthma patients by SOOJI CHIM (Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy).

Acupuncture has become quite familiar to many Koreans not only for pain, but also for many other health problems, both in acute and chronic conditions. Actually, acupuncture is a therapeutic technique that is part of a larger system of traditional oriental medicine. There are several styles of acupuncture. We investigated the regulatory effects of cytokine production in peripheral blood of asthma patients (AP) by SOOJI CHIM (Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy, KHT). Clinical signs of asthma disappeared markedly by KHT. The mean interleukin (IL)-2 and IL-6 plasma levels were lower in the AP group than in the normal group, whereas the mean interferon (IFN)-gamma, IL-4, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha levels were higher in the AP group. Plasma IFN-gamma and IL-2 levels derived from T helper (Th)1 cells and IL-4 levels derived from Th2 cells were elevated in the AP group by KHT. Especially, plasma IL-6 levels derived from Th2 cells were elevated significantly in the AP group by KHT. Reduced plasma levels of TNF-alpha were observed in the AP group by KHT. Plasma IgE levels were also measured but there were no significant differences from each other. During the KHT, there were no other adverse effects. These results indicate that KHT has a good asthma treatment effect, and that its action may be due to the regulation of cytokine production.

Pseudoaneurysm of the abdominal aorta caused by acupuncture therapy.

Acupuncture is a major treatment modality used in Oriental medicine to control chronic pain. However, several complications have been reported, including spinal cord injury, pneumothorax, and subcutaneous pseudoaneurysm, according to the puncture sites. We report the case of a pseudoaneurysm of the abdominal aorta caused by acupuncture.

[New findings in acupuncture therapy].

Acupuncture is an ancient method of healing coming from the Chinese traditional medicine. In Western medical science it is accepted and proven method of healing based on neurophysiological, neurobiochemical and neuroendocrinological research. Acupuncture as a method of healing has been accepted also by the World Health Organisation with strongly defined indications and contraindications. Indications for acupuncture included: acute and chronic pain syndrome, allergic disorders, addiction, psychosomatic and psychosexual illness and acupuncture analgesia/anaesthesia. It is very important that there are no harms of acupuncture treatment, although mild side effects are possible. Acupuncture is based on characteristics of meridian points, afferent nerve information evoked by acupuncture stimulation, inhibitory mechanisms in the central nervous system, endogenous antinociceptive substances concerned with acupuncture analgesia and descending mechanisms of antinociceptive control.

Chronic respiratory conditions and acupuncture therapy.

Acupuncture effectively enhances the treatment of chronic allergic bronchitis and asthma in the cat and dog. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, chronic respiratory conditions can arise from lung, spleen/pancreas, liver or kidney deficiencies. Proper diagnosis is made from patient history, as well as examination of tongue and pulse. Acupuncture points are chosen according to involved energy pathways (meridians) and classical acupuncture combinations. In most cases, medication can be reduced as the acupuncture takes effect.

Observation of curative effect of acupuncture therapy plus scalp acupuncture for restoring consciousness and inducing resuscitation in 80 cases of acute apoplexy.

During our 4-year work in The Republic of Yemen, the authors used acupuncture therapy to restore consciousness and induce resuscitation plus scalp acupuncture in 80 cases of acute apoplexy, with 63 cases cured, accounting for 78.75%. This therapy is obviously superior to the traditional principle of point selection in acupuncture used in 25 cases as to curative effect, treatment course and other aspects. There is an obvious statistical difference (P < 0.005).

Clinical management of needle-phobia patients requiring acupuncture therapy.

Both acupuncture and hypnosis have their distinct applications in the health profession, but combining acupuncture therapy with hypnosis has rarely been done for the purpose of therapeutic treatment, perhaps because few clinicians have proper training in both disciplines. For needle phobic patients, acupuncture treatment can be a dreadful experience, as multiple needles are usually used. It is stressful for both clinicians and patients when the patients are put in an extremely apprehensive state. Our research for combining both acupuncture and hypnosis has revealed that synergy does exist in both, and that hypnosis does augment the effect of acupuncture, resulting in better treatment outcomes. Since many acupuncture patients who are needle phobic do not return for further treatment even though acupuncture has rendered good therapeutic results for them, stress reduction with hypnosis is, therefore, a welcome complimentary adjunct that would enable them to return for further needed acupuncture treatment if and when the factor of fear of the needle is removed.

Effects of acupuncture therapy on insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture therapy, commonly used in clinical practice in oriental cultures, has the potential to produce a positive effect with patients experiencing insomnia. AIM: The purposes of this systematic review were: (1) to assess the trends across intervention studies using acupuncture for insomnia from 1975 to 2002, (2) to examine dependent variables, and (3) to evaluate the effects of acupuncture therapy on insomnia in older people. METHOD: Data were collected from November 2001 to January 2003. A wide range of electronic databases was searched using the keywords 'insomnia', 'acupuncture' and 'experimental design'. Papers were included if they were published in the English language between 1975 and 2002 and described an experimental study using acupuncture therapy to treat insomnia. Eleven reports met these criteria. FINDINGS: Most of the studies had been conducted since 1990. The findings showed that the first author was usually a Chinese medical doctor (n = 9) employed in a traditional department of medicine. Most of the papers were published in two journals: International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture and Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Data were limited because of the small number of studies available. Half the studies had small samples (50 subjects or fewer), which were composed mainly of older women who had a variable duration of insomnia from 3 days to 34 years. The main method used to assess outcomes was questionnaire. All the studies reported statistically significant positive results. CONCLUSION: The results of this review suggest that acupuncture may be an effective intervention for the relief of insomnia. Further research, using a randomized clinical trial design, are necessary to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture. More work is also needed to promote the long-term therapeutic effects of acupuncture and to compare it with other therapies for insomnia.

