Breastfeeding, work and women's health among Thai women in Chiang Mai.

Reconciling the conflicting rights and demands of women's productive and reproductive roles poses an increasing challenge to health policy formulation. This article derives from a combined qualitative and quantitative study conducted in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It discusses situations and difficulties relevant to the health of employed women who breastfed their infants. Three hundred and thirteen employed women were interviewed to explore their experiences as mothers, particularly their attempts to balance the demands of work and breastfeeding. The findings demonstrate the stresses and conflicts in combining breastfeeding with work that can affect both physical and emotional health. Some women developed negative feelings. Exhaustion or fatigue, lack of self care and not eating properly were the common physical problems reported by women in this study.

Laparoscopic anatomy of the equine abdomen.

Laparoscopy was performed on 6 horses (2 mares, 2 geldings, 2 stallions) to determine the normal laparoscopic anatomy of the equine abdomen. After withholding feed for 36 hours, horses were examined from the left and right paralumbar fossae, and the visceral anatomic structures were recorded by videotape and photography. One mare developed emphysema located subcutaneously at the primary laparoscopic portal; otherwise, there were no complications. The anatomic structures of diagnostic importance that were observed in the left half of the abdomen were the hepatic duct; left lateral and quadrate lobes of the liver; stomach; spleen; left kidney with the associated nephrosplenic ligament; segments of jejunum, descending colon, and ascending colon; left side of the male and female reproductive tracts; urinary bladder; vaginal ring; and mesorchium. Important structures observed in the right side of the abdomen were portions of the common hepatic duct; left lateral, quadrate, and right lobes of the liver; caudate process of the liver; stomach; duodenum; right dorsal colon, epiploic foramen; omental bursa; right kidney; base of the cecum; segments of jejunum, descending colon, and ascending colon; urinary bladder; right half of the male and female reproductive tracts; and rectum.

[Mnestic defect characteristics in lesions of the left and right cerebral hemispheres].

The report contains some results of an experimental psychological study of memory in 144 patients with lesions of the right and left temporal lobes and in 25 patients with parkinsonism, who had undergone stereotaxic operations on the nuclear structures of the thalamus for dominant and subdominant speech of the brain hemisphere. For control purposes 88 normals were studied. The achieved results were subjected to a statistical and correlational analysis done on a computer "Minsk-20". The results of such studies demonstrated certain differences in these groups. These differences were expressed both in a quantitative character of reproduction and in a qualitative structure in the memory defect, which was connected with a different representation of correlational bonds between the indices of reproduction as well as with the role of the right and left temporal lobes in the formation of memory dependence on the probability prognosis.

[Assessment on pathophysiological indexes of acute lung injury induced by lipopolysaccharide in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To observe and evaluate the pathophysiological indexes of acute lung injury (ALI) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in rats. METHODS: Thirty-three Wistar rats were randomly divided into normal control group and experiment group. Respiratory rate , mortality, arterial blood gases, compliance and wet weight of right lung/body weight ratio, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were determined 2, 4 and 6 hours after injection of LPS or normal saline in both groups. RESULTS: In the experiment group, the following changes were found. Arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO(2)) was reduced to 69.18 mm Hg (1 mm Hg=0.133 kPa), marked blood stasis, and edema in lung tissues could be grossly seen and pathological examination showed that there was a large number of inflammation cell infiltration and edema in interstitial spaces with disappearance of normal construction of alveolar. There was also dilatation of capillaries with congestion and adherent leukocytes. Furthermore, compliance was decreased to 47% of the normal value, and wet weight of right lung/body weight ratio increased to 137% of the normal value. Blood TNF-alpha level increased markedly in serum and BALF. CONCLUSION: Specific pathological changes and decreased PaO(2) over 30% of the baseline value are the main signs of successful reproduction of ALI model in rats. Compliance and weight of right lung/body weight value can also reflect the status of ALI as helpful indexes.

The regulation of assisted reproductive technology: a comparative study of permissive and prescriptive laws and policies.

A specific statute governing assisted reproduction is one way to regulate assisted reproduction. However, what type of statute is best suited to an area of medicine that is subject to rapid technological advances and also affects human rights and interests? What are the strengths and weaknesses of a permissive model of regulation compared to a prescriptive model of regulation? This article examines the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 (UK) and the Infertility Treatment Act 1995 (Vic) in the context of eligibility for infertility treatment and the roles played by the United Kingdom Human Fertilisation Embryology Authority and the Victorian Infertility Treatment Authority.
