[Influence of alcohol on the behavior of dose and effect indicators in workers exposed to inorganic lead: unexpected behavior of ZPP].

A study was carried out on 65 male workers heavily exposed to lead in the ceramic tile manufacturing industry in order to assess the effects of alcohol on the biological indicators of lead (PbB, ALA-D, ALA-U, ZPP). All subjects selected for the study had PbB levels greater than or equal to 60 micrograms/dl, normal levels of serum iron and no haemoglobin disorders. The subjects were divided into three groups according to alcohol intake checked by anamnestic investigation, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) values and liver function parameters, as follows: Group A--27 subjects, controls, with daily alcohol intake less than 80 ml, MCV less than or equal to 95 mu 3, normal GGT, AST and ALT levels; Group B--20 subjects, heavy drinkers, with daily alcohol intake greater than or equal to 80 ml, MCV greater than 95 mu 3, occasionally high GGT, but normal AST and ALT values; Group C--18 subjects, heavy drinkers, with daily alcohol intake greater than or equal to 80 ml, MCV greater than 95 mu 3, abnormal GGT, AST and ALT levels. The length of lead exposure did not significantly differ in the three groups. The well-known effects of ethanol intake on PbB, ALA-D and ALA-U values were confirmed, with the following mean values in the three groups: Group A: PbB = 66.0 (micrograms/dl), ALA-D = 10.3 (mU/ml r.c.), ALA-U = 8.4 (mg/l); Group B: PbB = 68.3 (micrograms/dl), ALA-D = 6.7 (mU/ml r.c.), ALA-U = 9.1 (mg/l); Group C: PbB = 71.5 (micrograms/dl), ALA-D = 4.6 (mU/ml r.c.), ALA-U = 12.7 (mg/l).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Thermal behavior of gypsum bonded investments. (Part I) Thermal behavior in heating process(author's transl)].

The cause of the three shrinkages in the thermal expansion curves of gypsum bonded investments, which were characterized in the previous study, was examined mainly by means of TG-DTA method, X-ray diffraction method and SEM observation. The main results were as follows: 1. The first shrinkage between 100 degrees C and 200 degrees C was caused by the dehydration of gypsum. 2. The second shrinkage between 300 degrees C and 400 degrees C was due to the transformation of soluble anhydrite to insoluble anhydrite. 3. The third shrinkage beginning at the temperature range 700 degrees C approximately 800 degrees C is considered to be related to the sintering of insoluble anhydrite.

Effects of mentally retarded children's behavioral competence on nonretarded peers' behaviors and attitudes: toward establishing ecological validity in attitude research.

This study was designed to begin establishing the ecological validity of laboratory research indicating that nonretarded children's responses toward mentally retarded peers are positively affected by the retarded peers' competence in different areas. Groups of 3 children (1 retarded and 2 nonretarded fourth through sixth-graders) played a bean bag toss game in which the retarded child was either the best or an average player. Then children selected one of their two partners as a partner for a subsequent game and indicated their attitudes toward each peer and their attribution for each peer's performance. Retarded children who were the best players were selected as partners significantly more often than retarded children who were average players. Nonretarded children's attitudes toward retarded peers, however, were the same regardless of the retarded peers' performance. A relationship was also found between children's attributions of retarded peers' success to ability and their selection of the same peers as partners.

[Social contact behavior of elderly females living alone from the social psychology viewpoint--a survey. IV: Are there factors which determine social contact behavior?].

Some factors, which are important with regard to the contact behaviour of elderly women living alone, are reported and discussed: biographical sign, professional and social status as well as informations on the actual health status. Finally the essential results of the statistical intercorrelation of all involved variables are represented.
