Multivariate analysis of limb long bone growth during the human prenatal period.

Prenatal development of the human limb bones (humerus, ulna, radius, femur, tibia, fibula) was studied. Cross-sectional data, consisting of 21 anthropometric measures of these bones were collected from 122 Japanese fetuses between the gestational ages of 18 and 40 weeks. Principal component analysis was applied to the data to provide multivariate assessments of morphological patterning among the variables. Three orthogonal components that accounted for 94.2% of the overall sample variation were extracted. The first component accounted for 88.2% of the variation and represented an axis of overall body size that was dependent on gestational age. The second and third components both reflected a trend in shape involving the cartilaginous parts of the humerus and femur. The findings indicated that different growth factors existed between the ossified and cartilaginous parts of fetal long bones. Multivariate allometric coefficients were extracted from the first principal component. The variables that were related to the construction of the articulate showed positive allometry, and the central widths of the diaphysis showed negative allometry compared with total size. In prenatal skeleton, certain shape changes are functionally linked to and required by changes in body size. A comparison among the coefficients of long bone length revealed that lower limb bones grew faster than upper limb bones during the period under study here. Allometric coefficients were equivalent among bones within a limb, whereas homologous bones in the upper and lower limb grew at different rates.

An orthogonal factor solution for the receptive speech scale of the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery.

Previous principal components factor analyses with oblique rotation to simple structure have produced widely disparate results for the Receptive Speech Scale of the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Battery (LNNB). Four of six scales based on the second factor solution lack internal consistency. A new principal components factor solution was computed with Varimax orthogonal rotation to simple structure for the current study. Three factors emerged that matched the strongest factors of the previous factor solutions closely. Internal consistency of the obtained factors was satisfactory. Theoretical implications and issues for clinical application were discussed.

Evidence at hand: Diversity, functional implications, and locomotor prediction in intrinsic hand proportions of diprotodontian marsupials.

Knowledge about the diversity, locomotor adaptations, and evolution of the marsupial forelimb is limited, resulting in an underrepresentation of marsupials in comparative anatomical literature on mammalian forelimb anatomy. This study investigated hand proportions in the diverse marsupial order Diprotodontia. Fifty-two measurements of 95 specimens representing 47 species, as well as 6 non-diprotodontian specimens, were explored using principal components analysis (PCA). Bootstrapping was used to assess the reliability of the loadings. Phylogenetically independent contrasts and phylogenetic ANOVA were used to test for correlation with size and functional adaptation of forelimbs for locomotor habit, scored as arboreal vs. terrestrial. Analysis of first principal component (PC1) scores revealed significant differences between arboreal and terrestrial species, and was related to relative slenderness of their phalangeal elements. Both locomotor groups displayed allometry along PC1 scores, but with different intercepts such that PC1 discriminated between the two locomotor habits almost completely. PC2 separated some higher-level clades and burrowing species. Analysis of locomotor predictors commonly applied by palaeontologists indicates that ratios between proximal and intermediate phalanges were unsuitable as predictors of arboreality/terrestriality, but the phalangeal index was more effective. From PCA results, a phalangeal slenderness ratio was developed which proved to be a useful discriminator, suggesting that a single unallocated phalanx can be used for an impression of locomotor mode in fossils. Most Diprotodontia are laterally paraxonic or ectaxonic, with the exception of digging species whose hands are medially paraxonic. Our results complement those of studies on placental mammals, suggesting that the demands of arboreality, terrestriality, or frequent digging on intrinsic hand proportions are met with similar anatomical adaptations in marsupials.

Measuring fruit and vegetable preferences among 4th- and 5th-grade students.

