Estimation of the production, consumption, and atmospheric emissions of pentabrominated diphenyl ether in Europe between 1970 and 2000.

A European consumption and atmospheric emissions inventory for pentabrominated diphenyl ethers (PeBDEs) is derived for the period 1970-2000. This time frame has seen a rise in the widespread usage of PeBDE, followed by more recent restrictions/bans. It is estimated that a total of 3000-5000 t of PeBDEs was produced in Europe during this period, with a further 9000-10,000 t imported in finished articles. The main uses for PeBDE are to flame retard consumer products as well as in packaging and solid elastomers. Their major stocks are predicted to be in polyurethane (flexible) foams with up to 30% in cars; more than 10% in furniture foam; and the rest in textiles, building material, packaging, and solid applications. Release of PeBDEs from treated products into environmental media are estimated with a focus on atmospheric inputs via volatilization from their use in cars, upholstered furniture, textiles, television sets, personal computers, and other recycled material. Different emission factors are used to derive different emission scenarios. A peak in atmospheric emissions of between 22 and 31 t of BDE-47 is estimated to have occurred around 1997, with a decline of approximately 20% in 2000. Comparisons with long-term environmental monitoring data revealed that the time trends of human blood and milk concentrations follow similar patterns to the generated emissions, while sediment core levels increase more slowly, probably because they respond to a mix of atmospheric and catchment inputs. The emissions data derived here can be used in a spatially and temporally resolved form as input data for multi-media environmental fate modeling.

Hot-drawing of single and multiwall carbon nanotube fibers for high toughness and alignment.

We report a new hot-drawing process for treating wet-spun composite fibers made of single- and multiwall carbon nanotubes and poly(vinyl alcohol). As shown in previous reports, untreated composite nanotube fibers exhibit a very large strain-to-failure, and their toughness, which is the energy needed to break the fibers, exceeds that of any other known materials. However, untreated composite nanotube fibers absorb a very small amount of energy at low strain and become degraded in humid conditions. In this work, we use hot-drawing treatments, a concept inspired from textile technologies, to improve the properties of nanotube/PVA fibers. This treatment yields a crystallinity increase of the PVA and an unprecedented degree of alignment of the nanotubes. These structural modifications lead to a markedly improved energy absorption at low strain and make the fibers resistant to moisture. Hot-drawn nanotube/PVA fibers hold great potential for a number of applications such as bulletproof vests, protective textiles, helmets, and so forth.

Parental occupations and childhood brain tumors: results of an international case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of parental occupations in the etiology of childhood brain tumors (CBT). METHODS: Population-based case-control studies were conducted concurrently in seven countries under the coordination of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, gathering 1,218 cases and 2,223 controls. We report here the findings related to parental occupations during the 5-year period before the child's birth. Risk estimates related to a number of paternal and maternal occupations were obtained by unconditional logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, year of birth, and center, for all types of CBT combined and for the subgroups of astroglial, primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET), and other glial tumors. RESULTS: An increased risk in relation with agricultural work was seen for all CBT combined and for other glial tumors. Increased risks for all tumors and PNET were seen for paternal occupation as an electrician; the same pattern held for maternal occupation when children under 5 were selected. Paternal occupation as a driver or mechanic, and maternal work in an environment related to motor-vehicles were associated with an increased risk for all CBT and astroglial tumors. More case mothers compared to control mothers were employed in the textile industry. CONCLUSION: Our study reinforces previous findings relative to the role of parental work in agriculture, electricity, or motor-vehicle related occupations and maternal work in the textile industry. It does not confirm previous associations with work environments including aerospace, the chemical industry, or the food industry, or with maternal occupation as a hairdresser, a nurse, or a sewing machinist, and paternal occupation as a welder.

Contact allergy to Disperse Blue 106 and Disperse Blue 124 in German and Austrian patients, 1995 to 1999.

