[Influence of noise and vibrations on teeth abrasion].

The purpose of the investigation was to determine the influence of noise and vibrations on teeth abrasion in textile workers. For testing purposes a random sample of 115 workers who were exposed to 99-105 decibels of noise, was selected. After thorough investigations it was found that noise was a detrimental stress--producing factor causing quite a number of diseases. Noise can be a stress-producing factor causing parafunctions. The parafunctions are a major aetiological factor that causes teeth abrasion. These investigations proved the correlation between the duration of noise and exposure to vibrations and patological abrasion of hard teeth tissues. The teeth abrasion was more frequent in textile workers who were long exposed to high level of noise.

[Role of noise as stress--factor in parafunctions].

The purpose of this paper was to show how relevant was the chronic professional exposure to noise in the occurrence of parafunctions of the stomatognathic region in textile workers. All investigations were carried out on a sample of 72 textile workers (males and females), who worked in high noise conditions. It was found that the level of noise ranged from 99 to 105 decibels, with some extreme values to 130 decibels. In addition to family history, an interview was carried out with each worker about his her individual noise--sensitivity to bruxism. A correlation was found between the noise level and parafunctions. The obtained result showed that the frequency of parafunction was 30.5% higher in workers working in high-noise environment.

[Progressive complications associated with polyester arterial prostheses. Study of 61 specimens following surgical excision].

Reports of individual surgical cases tend to be anecdotal because of the unique circumstances surrounding the patient, the surgeon, the intervention and, where applicable, the prosthetic device. To overcome this limitation the authors have taken a wider collaborative approach and report the analysis of 61 explanted polyester arterial prostheses associated with delayed complications on 53 patients reoperated upon in six different French hospitals. One advantage of such an independent and centralized retrieval programme is that the impact of centre specific factors, such as patient selection and surgical techniques, is minimized. Consequently, by following a standardized protocol for the evaluation of the morphologic, pathologic and mineralogic characteristics of the tissue surrounding the excised grafts, as well as the textile structure of the prostheses themselves, it has been possible to distinguish between iatrogenic and disease related complications and to demonstrate a number of general findings associated with the clinical performance of polyester arterial prostheses. Complications such as thromboses, infections and false aneurysms appear to occur randomly after different lengths of implantation, thicker fibrous tissue capsules are associated with velour grafts with highly textured yarns, the incidence of mineralized tissue and of endothelialized luminal surfaces is rare, weft knitted textile prostheses appear less mechanically stable and more sensitive to iatrogenic trauma than warp knitted, and the incidences of lipid and cholesterol adsorption, bacterial colonization and sterile fluid loss need further investigation. These observations lead to the recommendation that for patients with longer life expectancies surgeons should consider selecting low porosity, woven or warped knitted prostheses which contain yarns that have not been highly textured.

Studies on water vapor pressure gradient from external air through clothing to the skin in relation to external humidity and clothing conditions.

Using a hygrometric capsule method developed by the authors, water vapor pressure was measured at each layer of clothing as well as at the skin surface on a human subject under actual wearing conditions. The pattern of vapor pressure gradient from the skin surface through clothing to the external air was examined in relation to the ambient vapor pressure and ths sort of textiles worn. The following findings were obtained. 1) Water vapor pressure gradient was greater between coat and external air than that between coat and underwear. The gradient became steeper again between underwear and the skin. 2) Under given clothing conditions, vapor pressure at each layer of clothing as well as at the skin varied according to the ambient humidity. However, the pattern of vapor pressure gradient from the skin through clothing to the external air was not greatly influenced by the external humidity. 3) The pattern of vapor pressure gradient from the skin through clothing to the external air was not greatly influenced by the external humidity. 3) The pattern of vapor pressure gradient through the clothing as a whole differed according to the kinds of textiles used for coat and underwear.

Natural and synthetic fibers as causes of asthma and rhinitis.

One hundred and thirty-six textile workers were tested with natural fibers; 97 were tested with synthetic fibers. By inhalation testing 20% were positive to both types of fibers; by nasal provocative testing 30% were positive. There was a close correlation between the size of the wheals in the prick tests and the percentage of fiber challenge tests. Fiber provocation tests and metacholine tests did not display any conformity with each other. The authors feel that synthetic fibers may act as haptens and cause Type I or IgE-mediated allergy and both natural and synthetic fibers should be considered important causes of occupational asthma among textile workers.

A behavioral examination of workers exposed to carbon disulfide.

