Three new anamorphic ascomycetous yeasts are described: Candida anglica (type strain NRRL Y-27079, CBS 4262), Candida cidri (type strain NRRL Y-27078, CBS 4241), and Candida pomicola (type strain NRRL Y-27083, CBS 4242). These three species were isolated from cider produced in the United Kingdom, and their identification was determined from unique nucleotide sequences in the species-specific D1/D2 domain of large subunit (26S) ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic analysis of D1/D2 sequences placed C. anglica near Candida fragi, C. cidri near Pichia capsulata, and C. pomicola in the Pichia holstii clade.

The sex pheromone of the American population of Lyonetia prunifoliella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) was reported to be composed of three components, 10,14-dimethyloctadec-1-ene (10me14me-1-ene-18Hy), 5,9-dimethyloctadecane (5me9me-18Hy), and 5,9-dimethylheptadecane (5me9me-17Hy). Studies with a Korean population showed that the 10S, 14S isomer of the major compound was the major electrophysiologically by active stereoisomer. The 5S,9S isomers of the minar constituents also elicited electrophysiological responses. In field trappings, among the three components, the racemic mixture of 10me14me-1-ene-18Hy attracted L. prunifoliella males strongly, and the binary or tertiary combinations with racemic mixtures of the other two components did not increase trap catches. Among the four stereoisomers of 10me14me-1-ene-18Hy, only the 10S,14S isomer attracted L. prunifoliella males, as suggested by the EAG test, and attraction to the other three isomers was not observed. All stereoisomers of each minor component, as well as their racemic components, did not seem to have any additional effect on male attraction in Korea.

Three studies examined whether categorical organization of knowledge about the self explains variance in self-esteem and depression beyond that which is accounted for by sheer amount of positive or negative content. Compartmentalization is the tendency to organize positive and negative knowledge about the self into separate, uniformly valenced categories (self-aspects). As long as positive self-aspects are activated, access to negative information should be minimized. Compartmentalization was associated with high self-esteem and low depression scores for individuals whose positive self-aspects were important; when negative self-aspects were important, compartmentalization was correlated with low self-esteem and high depression scores. An analysis of self-aspect labels showed that individuals with compartmentalized organization define negative self-aspects in especially narrow terms. A possible relationship between compartmentalized organization and cognitive complexity is discussed.