Between 1995 and 1999, 1986 patients were tested in the 31 participating centres of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK), all of them members of the German Contact Dermatitis Research Group, with a textile dyes series containing Disperse Blue (DB) 106 and 124, and since 1997 also with a mix of both. 86 patients (4.3%) reacted positively to DB 106 and/or DB 124; with good concordance between the 2 allergens (Cohen's weighted kappa 0.72), and the single allergens and the mix (kappa=0.75 in both cases), which had been tested in parallel in 969 and 975 patients, respectively. In contrast, concordance between DB 106/124 and p-phenylenediamine and p-aminoazobenzene, respectively, was poor. Some 70% of positive reactions to DB 106/124 had current clinical relevance. Furthermore, a significant increase in the proportion of DB 106/124-positive patients among those tested was found from 1995 to 1999. Hence, DB 106/124 are important allergens deserving close monitoring. The use of a mix of DB 106 and DB 124 seems justified in view of the close chemical similarity of both compounds. If possible, the presence of the allergen(s) in individual textiles considered causative should be checked by thin layer or column chromatography.

Irritants and allergens at school in relation to furnishings and cleaning.

In order to study the influence of furnishings and cleaning on the indoor air quality at school, 181 randomly chosen classrooms were investigated. The amounts of open shelves, textiles and other fittings were noted, data were gathered on cleaning routines, and a number of pollutants were measured in the classrooms. In classrooms with more fabrics there was more settled dust and the concentration of formaldehyde was higher. Classrooms with more open shelves had more formaldehyde, and more pet allergens in settled dust, and classrooms with a white board, instead of a chalk board, were less dusty. Classrooms mainly cleaned through wet mopping had more airborne viable bacteria but less settled dust than classrooms mainly cleaned by dry methods. In rooms where the desks and curtains were more often cleaned, the concentrations of cat and dog allergen in settled dust were lower. It is concluded that furnishings and textiles in the classroom act as significant reservoirs of irritants and allergens and have an impact on the indoor air quality at school.

Exposure to wheat allergen and fungal alpha-amylase in the homes of bakers.

BACKGROUND: Few data are available on exposure to occupational allergens in dwellings occupied by inhabitants with occupational exposure to allergens. In small bakeries working and living often takes place in the same building. It is possible that allergens from the bakery can be transported into the homes of the bakers, via the clothes or shoes of the baker. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to investigate exposure to occupational allergens, wheat and fungal alpha-amylase in the homes of bakers, and evaluate potential determinants of exposure. Sensitization in family members to occupational allergens was investigated in a small preliminary survey. METHODS: Floor dust samples were collected in the homes of 34 bakers. Levels of wheat and fungal alpha-amylase allergens were determined in an extract of the dust samples. Blood samples were collected from bakers and their family members to determine the prevalence of sensitization to occupational allergens. RESULTS: The concentration of wheat and alpha-amylase allergens ranged from 38.9 to 172.4 microgeq/m(2) (GM), to 10.5-76.7 ngeq/m(2) (GM). Higher levels of dust and allergens were measured when the house could be reached directly through the bakery, and in houses with textile floor covers. Higher concentrations were also measured when bakers brought their work clothes and shoes into the house and when textiles from the bakery were laundered at home. Some family members appeared to be sensitized to wheat flour and alpha-amylase, but it cannot be excluded that they became sensitized because of their incidental presence in the bakery. CONCLUSIONS: Occupational allergens can be found in house dust from the homes of bakers and levels are associated with hygienic behaviour and distance to the bakery.

Automated reconstruction of curvilinear fibres from 3D datasets acquired by X-ray microtomography.

The characterization of fibrous structures is important in both composites and textiles research for relating to the bulk properties of the material. However, the microscopic nature of the fibres and their high densities make them very difficult to characterize. Many techniques have been developed for the measurement and characterization of fibrous structures but they tend to be restricted to measurements on the sample surface or within physical cross-sections. X-ray microtomography can be used to non-destructively probe the internal structure of a range of fibrous materials, providing large amounts of 3D data. A technique has been developed for tracing fibres within 3D datasets acquired by X-ray microtomography and this has been applied to a glass fibre reinforced composite and also a non-woven textile sample. The 3D fibrous structures of both samples were successfully reconstructed and their fibre orientation distributions calculated. This technique enables novel characterizations, such as the through-thickness variation of fibre orientation in non-wovens.

