[Concepts of AIDS in relation to health and illness in homosexual men living in Quebec with AIDS].

Herzlich's (1969) theoretical framework was used to explore Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) from the point of view of affected individuals. Content analysis was performed on transcripts of interviews with eight French Canadian gay men living with AIDS. Results indicate that health and illness are socially constructed concepts and that health can coexist with illness. The authors discuss how Herzlich's framework can be used by nurses to better understand the individual's experience of illness and to guide the individual towards making behavioural changes that will generate health throughout the course of the illness.

Factors associated with glycemia and microvascular complications among James Bay Cree Indian diabetics of Quebec.

We conducted a chart review of physician diagnosed diabetics to obtain plasma glucose levels (fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin) over a retrospective 30 month time span and data on the presence or absence of current renal or ophthalmic microvascular complications. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with the presence of microvascular complications. Poor glycemic control reflected by a need of insulin therapy (odds ratio (OR) = 2.7, confidence internal (CI): 1.1, 6.7), increased serum triglyceride levels (OR = 4.5, CI: 2.0, 9.9) and duration of illness of more than five years (OR = 3.0, CI: 1.2, 7.8) were found to be associated with the presence of microangiopathies. Process of care and temporary reversion to traditional lifestyle and diet did not influence glycemic control. Our results points towards a need for an increased awareness of lipid disorders in diabetic patients and a better understanding of how social and psychological factors are related to metabolic outcomes.

A seroepidemiological study of the importance in cow-calf pairs of respiratory and enteric viruses in beef operations from northwestern Quebec.

Serum antibody analyses for bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine coronavirus (BCV), and bovine rotavirus (BRV) were performed on 527 randomly selected cows, before calving, and on 407 three-week-old calves. In cows and calves, BCV and BRV were the most seroprevalent viruses (80% to 100% according to virus and vaccination status). Bovine respiratory syncytial virus was the least seroprevalent in the cows, independent of the vaccination status. In nonvaccinated cows the seroprevalence to BRSV was 36.7%, and 53.5% in cows vaccinated less than two weeks prior to collecting blood, and 67.6% in cows vaccinated two weeks or more prior to blood collection. In their calves, BHV-1 was the least seroprevalent, independent of the vaccination status. The serological status and antibody titers in calves were generally associated with those of the dam. The occurrence of respiratory diseases in the calves was associated with cow and calf serological profiles (BHV-1, BRSV and BCV in the nonvaccinated group, BHV-1, BVDV and BCV in the vaccinated group). The occurrence of diarrhea was not associated with cow and calf serological profiles but was negatively associated with high level calf serum IgG in the nonvaccinated group (odds ratio = 0.73). Bovine coronavirus and BRV were shed by 1.4% and 4.9% of calves in the nonvaccinated group, and by 0% and 9.9% of calves in the vaccinated group, respectively. Bovine rotavirus shedding was associated with fecal diarrheic consistency at the moment of fecal sampling but not with previous occurrence of diarrhea.

[Suicide among young male adults in Quebec: psychopathology and utilization of medical services].

Seventy five young male adults between the age of 18 and 35 who had committed suicide were compared with 75 male adults still alive matched for age, residence, marital and employment status. For each group a principal respondent was interviewed in order to reconstitute the psychological profile of each individual, as well as their utilisation of health services. This was completed by the study of the coroner's reports and the medical records when available. At six months the prevalence for all axis I diagnosis was 88.8% for the suicide group and 37.3% for the control group. Among the subjects who had committed suicide 38.7% were afflicted by major depression, 24% by alcohol dependency and 28.7% were dependent on drugs. Borderline personalities were present in 28% of the suicide group compared to 5% in the control group. Forty five percent (45%) of the subjects who had killed themselves had consulted a mental health professional in the year preceding the suicide compared to 5% in the control group. However, 78.5% of the suicide group had consulted during the same period a health professional compared to 73.3% of the controls.