BACKGROUND: Achievement of the nation's Year 2000 fruit and vegetable goal of five or more daily servings may relate to children's preferences for fruits and vegetables. There are, however, no easily administered instruments for measuring preferences for fruits and vegetables among children. METHODS: An initial questionnaire systematically varied preparation methods after focus group discussions had indicated that this had an impact on fruit and vegetable preferences. The three-part questionnaire (fruits, vegetables, fruit and/or vegetable snacks) was classroom administered. Internal consistencies and test-retest reliabilities were acceptable. Principal components analyses, however, revealed food-specific rather than preparation factors; thus, preparation was eliminated from a revised questionnaire. RESULTS: Repeat classroom administration of the revised questionnaire yielded acceptable internal consistencies and test-retest reliabilities. Preferences were higher for fruits than vegetables. Principal components analyses indicated single fruit and vegetable factors and a two-factor solution for snacks (vegetables, fruits). Pearson correlations between preferences and consumption were significant, but accounted for only a small fraction of the variance. Correlations between fruit exposure and preferences, and between vegetable exposure and preferences were 0.55 and 0.51, respectively. CONCLUSION: The revised questionnaire provides a reliable, valid, and simple tool for assessing fruit and vegetable preferences of 4th- and 5th-grade students. The relationship between these preferences and actual consumption is weak; however, making fruits and vegetables more available may enhance preferences.

The SIIR index--a non-linear combination of waveform size and irregularity parameters for classification of motor unit potentials.

OBJECTIVE: In clinical electromyography, motor unit potential (MUP) size is used to indicate the myo- or neurogenic origin of the pathological process, whereas the irregularity of MUP shape is considered not useful in this respect. The aim of the present study was to find a method to improve classification of MUPs using a combined analysis of the size and irregularity of the potential. METHODS: The records with at least 20% of irregular potentials from 14 healthy subjects and 34 patients were analysed. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was applied in the analysis of data to find a linear function combining the size and the irregularity of a MUP. RESULTS: The linear combination of size and irregularity measures, i.e. size index (SI) and irregularity coefficient (IR) obtained using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) did not increase the discriminating ability in comparison to SI. We have defined a non-linear function of the SI and IR called SIIR, which modifies SI values for irregular potentials only. Its discriminating ability is higher than that of SI. CONCLUSIONS: By combined assessment of the size of a MUP and its irregularity, the differentiation between neurogenic and myopathic potentials could be considerably improved. SIGNIFICANCE: The proposed coefficient SIIR seems to be more discriminating than others presently used. When applied in clinical studies it may be useful in the evaluation of confusing, atypical motor unit potentials.

Lip shape and position in Class II division 2 malocclusion.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether differences exist in the shape and position of the lips between Class II division 2 and Class I malocclusions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lateral cephalometric radiographs of subjects with Class II division 2 (n = 30) and Class I (n = 30) incisor relationships were scanned at 300 dpi to produce digital images. These were subsequently digitized in random order. Twenty-one landmarks characterizing the upper and lower lips and the maxillary and mandibular central incisors were digitized. Procrustes algorithms optimally superimposed the landmark configurations to standardize size, location, and orientation. Discriminant analysis of the principal components of shape determined the differences between the Class II division 2 and Class I groups. RESULTS: The shape and position of the upper and lower lips differed significantly between the Class II division 2 group and the Class I group (P < .001). Principal component (PC) 1 (46% of the variance) involved an increase in the thickness of the upper and lower lips in the Class II division 2 group. PC2 (11% of the variance) was characterized by a relatively higher lip line in the Class II division 2 group. CONCLUSIONS: The shape and position of the lips differ between Class II division 2 and Class I malocclusions.

Convergence of sampling in protein simulations.

With molecular dynamics protein dynamics can be simulated in atomic detail. Current computers are not fast enough to probe all available conformations, but fluctuations around one conformation can be sampled to a reasonable extent. The motions with the largest fluctuations can be filtered out of a simulation using covariance or principal component analysis. A problem with this analysis is that random diffusion can appear as correlated motion. An analysis is presented of how long a simulation should be to obtain relevant results for global motions. The analysis reveals that the cosine content of the principal components is a good indicator for bad sampling.

