The shielding effect of various types of human hair and the influence of a shampoo on the transmission of grenz rays were determined by ionization chamber measurements. The mean transmission proved to be 53.7% with clean hair and 48.1% with hair shampooed one week before. P less than 0.05 (n = 50) (Pratt's test). A relationship was found between weight of hair layer and transmission. In clinical practice, the thickness of the hair should be assessed, and the normal skin dose multiplied by 1.5 for patients with a thin hair layer, by 2 in the case of a medium, and by 3 in the case of a thick hair layer.

A case of perifolliculitis capitis is reported in which the patient was initially treated with high-dose intravnous antibiotics and topical antibacterial agents without success. Systemic corticosteroids were instituted, with rapid subsidence of disease activity. One year later, the patient remains on 5 mg of prednisone on alternate days, and is free of disease activity. In view of other more aggressive treatments reported in the literature for this disease, high-dosage prednisone with rapid change to alternate-day dosage is a reasonable initial course of action.

A questionnaire survey of head lice treatment was conducted in four schools--each including a nursery and an elementary school--in the Bordeaux area. Two schools were situated in the centre of the city, one in a suburban area and one in a rural area (50 km from the city). Four-page questionnaires were filled in anonymously by the parents in April 1991; 840 answers were obtained (80 p. 100 response rate). Between January 1990 and March 1991, 48.7 p. 100 of children had at least one episode of head lice infestation (infestation rates varied from 38.8 to 62.6 p. 100 depending on the schools); 30.5 p. 100 of children were contaminated for the first time during that period. Lice were detected by the parents in 95 p. 100 of the cases. The prevalence of lice was higher in females (60 p. 100) than in males (40 p. 100). The highest prevalence was noted in the suburban school where 17 p. 100 of the parents were unemployed at the time of the survey. The peak age for head lice was 7, but 19.4 p. 100 of nursery school children aged 2-4 years had been contaminated at least once. Impetigo was rare (1.2 p. 100), and pruritus was noted in only 14.2 p. 100 of the cases. Most children had been contaminated at school. Curative treatment was counselled by a chemist in 87 p. 100 of the cases. Pyrethrins were used in 81 p. 100, and the shampoo (Hegor) plus spray (Paraspecial Poux) association was the most frequent, totalling two-thirds of prescriptions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

A case of a patient with headache, visual deficiency in his left eye quickly worsening up to blindness and ischemic necrosis in the scalp regions supplied by the superficial temporal arteries, is reported. This acute gangrene began as a bandlike ischemic lesion in the temporo-parietal regions of both sides, rapidly enlarged, and acquired bizarre irregular outlines. Laboratory investigations and particularly superficial temporal artery biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of Horton's temporal arteritis, in accordance with the anamnestic and clinical data assessed at admission.

After a recall of different existing kinds of louse, pediculicides and their mode of action, the authors report the bio-clinical trials they carried out in Antananarivo using different associations and galenic forms of medicines. The objectives of these studies on the treatment of scalp pediculosis is either the development of efficient insecticides or the application for the official permit of sale.
