Penicillinase-producing strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated in Rotterdam.

This appears to be the first report of the isolation of a penicillinase-producing strain of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in the Netherlands. The presence of a penicillinase-producing gonococcal strain (PPGS) was demonstrated in two of a group of three patients with gonorrhoea. In addition, a penicillin- and ampicillin-sensitive gonococcus strain was isolated from all three patients. The PPGS was most probably imported into Holland from the Philippines. The epidemiological and clinical findings and the results of treatment of infection with this PPGS are discussed.

Susceptibility to antimicrobials of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated in Singapore: implications on the need for more effective treatment regimens and control strategies.

The antimicrobial susceptibility of gonococci isolated in Singapore has been studied over several years. In 1983, the prevalence of penicillinase producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PPNG) was 33.5% and 64% of non-PPNG isolates had minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of penicillin of greater than or equal to 0.5 mg/l. After a control programme, the isolation of the gonococcus from prostitutes was reduced and there was improvement in its susceptibility to antimicrobials. The incidence of PPNG strains was stabilised with a change in the treatment regimen. An influx of foreign prostitutes, however, had an unfavourable impact on these variables. Countries in South East Asia have a high prevalence of PPNG and non-PPNG strains that have reduced susceptibility to antimicrobials. In view of increased air travel the problem should be seen from a global perspective. Better treatment regimens and control strategies are urgently needed.

Efficacy of tilmicosin in treatment of pulmonary infections in calves.

The efficacy of tilmicosin in the treatment of respiratory infections in calves was evaluated. According to a randomised block design, 58 calves with naturally occurring respiratory infections were treated with one of the following products: a single subcutaneous injection of tilmicosin (10 mg/kg liveweight) or daily intramuscular injections of 5 mg lincomycin and 10 mg spectinomycin/kg liveweight, for a minimum of three days. Both treatment groups initially showed similar clinical signs and their initial responses to the treatments were good. However, the tilmicosin treated calves improved more rapidly. Significantly greater improvements (P less than or equal to 0.05) were observed in their demeanour and appetite during the first 10 days after treatment began, and in their respiratory condition between five and 10 days after treatment began.

In vitro activity of a new antibacterial drug, trospectomycin sulphate (U-63,366F), against Bacteroides strains isolated from the vagina.

The antibacterial activity of trospectomycin, clindamycin, metronidazole, imipenem, cefoxitin, and piperacillin was tested against 72 Bacteroides spp. strains isolated from the vagina of women with vaginitis by determining the minimal inhibitory concentration using the agar dilution method. Trospectomycin shows a good activity which is comparable to that of imipenem and metronidazole. Its expanded spectrum of activity makes trospectomycin suitable for the use in single-drug therapy of pelvic infections in women.