The present study was conducted with a group of 298 textile workers. Of the workers studied 131 had worked at least one year in a rayon plant where there were CS2 exposures of varying degree, but generally below 20 ppm, which is the U.S. occupational exposure limit. The remaining 167, who worked in plants that manufactured other textiles where any CS2 exposure was considered inconsequential, comprised a comparison group. The 298 workers completed a checklist of symptoms characteristic of various neurobehavioral syndromes. Mood and excitability were measured by the Profile of Mood States, and by a mania scale from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, respectively. Cognitive and psychomotor performance was studied by application of four standard tasks: the Neisser letter search, the memory span test, the eye-hand coordination test, and a combined simple and complex reaction time test. The results indicated an absence of behavioral changes of any major significance, suggesting that effects here may only be marginal. The major finding related to the significant cluster of reported symptoms of neurobehavioral ailments.

[Effect of various furniture covering fabrics on heat regulation and comfort].

The effects of three different materials for furniture fabrics (wool, polyacrylonitrile and Skai) on thermophysiological parameters and comfort were studied. In a laboratory design male, middle aged subjects were tested three times for three hours in a climate chamber, being exposed to internal and external thermal strains as well as to stress inducing situations. The outcome of this research suggests an essential influence of the structure of the tested materials but only small influences by the kind of fibres. The test situation "Skai" induced markedly different effects on skin temperature, skin moisture level and self rated thermal comfort as compared to both textile materials: A high sweat secretion followed by a continuously increasing moisture accumulation could be observed, especially for areas of the body surface which were tight contact with the material. Simultaneously a distinct skin temperature decrease at the back was found, which can be interpreted as a consequence of a high heat conduction due to the material itself as well as by sweat vaporization when the back was lifted from the backrest. The differences between the natural fibre- and synthetic fibre materials were generally small and occurred merely under heat stress conditions, where a pronounced reactivity of skin temperatures, skin moisture and heart rate could be observed testing the synthetic textile material. Being asked about thermal comfort, the subjects attributed their ratings to uncomfortable room climate conditions rather than to properties of the materials on which they were seated.

Postoperative textilomas: review of 14 cases.

BACKGROUND: Textile materials of surgical origin are found in the abdominal cavity in between 1/1300 and 1/1500 laparotomies, in spite of preventive measures. It is very difficult to ascertain the exact incidence due to the lack of descriptions in the literature. METHODS: Fourteen cases of postoperative foreign bodies or textilomas are reported. The cases were collected from two hospital centers between 1985 and 1997. RESULTS: There were 12 intra-abdominal cases, 1 thoracic and 1 paravertebral. In 8 (57.1%) diagnosis was made preoperatively by radiological techniques. The mortality rate was 14.2% with 2 deaths due to multiorganic failure in one case and sepsis in the other. Both patients were over 70, with malignant pathology. The morbidity rate was 21.4%, wall abscesses which evolved favorably being the most frequent cause of complications. CONCLUSIONS: Prevention of this complication is the best treatment. It is advisable to use textile material with radiopaque contrast, to count the pieces of material to be used and perform an X-ray before the laparotomy is closed specially in emergency (bleeding and trauma patients) because in these complex cases the possibility of material being left behind is more advisable.

Occupation and pancreatic cancer risk in Shanghai, China.

BACKGROUND: Any association between occupation and pancreatic cancer risk has not been conclusively demonstrated. A population-based case-control study was conducted to examine occupational risks of pancreatic cancer in Shanghai, China. METHODS: The study included 451 pancreatic cancer patients newly diagnosed in 1990-1993 and 1,552 controls randomly selected from Shanghai residents. Information on a lifetime job history and other factors was obtained in a face-to-face interview. RESULTS: Among men, an increased risk of pancreatic cancer was associated with employment as an electrician (OR = 7.5, CI = 2.6-21.8), and a positive trend in risk with increasing duration of employment was apparent (P for trend = 0.0003). Exposure to electric magnetic fields (EMF) as measured by a job exposure matrix also was associated with an increased risk among electricians. Threefold risks were observed for men with the highest level of intensity and for those with the highest probability of EMF exposure, although women with heavy EMF exposure did not experience increased risk. Among men, elevated risks also were found for metal workers (OR = 2.1, CI = 1.0-4.8); toolmakers (OR = 3.4, CI = 14-7.1); plumbers and welders (OR = 3.0, CI = 1.2-7.5); and glass manufacturers, potters, painters, and construction workers (OR = 2.6, CI = 1.1-6.3). Among women, textile workers experienced an increased risk (OR = 1.4, CI = 0.8-2.6). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that occupations associated with exposures to metal and textile dusts or certain chemicals may increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. The elevated risk among electricians may warrant further study to evaluate the possible role of EMF or other exposures.

In vitro and in vivo studies of a polyester arterial prosthesis with a warp-knitted sharkskin structure.

