The authors attempt to extend Thelot's analysis of social mobility in France between 1953 and 1970. In particular, they examine "whether observed changes in mobility rates are entirely attributable to 'structural' influences. [They conclude] that while (as Thelot has suggested) the evolution of the occupational structure has been of major importance in altering the amount and pattern of mobility, changes of a systematic kind are none the less still evident when mobility is assessed independently of all structural effects." Data are from two surveys conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (SUMMARY IN ENG, GER, RUS,)

"The demographic regime that historically characterizes any given society constitutes a complex whole in which several elements interact. In relation to marriages, we have been able to demonstrate that, for the City of Quebec during the French regime, the age of first marriages reflects a specific division of tasks according to sex within the family. At the same time, it is a reflection of the differences that exist in the possibilities for getting established and the requirements of rank among the various professional groups. Moreover, the study of matrimonial ties demonstrates the degree of professional endogamy, which is much stronger within the upper group (officers and merchants)." (SUMMARY IN ENG AND SPA)
Changes in the industrial structure of Naples, Italy, between 1971 and 1981 are examined using census data. The first part analyzes demographic shifts in the city's population. "In the closing years of that period a decline in population growth was observed and, over its last decade, there was also a change in its structure in that there was an increase in the labour force due to the huge number of young people who entered the labour market."
"This article begins with a brief overview of the [U.S.] Census Bureau's preparations for the future, then discusses the demographic and social changes that are affecting the national labor force, from which the Census Bureau hires its workers. The final section considers how the bureau and its mission are affected by these changes."
The author constructs an empirical model to analyze differences in fertility and female labor force participation rates among less- and more-developed countries. "In its theoretical section, the article will emphasize SETF [socioeconomic theories of fertility] as a suitable foundation for demand-oriented population policies based on promotion of socio-economic equity. After a brief review of some major propositions of SETF...a formal model of household behaviour will be developed....Specific attention will be paid to patterns of income distribution...as a major aspect of socio-economic equity."
"This article investigates the levels, trends and differentials in infant and child mortality in West Sumatra [Indonesia]. The results of this study, based on the 1971, 1980 Population Censuses and the 1985 Intercensal Population Survey confirm a trend toward lower infant and child mortality in West Sumatra over the last two decades. The estimates also show that there are considerable urban-rural differentials in childhood mortality. In general, babies born in urban areas have a lower mortality rate than those born in rural areas. The study also shows that education, age at first marriage, occupation, and literacy level of the mother have significant effect on the child mortality differentials." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

"In recent years, poverty has become a serious issue in the socioeconomic development of China. One of the most important features of poverty is 'poor population quality', a factor that also causes poverty. Human resources development (HRD) strategies have been used as a weapon against poverty in many developing countries; some have proven to be quite effective. This article, which researches the relationship between HRD indicators and poverty status, finds that enhancement of education levels, improvement of health status, the gaining of skills and experience, increasing time away from home and choosing suitable occupations, all can contribute greatly to the reduction and alleviation of poverty."
"The main aim of this article is to examine the application of [the Gompertz-Makeham mathematical function] in detail, and more specifically, its mathematical formulation and development. Another objective is to test an iterative method for obtaining parameters, by which one may obtain an optimal function best describing the behavior of a population in the face of demographic phenomena. This study was conducted with [Mexican data on] population growth and...structures by age of fertility and the labor force." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
