[Influence of age and sex on the urinary excretion of total and non-dializable hydroxyproline].

Urinary excretion of total OHPr, an index of bone resorption, was evaluated in 68 normal subjects (25 males and 43 females) aged 19-83 years. In 49 of them non-dialyzable OHPr(ndOHPr), which reflects bone matrix formation, was also determined. Total urinary OHPr, expressed as mg/24 h, significantly decreased with advancing age in both sexes: however by means of multiple regression analysis no correlation was found after correction of OHPr behaviour for changes in creatinine clearance. On the contrary ndOHPr was inversely correlated with age (r = -0,56, p less than 0,001) even when creatinine clearance was held constant (p less than 0,05). The findings obtained seem to show that a decrease in osteogenetic activity is also responsible for the physiological ageing bone loss.

Effects of Ca and P levels in the feed on serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, hydroxyproline and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol levels, and on the ash content of the third metacarpal bone in pigs.

The material in the present study considered of 42 pigs. The pigs received different amounts of Ca and P in the feed. Observations were made on the blood serum Ca, P, AP, HP, and 25-OH-D3 levels, the ash content of the Mc III, and on the clinical behaviour of the pigs. The pigs were divided into 6 groups (3 X 6 Finnish Landrace and 3 X 8 Large White). The piglets used in each case were from the same sow, sired by the same boar, ensuring similar genetic backgrounds. The duration of the experiment was 85 to 100 days. The Ca and P contents of the feed were 1.24/ 1%, 0.41/0.49%, 0.48/0.76%, 1.3/0.7%, 0.41/0.74%, 0.44/1.83%. The declared content of D3 in the feed mixture was 2 000 IU/kg. At the end of the experiment, SCa levels were normal, but SP levels had risen in the groups fed 0.41/0.74% and 0.44/1.83%. SAP and SHP levels were normal. The 25-OH-D3 levels were within the same range for all groups investigated. The groups receiving low levels of Ca developed an osteodystrophia fibrosa, which, together with osteochondrosis, resulted in a leg weakness syndrome. The ash contents of the Mc III were lowest in the groups receiving a feed poor in Ca.

[Hydroxyproline in blood and urine in myocardial infarct].

The study of the dynamics of proteinbound blood plasma oxyproline concentration and oxyproline excretion with the urine in patients with myocardial infarction is reported. During the subacute period beginning from the 3rd to the 5th week of the disease an increase in the content of these metabolites in the blood and urine is observed. The time of the beginning and the end of this period depends on a number of factors: the depth and spread of necrosis focus, the presence of certain accompanying diseases and complications, peculiarities of the clinical course of the disease. The dynamics of the concentration of proteinbound blood oxyproline and oxyproline excretion with urine in myocardial infarction is regarded as a test that gives information about the rate and intensity of scar formation in myocardial infarction.

[Hydroxyproline in morning urine. A reliable parameter for bone turnover in childhood].

OH-P/Cr was measured in morning fasting urine specimens of 300 healthy subjects and of children with disorders of calcium metabolism receiving no diet. In healthy children the values were sex and age dependent reflecting the different height velocities. The OH-P excretion was not different in schoolchildren receiving a OH-P-poor diet for at least two days in comparison to subjects of the same age group with unrestricted diet. OH-P/Cr correlated well with serum alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity and decreased rapidly after a calcium load. OH-P/Cr and AP were elevated in patients with increased bone turnover (hyperparathyroidism and hypophosphatemic rickets). In contrast, the OH-P excretion was normal in children with permanent or transient isolated hyperphosphatasemia. In children with vitamin D deficiency rickets there was a further increase of OH-P/Cr in response to vitamin therapy, while the AP activity, which reflects osteoblastic activity, tended to fall. This indicates that the observed increment of the OH-P excretion in these children is due to a temporary resorption of osteoid caused by the increasing levels of vitamin D metabolites. It is concluded that the measurement of OH-P/Cr provides a useful tool of bone turnover in children, in that it makes complete 24 h-urine collections and a OH-P free diet unnecessary. In combination with other indices of calcium metabolism the determination of the OH-P ratio is considered to be a valuable measure for the diagnosis and follow-up of bone disorders.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