Bone formers: osteophyte and enthesophyte formation are positively associated.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that enthesophyte formation and osteophyte growth are positively associated and to look for associations between bone formation at different sites on the skeleton so that a simple measure of bone formation could be derived. METHODS: Visual examination of 337 adult skeletons. All common sites of either enthesophyte or osteophyte formation were inspected by a single observer who graded bone formation at these sites on a 0-3 scale. The total score for each feature was divided by the number of sites examined to derive an enthesophyte and an osteophyte score. Cronbach's alpha and principal components analysis were used to identify groupings. RESULTS: Enthesophyte formation was associated with gender (M > F) and age. There was a positive correlation between enthesophytes and osteophytes (r = 0.65, 95% confidence interval, 0.58 to 0.71) which remained after correction for age and gender. Principal components analysis indicated four different groupings of enthesophyte formation. By choosing one site from each group a simple index of total skeletal bone formation could be derived. CONCLUSIONS: Osteophytes and enthesophytes are associated, such that a proportion of the population can be classified as "bone formers". Enthesophyte groupings provide some clues to aetiopathogenesis. Bone formation should be investigated as a possible determinant of the heterogeneity of outcome and of treatment responses in common musculoskeletal disorders.

Reassessment of the PAS patterns in uveal melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Previous work has highlighted the prognostic importance of patterns of periodic acid Schiff (PAS) staining (the Folberg patterns) in uveal melanoma. These patterns have been ascribed to blood vessels but the patterns are different from those seen with other staining techniques for blood vessels. It has recently been shown that microvessel density is the dominant prognostic factor in uveal melanoma. This study reinvestigates the nature and significance of the PAS patterns. METHODS: The PAS patterns were compared with the patterns seen with conventional connective tissue stains and with the patterns seen in sections stained for the presence of blood vessels (by immunohistochemistry for factor VIII related antigen). The PAS patterns were determined on a panel of 117 cases of uveal melanoma. The prognostic significance of each of these patterns was determined and, as more than one pattern can exist in a tumour, principal components analysis was performed to determine the number of underlying factors. RESULTS: Comparison of the PAS patterns with other stains demonstrates that they are based on connective tissue including fibrovascular tissue. Five of the nine PAS patterns carried prognostic significance on univariate analysis. Principal components analysis suggested that these patterns represented three underlying factors, which were tentatively identified as representing disordered growth (factor 1), emergence of rapidly growing subclones (factor 2), and section orientation (factor 3). CONCLUSIONS: The PAS patterns are based on fibrovascular tissue and can be ascribed to three underlying factors. The first two of these factors carried prognostic significance and the first (disordered growth) retained independent prognostic significance in a multivariate Cox model which included microvessel density and tumour size.

Using recursive partitioning analysis to evaluate compound selection methods.

The design and analysis of a screening set for high throughput screening is complex. We examine three statistical strategies for compound selection, random, clustering, and space-filling. We examine two types of chemical descriptors, BCUTs and principal components of Dragon Constitutional descriptors. Based on the predictive power of multiple tree recursive partitioning, we reached the following tentative conclusions. Random designs appear to be as good as clustering and space-filling designs. For analysis, BCUTs appear to be better than principal components scores based upon Constitutional Descriptors. We confirm previous results that model-based selection of compounds can lead to improved screening hit rates.

[Treatment and temperature series study for use in public health. The case of Castilla-La Mancha, Spain].

BACKGROUND: Numerous articles relate atmospheric variables to health indicators. In large regions, such as Castilla-La Mancha, it may be necessary to divide the region into areas in terms of the atmospheric variables available by selecting a representative weather station for each zone. This article focuses on analyzing the daily temperature data from numerous Castilla La Mancha observatories and reducing the number thereof to a few representative stations for being used in studies relating atmospheric variables to health indicators in this region. METHODS: Castilla-La Mancha weather stations were selected in terms of the number of years available and missing data. After filling in the gaps in the selected series, to detect any possible discontinuities and to homogenize the series, the daily temperature data is used in hierarchical cluster and factorial analyses by principal components. RESULTS: Factorial analyses extract one single factor by using the maximum, mean or minimum temperature series. For the maximum temperatures, this factor explains 93.45% of the variance, with an eigenvalue of 39.249. The "Compuesta" station in Toledo shows correlation coefficients in the principal components matrix of 0.987, 0.991 and 0.981 respectively for the maximum, mean and minimum temperature series. CONCLUSIONS: Castilla-La Mancha is an isoclimatic region in terms of the temperature, the "Compuesta" station in Toledo being selected as the representative station for the region for public health studies. The results afford the possibility of conducting studies broken down into small units such as the provinces, with the stations in the government capitals as a reference.

