This article provides a review of some of the work done in the area of knowledge-based systems for strategic planning. Since 1985, with the founding of the Center for Knowledge-based Systems for Business Management, the project has focused on developing knowledge-based systems (KBS) based on these models. In addition, the project also involves developing a variety of computer and non-computer methods and techniques for assisting both technical and non-technical managers and individuals to do decision modelling and KBS development. This paper presents a summary of one segment of the project: a description of integrative groupware useful in strategic planning. The work described here is part of an ongoing research project. As part of this project, for example, over 200 non-technical and technical business managers, most of them working full-time during the project, developed over 160 KBS prototype systems in conjunction with MBA course in strategic planning and management decision making. Based on replies to a survey of this test group, 28 per cent of the survey respondents reported their KBS were used at work, 21 per cent reportedly received promotions, pay rises or new jobs based on their KBS development work, and 12 per cent reported their work led to participation in other KBS development projects at work. All but two of the survey respondents reported that their work on the KBS development project led to a substantial increase in their job knowledge or performance.
A catalogue of physical findings from patients on a geriatric ward run by a Family Practice Centre was developed for the use of both medical educators and students. The collection and organization of the data is described, as well as the ethical problems involved. Advantages to both teachers and students are discussed with respect to the teaching of physical diagnosis. An added benefit of producing and using a catalogue of this nature could be the changing of negative attitudes towards the geriatric patient.
INTRODUCTION: CISMeF is a Quality Controlled Health Gateway using a terminology based on the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) thesaurus that displays medical specialties (metaterms) and the relationships existing between them and MeSH terms. OBJECTIVE: The need to classify the resources within the catalogue has led us to combine this type of semantic information with domain expert knowledge for health resources categorization purposes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A two-step categorization process consisting of mapping resource keywords to CISMeF metaterms and ranking metaterms by decreasing coverage in the resource has been developed. We evaluate this algorithm on a random set of 123 resources extracted from the CISMeF catalogue. Our gold standard for this evaluation is the manual classification provided by a domain expert, viz. a librarian of the team. RESULTS: The CISMeF algorithm shows 81% precision and 93% recall, and 62% of the resources were assigned a "fully relevant" or "fairly relevant" categorization according to strict standards. DISCUSSION: A thorough analysis of the results has enabled us to find gaps in the knowledge modeling of the CISMeF terminology. The necessary adjustments having been made, the algorithm is currently used in CISMeF for resource categorization.
The Urban Regeneration and the Environment Research Programme (URGENT) required a system for cataloguing its datasets and enabling its scientific community to discover what data were available to it. This community was multidisciplinary in nature and therefore needed a range of facilities for searching. Of particular importance were facilities to help those unfamiliar with specialist terminology. To meet these needs, four applications were designed and developed: a Metadata Capture Tool for describing datasets in compliance with the National Geospatial Data Framework (NGDF) standard, a Term Entry Tool for creating an ISO compliant thesaurus, a Thesaurus Builder for merging thesauri and a Search Tool. To encourage users to help in cataloguing data, the capture tools were written as stand alone applications, which users could keep and use to build their own metadatabases. The tools contained export and import facilities that allowed the URGENT Data Centre to build a central database and publish it upon the web. During the development work, it was found necessary to extend the NGDF standard as it could not adequately describe time variant or 3-D atmospheric datasets. The four applications met their design objectives. However, a number of ergonomic issues will need to be addressed if the system is to meet the needs of the much larger up coming programmes. The main challenges will be moving from the NGDF standard to the ISO standard, hence bringing the work into line with the recommendations of the INSPIRE Project, and merging the metadatabase with the scientific database, which enable metadata maintenance to be semi-automated.
Nurses have a professional responsibility, both morally and ethically, to provide the most current and informed patient care possible. Nurses should maintain competence in nursing, exercise informed judgment, participate in activities that contribute to the ongoing development of their profession's body of knowledge, and participate in their profession's efforts to implement and improve standards of nursing care. Nurses should stay current with new information and share this information with coworkers to help disseminate new knowledge. Such practices help advance both the body of knowledge for perioperative nursing and the profession of nursing. Nurses are encouraged to make at least two visits each year to the library. During this time, they can take the opportunity to review current periodicals, recent publications, do a CINAHL search, and browse the Internet. Nurses need to be familiar with library resources, so go to the library. Share your findings with colleagues and students. Acquire the information-seeking skills that will best serve you and your patients in the twenty-first century.

The Internet is not designed for efficient information retrieval. Searchers experience difficulties when trying to find information quickly. Once they find the information, they often cannot assess the validity of the information or its origin. Various Internet search engines and information retrieval systems try to facilitate this process to make the searching more efficient. Searchers use these services, which are usually free, to satisfy their information needs. Knowing when to use which search engine and how to use it is crucial to finding the right information in a timely fashion.

During the 18th century, mineralogy constituted an integral part of natural history, sharing the concerns of botany and zoology over collection and classification. In Paris, many people owned private mineral collections, but these have been largely neglected by historians. Here, I examine the place of private collections in the history of mineralogy, arguing that they contributed socially, economically and intellectually to the field in a period before the dominance of the large national collection. I also show how the interests of private collectors diverged from those of the curators of public collections, particularly following the French Revolution.