Occupational urothelial tumours: a regional case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of occupational exposures in the risk of developing urothelial cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Occupational histories, obtained using a self-administered questionnaire, for 803 patients with urothelial cancer (first diagnosed 1991-93) were compared with similar information for 2135 matched controls. Relative risks (RRs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression. Comparisons were also made with historical regional employment information available from the 1971 census. RESULTS: There were many statistically significant positive associations for urothelial cancer risks and ever being employed in specified occupations (with or without statistical adjustment for smoking status in 1991). Smoking-adjusted RRs of > 2.0 were obtained for seven occupations; manufacture of fire lighters/ patent fuels (RR 4.30, 95% confidence interval 0.78-23.79), rodent extermination (3.71, 1.20-11.48), manufacture of dyestuffs (2.61, 0.98-7.00), leather work (2.51, 1.44-4.35), cable manufacturing industry (2.46, 1.20-5.04), textile printing and dyeing (2.32, 0.98-5.45), and sewage works (2.19, 1.16-4.11). Analyses of the occupations followed in 1971 (thus allowing for 20-year latency) indicated an elevated RR for workers in the plastics industry (5.22, 1.57-17.36). CONCLUSIONS: The historical legacy of exposure to aromatic amines in the rubber, cable-making, dyestuffs and other industries remains. An important proportion of patients presenting with urothelial tumours are likely to have had occupational exposure to urothelial carcinogens. A review of occupational exposures in the contemporaneous plastic, textile and leather industries is warranted.

Biodecolorization screening of synthetic dyes by four white-rot fungi in a solid medium: possible role of siderophores.

AIMS: Four selected fungi were screened for their ability to decolourize a textile effluent and commercial reactive dyes in a solid medium. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ligninolytic enzymes activities (lignin peroxidase, manganese peroxidase and laccase) and siderophores presence were monitored in decolourized plates. RESULTS: The results showed low lignin peroxidase activity and no manganese peroxidase activity was detected for all fungi. Laccase activity was observed in Reactive Blue 19 decolourized plates by Trametes versicolor and Trametes villosa. Siderophores presence was observed in Trametes versicolor, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Lentinus edodes decolourized plates. CONCLUSION: Lentinus edodes displayed the greatest decolourization ability both in terms of extent and rapidity of decolourization. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The transformation observed for dyes open the possibility to study siderophores to treat dyes and textile effluents.

What can we learn from explanted endovascular devices?

OBJECTIVE: To examine the durability of the Stentor and Vanguard endovascular devices in human implants. METHODS: The textile covering, the polypropylene ligatures and the stent metal of 34 devices (25 Stentor, 9 Vanguard) with a mean duration of implantation of 28.8 +/- 16 months was examined by means of stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: The polyester textile covering showed gaps along the sutured seam and isolated holes in the fabric. All of the examined polypropylene ligatures were worn, some ruptured. Four different types of stent corrosion were classified--pits (100%), bizarre craters (68%), large deficiencies (14%) and fractures (32%). CONCLUSION: Holes in the polyester fabric and frame dislocations are specific for the design of Stentor and Vanguard grafts. The early corrosion of the stent metal Nitinol in these devices is surprising. Until more experience is gained with other devices, we have to be reminded, that the "gold standard" for the long-term durability of artificial vascular grafts is still "today's" conventional graft.

[Allergy to dyes in stockings].

Skin allergies caused by the wearing of stockings and hose have received little attention. Findings in patients of an allergy department, enquiries at stocking counters of stores and recent publications indicate, however, that probably many more persons have an allergy to stocking dyes than is generally thought. Skin tests with isolated stocking dyes indicate that azo dye dispersion yellow 3, dispersion orange 3 and dispersion red 1 are the most important contact allergens. They were demonstrated in 18-21 of the 23 hose examined. In textile materials, azo dye dispersion blue 124 is predominant among allergens. Cross-reactions may occur to other dispersion azo dyes, used in cosmetics, textiles, toiletries and hygenic articles, permitted food additives and hair dyes. It is suggested that in persons who have dye allergy or intolerance, decolouration followed by colouring with natural colours be undertaken.

Pigmented purpuric contact dermatitis from Disperse Blue 106 and 124 dyes.

