A serological survey of leptospirosis in sheep in Chile.

In order to investigate exposure to Leptospira spp. in sheep in the Xth Region in the south of Chile, 629 ovine serum samples were collected from 11 convenience selected sheep farms, using within farm random sampling. The sera collected were examined for antibodies to the following serovars; icterohaemorrhagiae, autumnalis, hardjo, pomona, ballum, and canicola, using the Microscopic Agglutination Test. Ten out of eleven flocks had sheep which were seropositive for at least one Leptospira spp. Positive tests, the majority at low titres, were obtained from 36/629 (5.7%) of all the serum samples tested. The most frequently detected serovars were, in descending order: icterohaemorrhagiae, autumnalis and hardjo. The greatest proportion of positive samples came from sheep which were over 30 months old.

Clinical, bacteriologic and histopathologic studies on induced leptospirosis in stray dog pups.

Eighteen 8-12 days old stray dog (canis familiaris mongrel) pups of either sex; 6 pups each in test groups and control group were infected with lepotspiral serovars autumnalis and canicola. The experimental animals, clinical, bacteriologic and histopathologic kinetics were observed. Both the serovars had evoked typical clinical manifestations. Leptospiraemia could be demonstratedin between the post inoculation (PI) days 1 & 5. Leptospiruria commensed in between the PI days 5 & 7 and lasted throughout the study period. Histopathologic study did not reveal any marked pathologic changes except hydropic changes in the liver of both the test groups.

Leptospirosis in the causation of hepato-renal syndrome in and around Pune.

Fifty cases of hepato-renal dysfunction of unknown etiology were studied over a two-year period. Urine samples were examined microscopically and cultured for Leptospira. Serum samples were examined for antibodies against Leptospira by the Macroscopic slide agglutination test (MSAT). Seventeen out of fifty patients (34%) showed evidence of Leptospiral infection by at least two diagnostic techniques used. 15/17 i.e. 88.2% were positive by dark ground microscopy, 7/17 were diagnosed by culture technique and 16/17 i.e. 94% were confirmed by serology. There was a good correlation between Microscopic agglutination test (MAT) and MSAT. Thus Leptospires seem to play a major role in the causation of hepato-renal dysfunction in and around Pune, Maharashtra.

The first case of leptospirosis in the Zadar area.

In September 1999, a 56-year-old butcher was admitted to the General Hospital in Zadar because of fever, headache, severe pain in the calf muscles and thighs, conjunctivitis, rash, hepatomegaly and jaundice. The initial diagnosis was septic shock, and the patient was admitted to the internal medicine ward. Microscopic agglutination test showed a fourfold rise of antibodies to Leptospira sejroe in the three serum samples. These serologic findings and laboratory findings of leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, increased serum aminotransferases, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine, proteinuria and leukocyturia indicated that Leptospira sejroe was the etiologic agent of the disease in the patient presented.