Psychometric characteristics of the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Inventory in South Africa.

The psychometric properties of the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Inventory are reported, based on responses of 200 (88 men and 112 women) elementary science teachers in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Previous factor analytic studies of this inventory have identified a two-factor solution but this has not been investigated in a South African context. The reliability estimated as internal consistency (Cronbach alpha) was .87. Principal components analysis with varimax rotation indicated a two-factor solution accounting for 38.1% of variance, with Cronbach alphas of .92 and .73 for the Personal Science Teaching Efficacy Belief subscale (Factor 1) and the Science Teaching Outcome Expectancy subscale (Factor 2), respectively. Principal components analysis of the Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Inventory yielded two conceptually meaningful components, similar to those reported in literature. Although one item did not meet the conditions for acceptance, this inventory may be useful in understanding science teachers' efficacy beliefs in South Africa. These particular findings are preliminary but hopeful. Studies using confirmatory analysis to address the cross-national invariance of this inventory are needed.

Fuel use in hawkmoth (Amphion floridensis) flight muscle: enzyme activities and flux rates.

The fuels used by the hawkmoth Amphion floridensis to power flight are determined by nectar-feeding, with fed moths using primarily carbohydrate and unfed moths using primarily fat. To investigate the metabolic pathways underlying fuel-use flexibility in this species, we measured the maximal activities of several key metabolic enzymes in the flight muscle of fed and unfed individuals, for which metabolic rates and fuel utilization had been previously determined. Hexokinase (HK) and phosphofructokinase (PFK) occur at high activities and, during carbohydrate-fueled flight, are estimated to operate at fractional velocities comparable to those of exclusively carbohydrate-utilizing insects. Females exhibited higher glycolytic enzyme activities than did males, and males regulated PFK activity according to nectar feeding. Although beta-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase (HOAD) was found at high activities, carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT) was not detectable, suggesting that fatty acids may be utilized via a carnitine-independent pathway during flight. Principal component analysis revealed a tendency for the activities of citrate synthase, HK, PFK, and HOAD to be positively correlated among individuals, as well as a lesser tendency for the activities of glycolytic vs. mitochondrial enzymes to be negatively correlated with each other. However, the principal components did not correlate with variation in either oxygen consumption rate or fuel use in vivo, suggesting that variation in enzyme concentration did not determine differences among individuals in metabolic performance during flight. Monitoring of iodinated X-ray contrast media in surface water.

A monitoring programme was carried out in order to determine iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) in the River Danube and to investigate the raw water quality for drinking water production at Langenau waterworks. The study revealed that the maximum concentrations of ICM (over 500 ng l(-1) for diatrizoic acid and iopamidol) were found in 2h-composite samples taken from the downstream of the Ulm/Neu-Ulm metropolitan area. By means of a concentration profile over one month the highest ICM concentrations were observed on weekdays. The extended data evaluation with principal component analysis shows that the upstream and downstream samples had different pattern of variations in ICM concentration and also demonstrates a clear change in ICM composition by the discharge of municipal wastewater. In addition to load profiles of ICM, time-dependent plots of principal component 1 exhibited peaks, indicating a short-term discharge of ICM between the two sampling sites. In conclusion, a point source for ICM contamination between the sampling sites in Ulm upstream and Leipheim downstream seems to be the reasonable explanation for peak ICM concentrations. Due to the observed high variations of ICM concentrations in river, the evaluation of natural waters by means of a single analysis is not representative.