The diagnosis of purpura pigmentosa progressiva in a female patient had to be changed to purpuric contact dermatitis after patch testing with textile dyes. A modified patch test performed in the area in which most of her skin lesions were located revealed a petechial reaction to the azo dye Disperse Blue 124/106. For evaluation of purpura pigmentosa progressiva we suggest a patch test with potential allergens, and, especially for textile dyes, a patch test at the lesion site may be helpful.

A conserved motif within the vitamin K-dependent carboxylase gene is widely distributed across animal phyla.

The vitamin K-dependent gamma-glutamyl carboxylase catalyzes the posttranslational conversion of glutamic acid to gamma-carboxyglutamic acid, an amino acid critical to the function of the vitamin K-dependent blood coagulation proteins. Given the functional similarity of mammalian vitamin K-dependent carboxylases and the vitamin K-dependent carboxylase from Conus textile, a marine invertebrate, we hypothesized that structurally conserved regions would identify sequences critical to this common functionality. Furthermore, we examined the diversity of animal species that maintain vitamin K-dependent carboxylation to generate gamma-carboxyglutamic acid. We have cloned carboxylase homologs in full-length or partial form from the beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas), toadfish (Opsanus tau), chicken (Gallus gallus), hagfish (Myxine glutinosa), horseshoe crab (Limulus polyphemus), and cone snail (Conus textile) to compare these structures to the known bovine, human, rat, and mouse cDNA sequences. Comparison of the predicted amino acid sequences identified a nearly perfectly conserved 38-amino acid residue region in all of these putative carboxylases. In addition, this amino acid motif is also present in the Drosophila genome and identified a Drosophila homolog of the gamma-carboxylase. Assay of hagfish liver demonstrated vitamin K-dependent carboxylase activity in this hemichordate. These results demonstrate the broad distribution of the vitamin K-dependent carboxylase gene, including a highly conserved motif that is likely critical for enzyme function. The vitamin K-dependent biosynthesis of gamma-carboxyglutamic acid appears to be a highly conserved function in the animal kingdom.

Byssinosis: serum immunoglobulin and complement concentrations in cotton mill workers.

In two separate studies (labeled A and B), concentrations of IgC, IgM, IgA, C3, and C4 were determined in the sera of byssinotic and non-byssinotic cotton mill workers. In study A, sera were collected on Monday morning and Monday afternoon and Friday afternoon in order to ascertain if the waning byssinotic response from Monday to Friday correlates with changes in serum immunoglobulin and complement concentrations. In study B, sera was collected on Monday morning and afternoon and was performed primarily to evaluate history of atopy and smoking as complicating factors in byssinosis. In study A, the concentrations of all immunoproteins were found to decrease from Monday morning to to Friday afternoon in all textile workers, and in study B only C3 concentration decreased morning to afternoon. There was, however, no difference between the immunoprotein changes for byssinotic workers when compared to non-byssinotic workers in either study. Due to the fact that hypersensitivity pneumonitis causes a decrease in immunoprotein concentrations in affected workers while no decreases are noticed in normal workers, our data do not support an immune complex etiology for byssinosis. In addition, decreased serum C3 concentrations observed in this study could be caused by complement activation; however, there was no difference in complement levels between byssinotic and non-byssinotic textile workers. Therefore, these data neither support nor eliminate the involvement of antibody-independent complement activation in the pathogenesis of byssinosis.

Impact of wet underwear on thermoregulatory responses and thermal comfort in the cold.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the significance of wet underwear and to compare any influence of fibre-type material and textile construction of underwear on thermoregulatory responses and thermal comfort of humans during rest in the cold. Long-legged/long-sleeved underwear manufactured from 100% polypropylene in a 1-by-1 rib knit structure was tested dry and wet as part of a two-layer clothing system. In addition cotton (1-by-1 rib knit), wool (1-by-1 rib knit), polypropylene (fishnet), and a double-layer material manufactured from 47% wool and 53% polypropylene (interlock knit) was tested wet in the clothing system. In the wet condition 175 g of water was distributed in the underwear prior to the experiment. The test was done on eight men (T(a) = 10 degrees C, RH = 85%, V(a) < 0.1 m/s), and comprised a 60 min resting period. Skin temperature, rectal temperature, and weight loss were recorded during the test. Total changes in body and clothing weight were measured separately. Furthermore, subjective ratings on thermal comfort and sensation were collected. The tests demonstrated the significant cooling effect of wet underwear on thermoregulatory responses and thermal comfort. Further, the tests showed that textile construction of underwear in a two-layer clothing ensemble has an effect on the evaporation rate from clothing during rest in the cold resulting in a significant difference in mean skin temperature. The thickness of the underwear has more of an influence on the thermoregulatory responses and thermal comfort, than the types of fibres tested.

