An initiative to develop a standard for professional development is outlined. The standard takes a structure, process, outcome format. Its development resulted in several initiatives being introduced to the unit including: the introduction of a self and peer review system, the introduction of learning contracts and the introduction of the concept of reflection. It was considered that these initiatives would promote individual professional accountability, increases self-awareness and reflective practice. The initiatives may be viewed in the context of PREP, United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (1990) and the Higher Award, English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (1991). The audit of the standard may be a tool to measure 'value for money' used in professional development.
Only six health care systems in the nation have received the Magnet Nursing Services Recognition Award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in Washington, DC. This prestigious designation acknowledges quality of patient care services and the development of successful, professional nursing practices and strategies. Here is how one hospital used clerical staff to help it win this award.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between verbal ability, age, extent of education and professional experience (separately and in combination), and level of cognitive development of dental hygiene students and practitioners. Forty-five dental hygiene students and graduates (15 associate degree subjects without professional experience; 15 associate degree subjects with professional experience; and 15 baccalaureate degree subjects with professional experience) participated in this cross-sectional study. The Measure of Intellectual Development (MID), a semi-structured, generation cognitive task, was used to assess cognitive development (position/stage of intellectual development). MID protocols were scored separately and blindly by two raters resulting in high interrater reliability and agreement estimates. In general, subjects were functioning at a relatively low level (position 3 multiplicity) of cognitive development. Baccalaureate degree subjects tended to function at a higher position than subjects in the other two groups. There was a significant, positive correlation between extent of education and level of cognitive development.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has developed a performance assessment capability to address three programmatic areas in nuclear waste management: high-level waste, low-level waste, and decommissioning of licensed facilities (license termination). The NRC capability consists of: (1) methodologies for performance assessment; (2) models and computer codes for estimating system performance; (3) regulatory guidance in various forms, such as regulations, Branch Technical Positions, and Standard Review Plans; and (4) a technical staff experienced in executing and evaluating performance assessments for a variety of waste systems. Although the tools and techniques are refined for each programmatic area, general approaches and similar issues are encountered in all areas.
There is limited literature for operational management competency development in E and F grade nursing staff. These grades of nursing staff have to take over from G grade nurses ward managers on a regular basis. With human resources doing less of the operational management and taking more of an advisory role, nursing staff are now required to deal with disciplinary procedures and other management issues in a more consistent manner. Therefore, this development programme in a Scottish primary care NHS psychiatric service was designed to enable E and F grade nurses to take over from ward managers and to enable ward managers to 'succession plan' for times when they will be absent. The literature is reviewed, the background to the development programme described and the design of the development programme is explained. The results from both the pilot study (n=13) and first group (n=8) through the course are presented, evaluated discussed.
Advanced abilities to think critically are necessary to improve clinical systems, decrease errors and sentinel events, and engage staff involvement to refine patient care systems. The authors explore practical methods, based on current research, to promote mature critical-thinking skills in healthcare professionals, from patient care clinical judgment to a leadership perspective. Individual and organizational accountabilities for expanding critical thinking skills are investigated, and a problem-solving model is proposed as a coordinated strategy.
This article describes the process undertaken by the nursing staff, management staff, and education department of a community hospital-based outpatient dialysis unit to address the numerous issues related to the management of anemia in their dialysis population. Through good observations and assessments made by the nursing staff, major problems related to anemia management were identified. As a result, staff members developed a medication protocol and a tracking tool to better manage the anemia associated with chronic renal failure. Evaluation of this protocol and tracking tool demonstrated improvement in two clinical patient outcomes and two unit management outcomes.
