Pathologic childhood aerophagy: an under-diagnosed entity.

Three children with pathologic childhood aerophagy are described. This entity is characterized by progressive abdominal distension during the day, non-distended abdomen in the morning, and visible air swallowing. The condition is usually self-limited, and treatment is symptomatic and by reassurance. Early recognition and diagnosis of this condition might help avoid unnecessary and expensive diagnostic investigations.

The problem of aerophagy. Postoperative gastric dilatation as a remote complication of total laryngectomy.

A case of acute gastric dilatation due to massive aerophagy in a patient who had previously had a laryngectomy is reported. Excitement during regional analgesia was responsible. The pathophysiology of this mechanism is discussed and suggestions are made about its prevention.

[Early infantile autism and excessive aerophagy with symptomatic megacolon and ileus in a case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome].

A case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is reported, which was associated with mental retardation and early infantile autism. The patient died at the age of 19 by ectasy of the stomach as the result of extreme aerophagy causing a megacolon and by compression so finally resulting in a mechanical ileus. Investigation of the cerebellum revealed a significant rarefication and diminuation of the Purkinjè cells as well as the cells of the stratum granulare in the lobuli VI and VII, obviously due to a genetically determined malformation.