New molecular descriptors based on local properties at the molecular surface and a boiling-point model derived from them.

New molecular descriptors based on statistical descriptions of the local ionization potential, local electron affinity, and the local polarizability at the surface of the molecule are proposed. The significance of these descriptors has been tested by calculating them for the Maybridge database in addition to our set of 26 descriptors reported previously. The new descriptors show little correlation with those already in use. Furthermore, the principal components of the extended set of descriptors for the Maybridge data show that especially the descriptors based on the local electron affinity extend the variance in our set of descriptors, which we have previously shown to be relevant to physical properties. The first nine principal components are shown to be most significant. As an example of the usefulness of the new descriptors, we have set up a QSPR model for boiling points using both the old and new descriptors.

Influence of water pressure on the final quality of arabica espresso coffee. Application of multivariate analysis.

Water pressure is one of the most important factors which influence the final quality of espresso coffee (EC). However, few studies dealing with this issue have been found. The aim of this work was to study the effect of water pressure on the final quality of Arabica ECs as well as to classify ECs prepared at different pressures (7, 9, and 11 atm) according to their physicochemical and sensory characteristics, key odorants, by means of multivariate analysis. Statistically, principal component 1 (PC1) separated ECs prepared at 7 and 9 atm from ECs prepared at 11 atm and included the main foam and taste characteristics as well as some key odorants and flavor compounds. ECs prepared at 7 and 9 atm were separated by principal component 2 (PC2). Coffees prepared at 9 atm showed consistency of foam and a high percentage of key odorants related to freshness and fruity, malty, and buttery flavors. A simple discriminate function was obtained by discriminate analysis, allowing the classification of ECs prepared at three pressures into their respective groups with a success rate of 100%.

Personality in proportion: a bipolar proportional scale for personality assessments and its consequences for trait structure.

Trait structures resulting from personality assessments on Likert scales are affected by the additive and multiplicative transformations implied in interval scaling and correlational analysis. The effect comes into view on selecting a plausible alternative scale. To this end, we propose a bipolar bounded scale ranging from -1 to +1 representing an underlying process in which the assessor would review and discount positive and negative behavioral instances of a trait. As an appropriate index of likeness between variables X and Y, we propose LXY = SigmaXY/N, the average of the raw scores cross products. Using this index, we carried out a raw scores principal component analysis on data consisting of 133 participants who had each been rated by 5 assessors including self on 914 items. Contrary to the Big-Five structure that was found in these data on standard analysis, the results showed a relatively large first principal component F1 and 2 very small ones, F2 and F3. The sizes LFF=SigmaF2/N, the averages of the squared component scores, were modest to small. It thus appears that the scale, bipolar proportional versus standard, has a profound impact on the size and structure of personality assessments. The dissimilarity remains on analyzing self-ratings rather than averaged (over the 5 assessors) ratings.

Topographic component (parallel factor) analysis of multichannel evoked potentials: practical issues in trilinear spatiotemporal decomposition.

We describe a substantive application of the trilinear topographic components/parallel factors model (TC/PARAFAC, due to Möcks/Harshman) to the decomposition of multichannel evoked potentials (MEP's). We provide practical guidelines and procedures for applying PARAFAC methodology to MEP decomposition. Specifically, we apply techniques of data preprocessing, orthogonality constraints, and validation of solutions in a complete TC analysis, for the first time using actual MEP data. The TC model is shown to be superior to the traditional bilinear principal components model in terms of data reduction, confirming the advantage of the TC model's added assumptions. The model is then shown to provide a unique spatiotemporal decomposition that is reproducible in different subject groups. The components are shown to be consistent with spatial/temporal features evident in the data, except for an artificial component resulting from latency jitter. Subject scores on this component are shown to reflect peak latencies in the data, suggesting a new aspect to statistical analyses based on subject scores. In general, the results support the conclusion that the TC model is a promising alternative to principal components for data reduction and analysis of MEP's.