The present study was undertaken to assess the performance of a new knitted and gelatin-sealed polyester vascular graft that is believed to have greater dimensional stability than current commercial devices. Samples of the uncrimped, crimped, and sealed prosthesis were submitted to a series of in vitro and in vivo trials. Four commercial polyester knitted devices were included as controls for the in vitro tests, which included measurements of the textile and yarn structure and physical, chemical, and thermal properties of the graft, such as water permeability, dilatation, suture retention strength, melting point, and crystallinity index. The in vivo evaluation involved implanting the prototype device as a canine thoraco-abdominal bypass for periods ranging from 4 h to 1 year and assessing the biocompatibility, biofunctionality, and biostability of the explanted specimens. The warp-knitted structure of the prototype device has a unique sharkskin stitch that confers a superior dilatation resistance and suture retention strength to the prosthesis. The animal trial demonstrated that the gelatin ensures initial hemostasis without preclotting. The gelatin is bioresorbed during the first 2 weeks of implantation, which generates a temporary, moderate, acute inflammatory response. An external capsule of granulomatous tissue and an internal collagen capsule are formed between the first and third month. Analysis of the textile and physical properties of the explanted prostheses confirmed there was neither dilatation nor significant changes in structure or mechanical performance during implantation, thus confirming the biostability of this new prototype device and opening the way for clinical trials.

The study of byssinosis in China: a comprehensive report.

Cross-sectional studies were conducted during 1981-1983 among 861 textile workers in 3 cotton mills and 822 controls in 2 silk factories. Questionnaire and lung function tests were taken and inhalable dust concentrations were measured. Prevalence of byssinosis was 5.6%. Average dust concentrations were highest in carding rooms, 1.47-1.99 mg/m3. The correlations (r) between prevalence of byssinosis and dust concentrations was 0.64 (p less than 0.05). The prevalence of chronic bronchitis was 14.4% in cotton workers and 5.1% in controls (p less than 0.05). Acute FEV1 percent decrement (greater than 5%) was higher among cotton workers (32.1%) compared to controls (14.5%) (p less than 0.001). In one cotton blanket factory, the prevalence of byssinosis and chronic bronchitis was higher among workers in the high-dust work areas. Long-term effect studies included pulmonary function test among 173 cotton workers and 373 controls, retired 1-10 years, using the flow volume curve (FVC); chest X-rays of 140 pairs of cotton workers and controls with working tenures over 20 years; and examination of lobectomy specimens of 8 textile workers matched with 16 controls. In male cotton workers, only smokers had a prominent decrement of lung function indices, except FVC. For non-smoking females, there was no difference between the two groups. Additive effects were seen between smoking and dust exposure. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO) Pneumoconiosis Classification, the prevalence of abnormality (profusion greater than 1/0) was 4.3% and 8.7% in non-smoking controls and cotton workers. The interstitial changes on X-ray due to smoking would be much heavier. Additive effects also existed between smoking and dust exposures. No significant changes attributable to dust exposure were seen on pathological section of lobectomy specimens.

Occupation and bladder cancer in Utah.

The relationships between bladder cancer and occupation, industries, and occupational exposures in Utah were examined in a population-based, case-control study conducted between 1977 and 1983. Life-long occupational histories were obtained for 417 cases (332 men and 85 women) and 877 controls (685 men and 192 women). Although few positive findings emerged in this study, increased risks were detected among men for employment in the leather and textile industries which increased with duration of employment. The effects were most marked for employment beginning 45 or more years prior to interview (odds ratio [OR] for textiles = 1.92, confidence interval [CI] = 0.89-4.46; for leather OR = 2.95, CI = 0.63-13.76). Among men and women, increased risk was detected among clerical workers employed for less than 10 years (OR = 1.59, CI = 1.16-2.17) although the risk decreased with increased duration of employment (OR = 0.88, CI = 0.55-1.40 for greater than or equal to 10 years). A protective effect was seen among men and women for 10 or more years employment in professional, managerial, and technical occupations (OR = 0.68, CI = 0.50-0.92). Employment as a carpenter resulted in increased risk which increased with duration. Increased risk for bladder cancer was detected among carpenters who smoked but not among carpenters who never smoked. We used an occupation-exposure linkage system to identify workers exposed to aromatic amino compounds; such workers did not have increased risk of bladder cancer, although interaction between long-term exposure to aromatic amino compounds and smoking was detected. Interactions between smoking and other industrial or occupational exposures were not demonstrated, and for the most part, smoking did not confound the estimates of the bladder cancer-occupation relationships.

Bladder cancer and occupation in Shanghai, 1980-1984.

