June, bioethics and the Supreme Court.

These decisions regarding the treatment of handicapped newborns and a woman's right to privacy in the abortion decision reflect the controversies in our society regarding decisions to treat severely defective newborns or to terminate a pregnancy. In the first decision, the court was divided 5 to 3. In the second decision, the court was divided 5 to 4. It is clear that we as a society are unclear about what a policy should be. In the end, however, constitutional rights to privacy and the rights of parents over their children should not be open to amendments by majoritarian forces.

Defining a middle ground for philosophers and production: bioethics.

From the perspective of most animal scientists and producers, animal agriculture has become increasingly contentious over the last 10 to 20 years. Furthermore, our critics seem to be extremists whose views are biased and unreasonable. But guess what? The critics say the same thing about animal producers and scientists (us). So where is the middle ground and how do we get there? Should we even worry about trying to define the middle ground? Are these contentious issues a fad that will go away? Are these "extremist" critics so far outside reason that they will be ignored by society? Ignoring "them" is not likely to work because we have seen society changing its mind (developing a new social ethic) with regard to farm animals, in part because of what these critics are saying. As a result, it is vitally important for us to know and understand what is happening and why. For example, there isn't just one voice among the critics. There is actually a spectrum of opinion among the group which conventional agriculturalists usually call their critics. The WCC-204 committee generally agrees that the key to finding the middle ground between what is perceived as a polarized set of issues between "us" (animal scientists and producers) and "them" (philosopher critics) is for both sides to learn about the reasons why each side says what they do. Only then can all parties rationally begin to identify where the middle ground lies.

The relevance of empirical research in bioethics.

Empirical research related to ethical issues in clinical research has grown dramatically in recent years. However, little attention has been devoted to the ethical relevance of the findings from this research. In order to examine the value and limitations of ethics-related empirical research, we discuss 3 case studies involving research with stored biological samples, placebo-controlled trials, and the idea of the therapeutic misconception.

Bioethical issues in family planning.

Contraception and elective abortion are two of the controversial ethical issues with which social workers must deal. Since policies regarding these issues have recently been established by the courts, the author presents a review of the relevant decisions. The policy questions stemming from a related family planning issue, namely, selective abortion because of genetic defects, are also discussed.

Bioethical issues concerning death: death, dying, and end-of-life rights.

Ethical issues about death, dying, and a person's right to make end-of-life decisions have become one of the most legally complex and culturally sensitive areas to emerge in our time. Sensitive issues associated with a terminally ill individual's right to make end-of-life decisions and the disposition of those who are unable to make such decisions for themselves will keep healthcare professionals, medical ethicists, counselors, families, lawyers, judges, and legislators busy for years to come. Americans find it difficult to deal with end-of-life issues and would rather focus on what more can be done to save a life.
