Teaching recognition skills to improve products.

All 86 first year dental students in a Conservative Restorations course completed five sets of instructional tasks. Tasks followed a discrimination learning paradigm, a sequence based on the principal that recognition skills are a prerequisite for production skills. Recognition skill measures and production quality measures were collected for pre- and post-test Class 1 amalgam preparations. Significant improvement was found in three of the five recognition skill measures and in quality of production. Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that a measure of student agreement with faculty evaluations accounted for 46.3 percent of the variance in post-test production scores whereas traditional admissions measures accounted for less than 4 percent of the variance. Additionally, students who improved recognition skill showed a corresponding improvement in products. The paradigmatic teaching model appears to be valid for Class 1 cavity preparations.

[Electrosurgical device EKhBCh-25-1-C].

The outfit is intended for cutting, coagulation and microcoagulation of the biological tissue by high-frequency current during surgical interventions in stomatology. The outfit ensures smooth control of outlet power. It is fitted out with a timer for automatic time lag of electrosurgical exposure. The generator is triggered by pressing the pedal or push button of the electrode holder. The outfit is also equipped with a kit of instruments. A short technical specification of the outfit is given.

["Aachen 3-D-finger". Development of a 3-D-digitizer for use in dental, oral and maxillary treatment].

The "AACHEN 3D Finger" is a three-dimensional measuring system for use in all fields of dentistry. The system can equally as well be installed on a plane table, as fixed to the head of a patient. The measuring device is computer-assisted, and is able to localize, register and calculate any combination of points in the oral and maxillofacial area. The reference system can be changed at any time. The "AACHEN 3D Finger" can be used as a computer-a ded system in dentistry as well as in implantology or dental and maxillofacial surgery.

[General principles and applications of the laser].

This article defins the laser radiation, compares it with the sunlight and studies its production, describing the general principles of the laser. The different types of lasers are considered as well as their respectives applications which derive from the four ways of tissues interactions: photothermical, photochemical, photophysical and photobiological. A three laser system (CO2 laser, Helium-Neon laser and Argon laser) is proposed to the dental surgeon.

[Evaluation of cardiac function in dentists during professional activity].

In this study research was carried out a comparison between different dental situations by using a common parameter: myocardial oxygen consumption, accurately expressed in terms of cardiac exercise. Important increase in the previously specified parameter in dentists were provocated by dental extractions conducted on anxious patients. Tooth extractions undertaken on calm and cooperative patients determined an increase of cardiac exercise in dentists similar to those caused by amalgam restoration conducted on a manikin, but not in ergonomic work conditions. The situation, referred previously, resulted more stressing for the dentist, as regard to a similar restoration conducted, this time, in ergonomic work conditions. Amalgam restoration performed on calm and cooperative patients caused alterations of cardiac exercise as referred previously to those provocated by a similar restoration conducted on a manikin in ergonomic conditions. These findings show that work conditions and patients anxiety have a negative influence on the dentists' cardiovascular apparatus. The corrisponding poor modification of the oxygen consumption in the whole organism demonstrates that major part of cardiac exercise is dissipated by stress.

[Simulation with a pre-clinical training system. 2. Evaluation of the pre-clinical training system].

This study evaluated usefulness of the Pre-Clinical Training System. Undergraduate students and instructors at Higashi-Nippon-Gakuen University practiced class I composite resin restoration of the lower right first molar using the system. After the practice, they filled out questionnaires to evaluate the system. According to the results, this system proved useful for pre-clinical education though there is room for improvement.

Cotton roll isolation versus Vac-Ejector isolation.

A visible-light-cured, white pit-and-fissure sealant was applied to 523 teeth in school children using either cotton rolls or a VacEjector for isolation. After a minimum of six months, the patients were recalled and the retention of the sealants was evaluated. No significant difference in sealant retention was found between the two isolation methods.

[Theory and practice of the application of rubber dam].

The application of Kofferdam offers a series of advantages for patients and medical personnel which especially speak well for an application in the preserving stomatology. Among other things, these advantages are: protection from aspiration, protection from infections, provision of an aseptic working place, keeping the soft tissues away, which results in an improved sight and easy access. Moreover, the application of Kofferdam enables by absolute drainage a material application in nearly due form. Besides the description of the application of Kofferdam, the article comprises practice-related recommendations facilitating the application of technique.
