[Spectral analysis of chromatin and its components in the vacuum ultraviolet region of the spectrum].

Electronic absorption spectra of thin films of chromatin and chromatin components in ultraviolet (140-280 nm) were investigated. The absorption coefficients mu (lambda) of chromatin, nucleosomes with and without histone H1, total histones (TH), DNA were compared. The spectra of nucleosomes and chromatin differ from summary spectra of DNA + TH. The lack of additivity of absorption coefficients at different wavelengths may be explained by different conformational changes of free DNA, TH and DNA, TH in nucleosomes and chromatin during the process of drying aqueous solutions for the preparations of thin films. The obtained mu (lambda) values are necessary for the estimation of the DNA and TH parts of absorption in chromatin and nucleosomes in the investigations of UV and VUV irradiation damages.

Spectral analysis of breath sounds in normal newborn infants.

To determine whether breath sounds in newborns are different from those described in older subjects, fast Fourier transform and power spectra analysis were performed on recorded breath sounds from 14 normal newborns. A respiration-triggered sampling technique was applied to compare early, middle, and late phases of inspiration and expiration, using a thoracic impedance signal. Peak frequencies were found in the range described for normal breath sounds in older subjects, and the frequency range of breath sounds was similar to that reported for older children and adults. The difference in breath sound quality of normal newborns appears to depend on the sound intensity during expiration. In contrast to older subjects, newborns showed only slightly less sound intensity during expiration; in the late phases of inspiration and expiration this intensity was almost equal.

[Spectral analysis of cerebrospinal fluid pulse wave].

The change of the cerebrospinal pressure wave from during the continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure is often experienced. We supposed that this phenomenon would be the result of the change of transmission of spinal fluid pulse through the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) system. Our study was performed to determine the change of auto power spectrum of CSF pulse when CSF pressure was increased by the slow infusion of lactate linger solution. The spectrum of CSF pulse was found to be composed of four main waves; wave derived from the respiratory movement, fundamental wave of cardiac origin and its 2nd and 3rd harmonic waves. The power of waves derived from the cardiac beats were increased when CSF pressure was elevated by the slow infusion, but the degree of increment was larger in the fundamental wave than harmonic waves. Elevation of CSF pressure caused relative attenuation of the harmonic waves included in CSF pulse. From the result of this study we found that CSF system would have the function of "high-cut filter" and its cut-off frequency was lowered by the slow infusion of lactate linger solution.

[Spectral analysis of the human EEG in acutely developing foci of irritation at the diencephalic and brain stem levels].

The dynamic study of EEG spectra and coherence in 52 patients in early period after tumor ablation at the diencephalic (27 patients) and brainstem (25 patients) levels with favourable (24 patients) and lethal (28 patients) outcomes revealed a dependence of their changes on the reversibility or irreversibility of pathological irritation of these brain levels. At regressively developing foci and retained compensatory mechanisms characteristic changes of EEG relations were seen in the central cortical areas, i. e. in cortical projection zone of the nonspecific thalamic pathways. The changes observed consisted of EEG synchronization in the band of 7 cps and sharp coherence increase while changes of EEG correlations in other cortical areas were unsimilar. Gradual EEG normalization with alpha-rhythm restoration passed through the stage of sigma-rhythm and slow sleeplike waves which indicated the safety of brainstem-subcortical hypnogenic systems. In patients with destructive foci at the diencephalic and brainstem levels, i. e. under conditions of brain functioning similar to "cerveau isolé" and "encephale isolé",--a general coherence decrease and EEG synchronization in the band of 5 cps, or generalized slow, monomorphic oscillations were observed.
