[Spongy dressings from alginic acid salts in the treatment of suppurative wounds].

Spongy dressing materials made from alginic acid salts, specifically immobilized with terrilitinum (teralginum) were found to reduce the period of wound purification from suppurative and necrotic tissues and to facilitate more rapid, viz. 1.5-fold compared to the control, patient recovery, particularly after preliminary wound treatment with defocussed CO2 laser beam. In the group on teralginum, the cytological study demonstrated more intensive wound purification from microflora, more active growth and differentiation of reparation cells, specifically of fibroblasts, which influences the results of accelerated wound healing.

Glasgow patients' attitude to doctors' dress and appearance.

Three hundred out patients were surveyed by questionnaire to determine their views of doctors' dress and appearance. The majority felt that this was important. Most patients did not mind a male doctor with an earring, a women in trousers or a man without a tie. A majority preferred their doctors to wear a white coat, be free of political badges and for men to have conventional length hair. Older patients are stricter than young patients. Most strict patients would accept more relaxed standards at night and during the weekend.

A dressing for repair of acute nail bed injury.

The use of a temporary metal foil stent after primary repair of acute nail bed injuries is a simple and dependable method for restoration of the smooth nail bed. The stent prevents adherence of the proximal nail fold to the underlying matrix, promoting patient comfort during subsequent dressing changes.

The effect of a pressure-relieving wound dressing on the interface pressures applied to the trochanter.

A pressure-relieving dressing (PRD/Coloplast A/S, Denmark) was tested on 12 healthy volunteers to determine trochanteric and peritrochanteric interface pressures. Use of the PRD reduced the maximum pressure applied to the apex of the trochanter from a mean of 64.2 mm Hg to a mean of 52.2 mm Hg. The author speculates that this statistically significant difference may have clinical relevance for 79% of pressure ulcers in England and Wales but not for the 21% of pressure ulcers with cavities.

Wound dressing after skin planing.

A variety of dressings have been used following skin planing. Compresses are difficult to apply and simple bandages stick tight and are hard to remove. The Department of Dermatology has for several years used Collagen film, but this film is no longer commercially available. After 12 patients with acne scars underwent skin planing, synthetic polyurethanefilm (Omiderm) was applied for 7 days, with good results.

[Cadmium exposure and health effects among residents in irrigation area with ore dressing wastewater].

About 0.05 mg Cd/L was found in the irrigation water contaminated by the wastewater discharged from the wolfram ore dressing plants, and about 1 mg Cd/kg was found in irrigated acid soil. The main sources of the cadmium intake by residents, living in pollution areas, were agricultural products. The average intake of cadmium was 366.7-381.9 micrograms/d, smokers 416.6 micrograms/d. Among residents, who have been exposed to cadmium for more than 25 years, cadmium absorption (CdU greater than or equal to 10 micrograms/g Cre) was 60% and early effect of target organ (CdU greater than or equal to 15 micrograms/g Cre and beta 2 -mU greater than or equal to 500 micrograms/g Cre) was 17%. Levels of CdU and CdB were beyond the critical value in the observation areas. The concentrations of CaU, beta 2-mU and NAGU were significantly higher among residents in observation areas compared with control areas. Owing to the combined cadmium effect the cases with fractional beta 2-m excretion greater than 0.10 were 46% in the observation areas, and it was much higher than that in control areas (20.3%) in a case-control study among residents who have been suffering from an original nephropathy with tubulo-interstitial abnormalities.

Use of a transparent adhesive dressing in very low birthweight infants.

The present study was designed to test the safety and efficacy of a transparent adhesive dressing (TAD) to decrease transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in very low birthweight (VLBW) infants. Thirteen infants with birthweights of 770-1,450 g were randomly assigned to either routine care (n = 7) or TAD (n = 6). There were no differences between the groups with regard to weight at birth, length, head circumference, skinfold thickness measures, and fluid balance at any time during the study period. Electric current used by the radiant warmer operated in the servo-control mode was measured using a clamp-type AC ammeter connected to a single channel recorder. The TAD group used an average of 112 +/- 3.9 watts (n = 30 observation periods), the control group 133 +/- 5.5 (n = 34 observation periods), P = less than .01. TEWL measured by an evaporimeter in four infants of each group was significantly higher in the control group than it was in the TAD group in the area where the skin was covered.

Evaluation of dressing protocols that reduce peritoneal dialysis catheter exit site infections.

Exit site infections (ESIs) remain a major complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). This study was designed to evaluate various catheter care techniques that would decrease ESIs during the 3 months following catheter implantation. Factors that affect wound healing were studied by evaluating preoperative and postoperative variables, skin cleansing agents, and three types of dressings. A 40% reduction in ESIs occurred following implementation of a new protocol that was developed from the knowledge acquired after studying the catheter care protocols.

Patients' preferences for resident physician dress style.

A survey study was conducted to determine patients' preferences for resident physician attire as well as the relationship of physicians' attire to patient satisfaction and perception of the quality of care. Questionnaire responses were obtained from 200 consecutive subjects equally divided among four clinical settings (a hospital-based internal medicine clinic, an emergency room, an internal medicine ward, and a community-based internal medicine clinic) which are maintained by the University of California, Irvine, Medical Center. The questionnaires were administered only to English-speaking patients who had seen a physician on a previous visit. A majority of the patients at the four settings indicated that they had no preference regarding attire (70.5% for male doctors, 66.5% for female doctors): however, 44% of the patients said that neatness of dress was moderately to very important. The aggregate findings were not greatly altered when adjusted for demographic variables such as age, sex, race, occupational status, and education.

[Local treatment of burn injuries and traumatic wounds with a hydrogel Geliperm dressing].

Hydrogel Geliperm dressings of BYK Goldbin - Konstanz and Geistlich Sons Ldt. firms were used in patients in case of skin burns and some traumatic wounds. During a four-year observation it was discovered that those materials are safe for the patient, their removing is painless and their are fully useful in the treatment of burns and traumatic wounds in surgical departments and in the ambulatory treatment. Geliperm does not have allergic action. Because of its physicochemical and biological properties Geliperm may have also usage for example in the treatment of leg ulcerations, of bed-sores and of radiation skin defect.

[Hygienic research on meat-dressing shops and enterprises].

Observations were made on the hygiene state of the meat-conditioning departments and enterprises of 13 meat-dressing combines. Both qualitative and quantitative investigations were carried out with regard to 9 bacteriologic indexes. The result of studies on a total of 1,042 samples of washings taken from equipment, working tools, machines, working milieu, and hands and aprons of workers prior to beginning work showed that in case all regulations of cleaning, washing, and disinfection were observed the residual microflora, and, more specifically organisms that were of interest from a sanitary point of view were lowered to minimum counts. No pathogenic Staphylococcus and Salmonella organisms were isolated. It was found that during work the count of indicative organisms considerably rose. No pathogenic staphylococci were isolated. In one case only were there Salmonella typhimurium organisms on the surface of a circular saw for carcass cutting. The overall bacteriologic investigation of a total of 137 samples of minced meat and meat balls and other products prepared with such meat revealed that the average counts of various organisms ranged as follows: aerobic mesophiles--3,653 830/g, and coliforms--31,748/g; Escherichia coli organisms were demonstrated in 10.22 per cent of the cases, B. proteus--in 1.46 per cent, and pathogenic staphylococci--in 3.65 per cent of the samples. None of the samples, weighing 25 g each showed the presence of Salmonellae. No correlative dependence was found between the coli titer and the coli index of the products.
