[Psychological aspects of training for and implementation of a piloted expedition to Mars].

Reviewed are the modern notions of the main psychological concerns regarding a mission to Mars which are maintenance of mental health, high professional reliability, and successful readaptation of the Martian crew on return to Earth. The unprecedent trail-blazing interplanetary mission distinguished by autonomy, long period, international crew and a broad range of tasks to tend will set particularly difficult requirements to the psychological support system. Among them prioritized are purposeful character building and training of future crew members already in childhood and youth. The primary goal is to bring up personality with anthropocosmic thinking as a professional quality that will eventually determine personal and professional reliability. Within the system of psychological support, the central place should be given to monitoring of crew mental heath and behavior, and preventive an corrective measures. The longer Martian day (24 hr. 36 min.) rises the issue of effective adaptation to this factor. Special simulators will be required aboard the vehicle to help the crew refresh skills in manipulation of the dynamic board systems. The program of psychological support to the Martian crew must be thoroughly tested in model studies (Antarctic field, ground-based experiments, orbital flights, Lunar base).

[The demographic structure and fertility levels of the population in the new and old slum areas of a "gecekondu" settlement in Antalya Province center].

"The demographic structure and fertility level of the population in two slum areas [in Turkey's Antalya Province]...were investigated with a cross-sectional study in 1989. It was found that the distribution of population by age groups differed and especially the fertility measurements were high in the new area in relation to various social and demographic characteristics. In order to facilitate and accelerate the transition period of slum communities, it is necessary to provide health education, mother and child health and family planning services." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Births averted under family planning programme: a mathematical approach.

"In this paper a probability model is proposed to describe the distribution of births to couples in first T years of marriage, when T is large and/or when couples use various methods of family planning. This model is derived on the assumption that conditional instantaneous risk of a conception, the incidence of foetal loss and the chance of attaining [sterility] following a child birth are functions of parity....The application of the model in evaluation of family planning programme changes in the child bearing pattern is illustrated."

Detection of signals in mRNAs that influence translation.

Genome sequencing efforts mean that we now have extensive data from a wide range of organisms to study. Understanding the differing natures of the biology of these organisms is an important aim of genome analysis. We are interested in signals that affect translation of mRNAs. Some signals in the mRNA influence how efficiently it is translated into protein. Previous studies have indicated that many important signals are located around the initiation and termination codons. We have developed tools described here to extract the relevant sequence regions from GenBank. To create databases organised by species, or higher taxonomic groupings (eg planta), a program was developed to dynamically view and edit the taxonomy database. Data from relevant species were then extracted using our Genbank feature table parser. We analysed all available sequences, particularly those from complete genomes. Patterns were then identified using information theory. The software is available from http://transterm.otago.ac.nz. Patterns around the initiation codons for most of the organisms fall into two groups, containing the previously known Shine-Dalgarno and Kozaks efficiency signals. However, we have identified several organisms that appear to utilise novel systems. Our analysis indicates that some organisms with extremely high GC% genomes do not have a strong dependence on base pairing ribosome binding sites, as the complementary sequence is absent from many genes.
