A questionnaire survey was conducted on 28-55 items of daily living abilities (DLA) linked to 13 basic vocational competencies such as memory, learning, planning, judgement, muscular power and concentration covering a total of 505 non-disabled blue collar male workers aged 45 and over. Results of the survey were as follows, (1) The 457 subjects were grouped into five groups ranging from normal to unsound groups according to the degree of DLA; (2) The reduction of DLA has directionality to two factors, memory and muscular power; (3) DLA provide clues for aging; (4) Among basic vocational competencies, muscular power showed the highest performance with a small standard deviation, while concentration scored low points with a large standard deviation (p < .05); (5) No age difference was found in planning ability, coordination, muscular power, physical tolerance, manual dexterity, and sense of equilibrium, while subjects aged 65 or over showed significantly low figures for learning ability, agility and concentration (p < .05); Since the findings showed various characteristics of vocational competencies and the aging process precisely in blue collar workers aged 45 and over, we assumed that the DLA survey is one of the alternatives for evaluating workers vocational competencies.
BACKGROUND: The University of Pittsburgh was awarded a grant by the National Library of Medicine to study the education and training needs of present and future medical librarians and health information specialists through a collaboration of the university's School of Information Sciences and Health Sciences Library System. Goals and objectives for the year-long project included (1) assessment of education and training needs of medical librarians, (2) development of a master of library science curriculum and an internship program that would prepare graduates to take leadership roles in medical librarianship or information management, (3) development of continuing education programs for medical librarians in different formats, and (4) development of targeted recruitment efforts to attract minority group members and individuals with undergraduate science majors. The importance of this project, present practice, and success factors for programs seeking excellence in the preparation of health sciences information professionals are reviewed. A needs assessment involving a national advisory panel and a follow-up study of individuals who have participated in previous specialized training programs in health sciences information, compared with a peer group of medical librarians who did not participate in such programs, is described. This paper presents the goals and objectives of the project, describes the methods used, and outlines a curriculum, continuing education initiatives, and recruitment activities.

Although the majority of physicians entering residency training in Canada will enjoy fulfilling careers in their chosen specialty, today's postgraduate training system has its critics. Among them are the new graduates who are not satisfied with the residency positions offered to them and practising physicians who would like to re-enter the system to train in a new specialty but find themselves locked out.

230 juveniles were examined by means of the box of constructional blocks-in conformity with Huth -, and the results were analysed statistically in regard of sex, age, school year, and school certificates. Concerning working speed and the marks for technical conception, there is a significant difference between girls and boys. On an average, boys achieved better results than girls. These results of the performance variables have mainly been influenced by the school year that the juvenile attended at the date of these tests. Irrespectively of their sex, applicants for vocational training who had attended 10 forms achieved significantly better results than pupils of the 9th form. The test is useful for examinations concerning the aptitude-diagnostic.
The present article gives an outline of vocational rehabilitation in the Federal Republic of Germany from the perspective of the statutory accident insurance scheme. Termed "Berufshilfe", occupational assistance, the services and benefits provided under the scheme also encompass elements of medical and social rehabilitation of persons who have incurred an industrial injury or occupational disease. Given the scheme's comprehensive catalog of benefits and services, a multitude of possibilities result for assistance to eligible workers and their relatives, which are illustrated by examples. Central to the presentation is the work of the "Berufshelfer", the accident insurance agency's case manager for vocational rehabilitation service provision. Along with competence of the accident insurance agency for medical, vocational and social rehabilitation, this case manager is the point of contact for all those involved in rehabilitation in the individual case, hence in particular for the individual affected, his or her relatives, physicians, rehabilitation facilities, employers as well as third parties, moreover being the point of liaison among these various parties and the administration. The primary objective of these entire efforts is to achieve lasting reintegration of people with physical or emotional disablement in employment, career, and society.

My patients are achieving a higher level of success, now that I have used these steps. My compensation is better than when, like a piano teacher, I was going to people's homes to give lessons. And because continence includes related health issues, I am doing the health education I have always enjoyed but seldom had time to do when working in acute care settings. Although this application dealt with urinary incontinence, the steps can be applied to many other health conditions and their management. What would you really like to do professionally? Write down everything you can think of, and circle the most likely, or use "right brain clustering," and you will be surprised what you can come up with. It might even be something you can get paid well for doing.