Microencapsulation and testing of the agricultural animal repellent, Daphne.

The microencapsulated animal repellent Daphne was prepared by in situ polymerization of melamine-formaldehyde prepolymer with styrene-maleic acid anhydride copolymer as a modifying agent. Pure Daphne (a mixture of essential oils and other volatile compounds) and Daphne (45 wt%) diluted with isopropylmyristate (55 wt%) were used as core materials. Three types of formulations were prepared: (1) aqueous suspension concentrates, to be diluted for spraying, (2) thickened pastes with microcapsules for coating tree bark, and (3) textile, paper and metal strips, coated or impregnated with microcapsules. In field testing, all formulations with microcapsules showed a prolonged effect in comparison with non-encapsulated Daphne. The repelling effect on animals was stronger in summer and weaker in winter, when the pressure of the animals was much more intense, and diffusion of repellent from the microcapsules was reduced due to low temperatures. However, pastes for the bark and non-woven textile strips impregnated with microencapsulated Daphne showed good repelling effect against deer and rabbits in the winter period.

Order of photocatalytic degradation as ranked by critical photonic times (CPTs) indicates the composition of organic dye mixtures: selectivity of hydroxyl radicals.

A simple critical photonic time (CPT) ranking method for the simultaneous determination of known organic dyes in the industrial wastewater of different concentrations was developed. A kinetic-measure, CPT theory, was developed to discriminate between the dyes in the textile effluent solution. The CPTs were calculated and ranked 1-4 from the smallest to the largest. The ranks indicate the order in which the individual dyes in the effluents were photocatalytically degraded. The described procedure allowed us to monitor the decolorization kinetics of the dyes in mixtures of different concentrations, when subjected to immobilized TiO2 photocatalysis in the presence of H2O2 from the start (H2O2FS). The outcome of hydroxyl radical (HO*) attack was consistently specific and regioselective for the individual dyes in the textile effluent. To explain the effect of HO*, the order of degradation of Acid Orange 52 < Acid Yellow 36 < Acid Red 17 < Acid Blue 45 < polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was inferred.

Modified mesh for hernia repair that is adapted to the physiology of the abdominal wall.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a new mesh for hernia repair that is adapted to the physiological forces. DESIGN: Animal experiment. SETTING: Surgical Department of the RWTH-Aachen. ANIMALS: Wistar rats MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Textile analysis, tensile strength, bending stiffness, histology and morphometry. RESULTS: After textile analysis of commercially available meshes in clinical use we defined the physiological forces and constructed a new mesh (Soft Hernia Mesh, SHM) based on a combination of non-absorbable polypropylene and absorbable polyglactin 910. The amount of non-absorbable material could be reduced to < 30% compared with Marlex while still guaranteeing the necessary pulling force of 16 N/cm. Improvements of the hosiery structure improved the symmetrical distribution of the retaining forces in all directions. Compared with the considerable restriction of the abdominal wall mobility by Prolene (polypropylene) and Mersilene (polyester) meshes there was no increase in the bending stiffness after the implantation of the new mesh. Histological examination showed a pronounced reduction of the inflammatory reaction in the tissues, and the collagen bundles were orientated merely around the mesh filaments instead of forming a scar plate that completely embedded the mesh. CONCLUSION: Different meshes caused specific histological reactions with changes of their mechanical properties after implantation in rodents. A new mesh with a reduced amount of polypropylene showed both less inflammation and less restriction in the mobility of the abdominal wall though it exceeded the required tensile strength of 16 N/cm.
