Phonon self-energies and phase transitions in a prototype discotic liquid crystal

Specific Raman active vibrations in the discotic liquid crystal nematogen hexakis(6-hexyloxy)triphenylene are shown to be sensitive to either the isotropic<-->columnar or the columnar<-->solid phase transitions. Changes in frequency and/or intensity of vibrations with specific symmetries demonstrate that the method can be used not only to monitor the phase transitions themselves with a microscopic and noninvasive optical technique, but also to gain physical information on the origin of the molecular interactions that produce them.

Temperature and pressure dependence of the alpha relaxation and configurational entropy of a prototype glass former.

The alpha relaxation process of the fragile glass former salol is investigated in the T-P domain by means of photon correlation spectroscopy. We find that a time-pressure superposition principle is obeyed for the relaxation function in addition to the time-temperature superposition. The behavior of the relaxation time is studied by using an extended version of the Adam-Gibbs model including the pressure dependence. The excellent conformity of the equation describing the bidimensional surface tau(T,P) to the experimental data provides a positive check for this model, here verified on photon correlation measurements. The same model gives a rationale of the phenomenological expressions recently introduced to describe the changes in the slow dynamics induced by varying both temperature and pressure. These findings suggest that the reduction of configurational entropy actually guides the liquid toward the glass transition.

Symmetry breaking and coarsening of clusters in a prototypical driven granular gas.

Granular hydrodynamics predicts symmetry-breaking instability in a two-dimensional ensemble of nearly elastically colliding smooth hard disks driven, at zero gravity, by a rapidly vibrating sidewall. Supercritical and subcritical symmetry-breaking bifurcations of the stripe state are identified, and the supercritical bifurcation curve is computed. The cluster dynamics proceed as a coarsening process mediated by the gas phase. Well above the bifurcation point the final steady state, selected by coarsening, represents a single strongly localized densely packed "droplet."

Where the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann cell model fails: the planar case as a prototype study.

The linearized Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) approximation is investigated for the classical problem of two infinite, uniformly charged planes in electrochemical equilibrium with an infinite monovalent salt reservoir. At the nonlinear level, we obtain an explicit expression of the associated electrostatic contribution to the semi-grand-canonical potential. The linearized osmotic-pressure difference between the interplane region and the salt reservoir becomes negative in the low-temperature, large-separation, or high-surface charge limits, in disagreement with the exact (at mean-field level) nonlinear PB solution. We show that these artifacts--although thermodynamically consistent with quadratic expansions of the nonlinear functional--can be traced back to the nonfulfillment of the underlying assumptions of the linearization. Explicit comparison between the analytical expressions of the exact nonlinear solution and the corresponding linearized equations allows us to show that the linearized results are asymptotically exact in the weak-coupling and counterionic ideal-gas limits, but always fail otherwise, predicting negative osmotic-pressure differences. By taking appropriate limits of the full nonlinear PB solution, we provide asymptotic expressions for the semi-grand-canonical potential and the osmotic-pressure difference that involve only elementary functions, which cover the complementary region where the linearized theory breaks down.

Li2VO(Si,Ge)O4, a prototype of a two-dimensional frustrated quantum heisenberg antiferromagnet

NMR and magnetization measurements in Li2VOSiO4 and Li2VOGeO4 are reported. The analysis of the susceptibility shows that both compounds are two-dimensional S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice with a sizable frustration induced by the competition between the superexchange couplings J1 along the sides of the square and J2 along the diagonal. Li2VOSiO4 undergoes a low-temperature phase transition to a collinear order, as theoretically predicted for J2/J1>0.5. Just above the magnetic transition the degeneracy between the two collinear ground states is lifted by the onset of a structural distortion.

Momentum-resolved charge excitations in a prototype one-dimensional mott insulator.

We report momentum-resolved charge excitations in a one-dimensional (1D) Mott insulator studied using high resolution inelastic x-ray scattering over the entire Brillouin zone for the first time. Excitations at the insulating gap edge are found to be highly dispersive (momentum dependent) compared to excitations observed in two-dimensional Mott insulators. The observed dispersion in 1D cuprates ( SrCuO2 and Sr2CuO3) is consistent with charge excitations involving holons which is unique to spin-1/2 quantum chain systems. These results point to the potential utility of momentum-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering in providing valuable information about electronic structure of strongly correlated insulators.
