Learning clinical teaching. Is it magic?

Clinical teaching in nursing is a complex phenomenon that lacks a coherent theoretical base and is perplexing to novices, who tend to teach as they were taught. Nursing educators must find strategies to assist novice clinical teachers to learn the practice of clinical teaching. This article reports on the findings of a qualitative study that describes the process of learning clinical teaching through the voices of five novice and five expert clinical teachers. Essential differences between novices and experts are presented, and the challenges of preparing clinical teachers are discussed.

[Lassie's magic: animal-assisted therapy in Taiwan].

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a goal-directed intervention, which involves placing appropriately qualified animals into the therapeutic environment of human patients. AAT is also a cross-professional cooperation model combining different health related disciplines, such as veterinary science, animal behavior, medicine, nursing, rehabilitation, and education. Based on concepts of concern for the welfare of both humans and animals, AAT provides an alternative route to comprehensive human health. This article describes the development and current state of canine Animal-Assisted Therapy in Taiwan. It covers the development of the relationship between humans and animals, a review of the literature about AAT, research, development, and outcomes in respect of the current AAT system in Taiwan. It also discusses practical issues concerning the AAT system, by means of examples. Suggestions regarding future services, professional development, education and research are also discussed.

["The very wise Heloise". On dependency and resistance of the female in relation to actual male dominance and the magic power of its representation].

Psychoanalytical theory of femininity starts from the assumption that specific patterns of identification can be traced back historically to ancient traditions which frequently remain unconscious to those concerned. In the 12th century, the abbess Heloise advocated ideals which on the one hand questioned the medieval image of woman, while on the other hand she sought to be in accordance with the socially domineering male (Abaelard) who represented the intellectual life. The correspondence between Heloise and Abaelard reveals paradigmatically Heloise's conflict between rebellion and resignation, between the striving for autonomy and regression, which is resolved in some form of female narcissism.

Cationization of monoclonal antibodies: another step towards the "magic bullet"?

Monoclonal antibodies have represented since the beginning a potent means to identify specific antigen. The engineering of monoclonal antibodies has created a new generation of pharmaceuticals with the desired pharmacokinetics and biodistribution properties. Optimum tumor targeting can be achieved using engineering constructs that provide high antigen affinity and specificity, effective tumor penetration with acceptable doses to normal tissue. Cationization is a technique to modify antibodies in such a way as to develop improved radiopharmaceuticals. A brief review of how monoclonal antibodies can be modified to improve their applicability for target therapies and diagnosis is here presented.