To investigate occupational determinants of bladder cancer in the urban area of Shanghai, occupation and industry information for 1,219 incident bladder cancer cases diagnosed during the period 1980 to 1984 were compared with 1982 census data on employment. Standardized incidence ratios (SIR) for bladder cancer were estimated for occupation and industry classifications. Significant excess risks were observed for plastic products workers (male: SIR = 432; female: SIR = 368); textile bleachers, dyers, and finishers (male: SIR = 169); metal refining and processing workers (male: SIR = 139; female: SIR = 197); petroleum refining workers (male: SIR = 2152); railway engine drivers and firemen (male: SIR = 683); and workers employed in industries of apparel and other textile products manufacturing (female: SIR = 204); paper processing (male: SIR = 146; female: SIR = 226); organic chemical manufacturing (male: SIR = 186); plastic product manufacturing (male: SIR = 218; female: SIR = 272); and metallurgy (male: SIR = 107; female: SIR = 561). This study indicates that many of the industries and occupations that are responsible for increased risk throughout the world are also associated with occupational bladder cancer in Shanghai.

Extended mortality follow-up among men and women in a U.S. furniture workers union.

The addition of 5 years of follow-up and over 411,000 person-years of observation to a cohort of 34,081 men and women employed in U.S. furniture and other related industries allowed the investigation of mortality patterns among women and minority races in addition to white men. A significant excess of pleural mesotheliomas occurred among white men (standardized mortality ratio [SMR] = 3.7, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.2-8.7) but could not be linked to a particular type of furniture manufacturing. SMRs for myeloid leukemia and chronic nephritis were elevated among white men employed in the wood furniture industry but were not statistically significant. Males in the black/other race categories in wood furniture plants showed nonsignificant mortality excesses for infectious diseases and cancers of the prostate and colon and rectum. Among white women employed in wood furniture plants, mortality was elevated for cancers of the pancreas and lung during the most recent follow-up period. In metal furniture plants, mortality was raised among men in both race groups for kidney cancer (black/other SMR = 8.0, 95% CI = 1.6-23.2; white SMR = 2.1, 95% CI = 0.4-6.2) and diabetes mellitus (black/other SMR = 2.2, 95% CI = 0.6-5.6; white SMR = 1.8, 95% CI = 0.7-3.9). Stomach cancer mortality was significantly elevated (SMR = 3.3, 95% CI = 1.3-6.8) among white men in metal furniture plants and was of the same magnitude over both the previous and the most recent follow-up periods. Among those working with textiles, SMRs were significantly elevated for leukemia (SMR = 6.1, 95% CI = 1.2-7.8) and cancers of the colon and rectum (SMR = 3.2, 95% CI = 1.3-4.5) for white women. Lung cancer mortality was increased for white men and women in textile operations, but SMRs were not statistically significant. SMRs for a number of other causes of death that were elevated at the end of the earlier follow-up period were not increased during the new follow-up period.

Drugs of abuse in a non-conventional sample; detection of methamphetamine and its main metabolite, amphetamine in abusers' clothes by HPLC with UV and fluorescence detection.

In this paper, we report the detection of methamphetamine and its major metabolite, amphetamine, in garments belong to known-abusers. These compounds were extracted from the textile using a mixture of chloroform:propan-2-ol (3:1, v/v), derivatized with 4-(4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl) benzoyl chloride and separated using a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. The derivatives were detected by measuring either fluorescence at 440 nm or absorbance at 330 nm. By using 1-methyl-3-phenyl propylamine as an internal standard, calibration curves of spiked textile samples were linear over a wide range with correlation coefficients of 0.997 or better. Detection limits at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 were less than or equal to 37.3 and 0.4 pg on column for the high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet and -fluorescence detection methods, respectively. Intra- and inter-day variations at high and low concentrations (n > or = 3) were < or =12.7%. The developed methods were successfully applied to the determination of methamphetamine and amphetamine in clothes samples belong to abusers.

Antifungal and antibacterial properties of a silver-loaded cellulosic fiber.

The skin is the interface between the body and the environment. Each skin type has a specific skin physiology and is more or less adapted for protection against multiple stress factors. Textiles on the other hand are the tissues with the longest contact to the human skin. They play a critical role especially in skin conditions with an increased rate of bacterial and fungal infections like atopic dermatitis and hyperhidrosis, and in diabetic patients and aged skin. The present study demonstrates the antifungal and antibacterial effects of SeaCell Active in an in vitro test system against Candida albicans (DSM 11225), Candida tropicalis (ATCC 1169), and Candida krusei (ATCC 6258). Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of fibers with different amounts of SeaCell Active fibers in a dose-dependent manner against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 22923) and Escherichia coli (ATCC 35218) could be demonstrated. If this fiber seems to be suited for bioactive textiles in specific anatomical regions and skin conditions with a susceptibility for fungal and bacterial infections due to Candida species, namely Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, must be examined by means of further investigations, especially in vivo tests in human, considering allergic and toxic effects of the fiber.