Randomised double-blind trial on the immediate effects of naloxone on classical Chinese acupuncture therapy for chronic pain.

The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that acupuncture therapy and acupuncture analgesia are both endorphin mediated. Thirty consecutive patients, all with pain at the time of treatment, were chosen. Classical acupuncture was used on seventeen patients; ear acupuncture was combined with classical Chinese acupuncture on eight patients, and ear acupuncture alone was used in five cases. No electrical stimulation of any sort was used. Pain was assessed by the patients on a visual scale of 0 to 100 before and after acupuncture therapy. Immediately following the post-acupuncture pain assessment, the patient was injected intravenously with a 1 ml. injection of 400 micrograms of Naloxone or a 1 ml. injection of 0.9% Sodium Chloride on a randomised double-blind basis. The effect on pain relief was noted immediately and after thirty minutes. No significant change in pain relief already obtained was noted after Naloxone in any patient. This does not support the hypothesis that acupuncture therapy is mediated by endorphin.

Acupuncture therapy in acute abdomen.

Acupuncture as a therapeutic measure for abdominal pain was early recorded in Huangdi Neijing ("Yellow Emperor's Canon of Medicine"). Fruitful experiences have been accumulated in the practice of the long historical years. Nowadays acupuncture therapy has become one of the main therapeutic methods in surgical acute abdomen and is widely used clinically.

Acupuncture therapy for tennis elbow.

Acupuncture therapy for patients suffering from tennis elbow has shown itself to be an excellent alternative to steroid injections. Twenty-one out of 34 patients who were treated with acupuncture became much better--completely free of pain. Many of them had previously been given one or more steroid injections without improvement. In a control group of 26 patients who received only steroid injections, 8 patients reported a corresponding improvement. The ancient Chinese technique adapted to Western conditions has, in the above cases, neither caused any side effects nor worsened the condition of any patient, and is well worth trying as therapy for this disabling complaint.

[Quality assurance in acupuncture therapy].

Quality assurance for acupuncture therapy requires a good basic and on-going training in both conventional western medicine as well as in the theory and practice of acupuncture, the ability to synthesize the patient's objective findings and subjective feelings, and honesty with the patient and towards oneself. Thus, based on the continuous critical evaluation of the objective and subjective parameters, the question of acupunture as the optimal form of therapy for this specific case is honestly answered and one has the courage to admit failures. With regard to the theory, surveys of the acupuncture literature show that a considerable improvement in quality and honesty is necessary. There is a lack of standardised experimental methods (e.g. 28 different placebos in 28 different studies!). Especially German acupuncture journals have a disturbed relation to failures. To hide or deny failures is of no benefit neither to acupuncture, science to the relationship between the physician and the patient since the practitioner must be able to rely on the information in the literature. Furthermore, one should be open minded to alternative methods even if this means to refer a patient to a colleague.

Managing acute withdrawal syndrome on patients with heroin and morphine addiction by acupuncture therapy.

Though there are articles and case reports about using acupuncture to detoxify and to break the narcotic addiction, few articles describe in the West about using acupuncture therapy to treat the emergence of acute withdrawal symptom due to heroin, opium, or morphine. Most often the method of treatment are using the methadone or benzodiazepine and phenoziazine drugs this article describes many years of clinical experience with non-drug approach to treat the acute withdrawal symptoms with acupuncture therapy. Unlike the drug approach, which usually has side effects, there is no adverse effect with acupuncture therapy.

[The effects of hand-acupuncture therapy on intermittent abdominal pain in children].

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of hand acupuncture therapy on intermittent abdominal pain in children. METHOD: A quasi experimental pre-test and post (1,2)-test design was used. Data was collected from May, 2002 to February, 2003. Forty children were assigned to the experimental (20) or control group (20). The experimental group received Hand-Acupuncture therapy on the meridian point; A8, A9, A10, A11, A12, E22, E45 for 20 minutes, while the control group rested on the bed. Data was analyzed using the SAS program with Fisher's Exact chi (2) test, repeated measured ANOVA, and ANCOVA. RESULT: In the experimental group, pain intensity (f=63.26, p=0.00), A12(A)(F=60.40, p=0.00), and medication requirement (chi (2)=32.63, p=0.00) were significantly lower than that of the control group. CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that hand acupuncture therapy is effective for reduction of intermittent abdominal pain. Therefore, hand acupuncture therapy can be considered an independent nursing intervention for reducing intermittent abdominal pain.

Transverse myelopathy after acupuncture therapy: a case report.

Acute transverse myelopathy (ATM) due to acupuncture therapy is a rare neurologic condition. Diagnostic criteria for ATM consisted of acute onset of symmetrical motor, sensory dysfunction and may be associated with sphincter dysfunction with respect to the level of the spinal cord injury. In this report, the mechanism of occurrence of meylopathy and progressive symptoms which appeared after acupuncture therapy is discussed.
